League of Legends Preview

No Caption Provided
League of Legends is a free to play online multiplayer game being developed by Riot Games and I think a little history lesson is in order here. A long time ago when the world was a better place Warcraft 3 was released and it was good. A lot of mods were made for Warcraft 3 but one stood out like no other and that mod was defence of the ancients (DOTA for short). DOTA became hugely popular and League of Legends at its base level is DOTA remade. Your goal is to destroy the enemy team’s fortress by picking a hero, fighting monsters on the map, collecting experience and gold, buying new items and killing other players. Hopefully you will become strong enough to bring down the other teams fortress. Unfortunately at this time the NDA says I can’t post pictures or video but as soon they let me I will.

League of Legends has a few of the people that originally worked on dota and you can really see it. The map is a straight copy of the map in dota and that’s fine because it’s a great map. This a good example of how riot games developed League of Legends, they haven’t changed the core game play at all but they have added things on the side that make a much better product and of course this isn’t a mod so they don’t have to work within another game. Dota had a very VERY hardcore following and I think a lot if not all of those players will love the additions that have been implemented. For example they added a teleport back to base spell that everyone gets GENIUS! Where Riot Games have really made this their own is actually outside the game itself. You have a summoner account that exists no matter what hero you are playing. Your summoner account levels up as you play more games and has a talent tree and a book of runes. The talents you pick are the same for all your heroes and you can respec any time you’re out of a game. The book consists of 3 pages that can be customized with the runes that have bonus stats on them. The rune system is still being worked on so ill leave it for now and when they let me post video i will go into more depth. You also have levels and the more you level up the more talent points you have to spend and the more rune slots you have in your book.

The only problem I have with League of Legends at this point is the learning curve, it’s really rough! There are already a lot of people from dota who are very good and the levelling system just makes it harder to compete. People being too good is a hard thing to fix so I can only hope some sort of match making system is put into place when it goes live. I would love everyone to try this game but I’m afraid most people will just get beat repeatedly and give up. So far I really like League of Legends, a few more bug fixes and balance tweaks and it will be near perfect. Check it out when it launches on October 6th.

Champions Online 1 week after launch

I’ve been playing champions online for a whole week now and I thought I would try and do video updates as a play and share my thoughts with you guys. This is the second video in the series and hopefully you guys will enjoy it.

My first day in Champions Online, with video!

So this first video is of the final mission you undergo in the tutorial area before they kick you out on to the harsh streets of Millennium City. Hopefully there are a lot more missions like this one... Oh and I’ve bought a clip!

The next video shows of the PvP in Champions. I can only enter cage matches at the moment but hopefully there will be some new options as I level up. It uses a level bracket system similar to WoW except if you are not at the max level of your bracket it will bump you up e.g. If you’re level 7 you be bumped up to level 10. This helps to even the playing field a little bit but you still won’t have same amount of powers a level 10 would have.

Eternal Sonata I’m really trying to like you

Recently I’ve been going through some of my older games that I never finished (or never really started) and trying to complete them one by one. The first game on my list is Eternal Sonata, a Japanese RPG that came out for the Xbox 360 in October 2007. I was initially interested in Eternal Sonata because of its very striking and beautiful art style. So I checked out the demo on XBL and I liked it enough to go buy it. Fast forward to the present day and I finally decided I should play it.

    Look how beautiful it is!
  Look how beautiful it is!

The games starts with a girl falling off a cliff and while she’s falling says something along the lines of “If I blow him a kiss will he get it all the way up there... no I guess not” ...what? No seriously what the hell are you on about. I’ve played plenty of J RPG’s before so I know they can be a little cheesy at times but this is just silly. The game then flashes back to this girl at about the age of 5 where her mum tells her all about life, death and flowers. Oh god I remember when my parents gave me the same talk, it was awkward. Turns on this girl named Polka has magic powers and in this world if you have magic it means you have a fatal illness and you’re going to die soon, bummer.   Now we switch characters to Allegretto and Beat. Two orphans living in the city sewers of Ritardando. I’m going to skip ahead a little bit or we will be here all day. So from there Polka happens to run into Frédéric Chopin the famous Polish composer... as you do. Polka goes on about how she sells floral powder in Ritardando and no one will buy it because it’s so expensive. So she decides to go to speak with the king person about lowering the taxes on floral powder and Frédéric Chopin tags along because.... why not? Allegretto and Beat don’t like the fact they have to steal bread because it’s too expensive and they also decide to go to speak with the king person about lowering the taxes on bread. Frédéric and Polka meet up with Allegretto and Beat along the way and there all like “You going to see the king person? Me too! You’re also trying to lowers taxes? Get out of town! Well let’s go together.” So now they’re all going to lower taxes as one big party.

At this point I’m about 4 hours in and that’s the problem. I’m 4 hours into this game and my main objective is to speak to king dude to lower taxes.   At 4 hours in I need something more to keep me interested. The reason why I don’t think I can stand any more Eternal Sonata is because the characters just don’t seem to have a big enough problem for me to care. Sure they’re not in great situations but in a video game I need more than “We need to lowers taxes on stuff!” Remember final fantasy 10? Tidus is just sitting there minding his own business playing some blitz ball and BAM! Sin comes storming in tearing shit up, kills people all the while heavy metal music is playing in the background... Sold! Ah well I want to like Eternal Sonata but to me the people of Ritardando don’t have it that bad.

Shadow Complexed out!

Man.... give me a sec... breathe.. Ok I’m good. I just powered my way through shadow complex and man it’s a good game, like really good! I have personally never played Super Metroid or Castlevania: Symphony of the Night so this really was a new game experience for me and I really enjoyed it. In a way shadow complex played a lot like Diablo and Sacred 2. Constantly looking for that next upgrade to make your character that little bit stronger. At the start of shadow complex I was getting slightly frustrated. I kept seeing these areas I couldn’t get into because I didn’t have the right guns and every time I saw something I couldn’t blow open yet I kept thinking to myself  “oh great another thing I’m going to have to come all the way back for”. In the end you just have to let the game take you and trust it’s going to bring you back around in a smooth way and fair play to shadow complex it always did. I guess this shows my ignorance to the genre, I didn’t expect there to be so much backtracking as there was and I think it would have really started to grind on me but the combat was surprisingly solid. Firing into the 3 dimension can be a little tricky but I found myself using the melee attack most of the time mainly because it was effective and looked bad ass! It took me around 7 hours to finish (I know I’m slow!) and for 1200 MSP that’s not bad. I really can’t recommend this game enough so go download the trial see if you like it and then buy it because I really want to see a sequel!

Trying to break The Matrix one last time..

This is the last video i recorded from The Matrix Online and in this video you can see me and Dark Evolution trying to push the server to its limits. We started spawning these level 255 agents and when you kill one of them another two spawn and with the one shot admin ability a few of us had we got a lot of agents really fast. In the end the admins found out what we were doing and stopped the agents from spawning... lame!
