edit... Also, Dumb and Dumber is one of my all-time favourite comedies, but it kind of doesn't hold up. So much of that movie was about defying expectations, and audiences back then had so much less exposure to that kind of comedy. I cannot overstate, if you were in a movie theatre in 1994 as I was, the ending to that movie was the blindsight of the century. You could not fathom that they went there.
I suspect that someone watching it nowadays would just find it predictable, and maybe even a bit quaint.
You know, I was initially worried that after we finished asking for information about Chinese people and looking for sailors that this ER would get boring.
Folks, I have a rule: nostaliga doesn't count. If it isn't good now, it probably never was.
I cannot abide this rule. Nostalgia is one thing, but media exists within the context of when it came out, and most of it just ages poorly. Remove a game like Shenmue from the time and place when it came out, and it can be hard to understand how anyone found this game tolerable, but I can tell you, at the time, this was mind-blowing.
With regards to Tom... this is supposed to be small town Japan circa 1986, there's gonna be some amount of casual racism, particularly towards the Chinese.
That said, I don't know if I'll be able to get through this one. I usually lose interest in Shenmue around the point where Ryo is done looking for sailors.
