@lordofultima: Eh, I just played through Shenmue 1 as well & the controls aren't anywhere near as frustrating as this LP is making them look. I almost never had a problem with them. Vinny turns all the way around in a wide radius when he could just quick turn & continue on often times. Also not knowing about the tilt to easily view shop names constantly puts him in awkward positions. As well as re-positioning himself awkwardly when he could just switch between selections in 1st person view with the tap of a button.
I think some of it might be for a gag. Like when Vinny turned slowly making a truck noise but I really can't tell. When you know about all the available options the controls really are totally fine.
Vinny, you don't have to fidget around trying to get the "a" prompt to view the maps. Just stand close and use first person look with the left trigger.
Also you can view store names by tilting the camera up at the awning/signage without going into first person look. This way the subtitles will appear immediately when you're in front of a store.
It's a bit too long and the story is so goofy (cross dressing instinctual schizophrenic aristocrat chasing you around a mansion...). It's a really jarring shift in tone from RE2.
RE2 might be the best Resident Evil game and it's story -- while not super original by any means -- manages to be captivating moment to moment and has several likable characters. Code Veronica as the direct story sequel to that game just felt odd.
At a certain point I said "fuck it" and just enjoyed the glorious camp. On those terms it's amazing. But even then there's one major problem. The game switches characters without prompting. The switch locks you out of your inventory from the previous character. So you can incidentally fuck yourself out of all the power weapons you need for the final boss (as I believe Dan described). This happened to me and I had to load an old save and replay 30 minutes of end game to actually finish the thing.
It's definitely not a terrible game. I actually really enjoyed the vast majority of it. But it's certainly not in the same class as 2, REmake and 3.
Played through all the classic RE games for the first time this year and they're phenomenal and a ton of fun. Especially 2 and REmake. God damn those are some fine games.
This comment thread is pretty weird. It's kinda obvious they're playing random cool adventure games. Vinny really likes adventure games. The GBE crew is good at riffing off them... why does it need to be any more complicated than that?
