The Long March to 100 in 1 Year (March Progress Report)

IN MAY! My March was so long it took me an extra month to post an update.

It’s was a pretty weak month for me in working towards my goal, but these are some big games I have to talk about. I only beat two games in March, bringing me to a still reasonable 26 in towards the goal of 100. However, I still have four games to talk about.

23. Darksiders [2010]

In a bout of absent mindedness I didn’t talk about Darksiders in my February update. Despite beating and saying I beat seven games in my last update I only talked about six. It kind of echoes my overall opinion on Darksiders though, a pretty forgettable experience. The most memorable aspect was frequent Zelda-style handholding camera takeovers. As negative as my thoughts seem, I do believe Vigil had something here. There is some neat world-building. It’s just a shame only a middling cross between Devil May Cry and Zelda backs it up.

25. Horizon Zero Dawn [2017]

Horizon’s world is really fascinating and the story is built into the world in way that makes it all the more. I respect a lot about Horizon’s ability to wrap up its story with a bow, answer big questions related to its world, and not cheaply saving things for a sequel. That said I can’t express how disappointing it was for me to realize the robots that initially seemed like dinosaurs on reveal, turned out to be easier to equate them to a mammal or another creature currently in existence rather than a dinosaur. They're still cool though, and they made for more interesting combat encounters than the human enemies we’ve seen plenty of in games like Uncharted and Tomb Raider. The open world part of Horizon on the other hand, though beautiful, like really amazing looking, incredible uses of lighting and weather, is unfortunately pretty standard in its structure. Sidenote: Lance Reddick is cool as hell.

26. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt [2015]

There is plenty of great writing in all corners of Wild Hunt's world

I finally got this mammoth of a monkey off my back. The Witcher series are some of the best western RPGs out there. Wild Hunt blows a lot of contemporaries out of the water in a lot of ways. It’s a marvel of a game, but there is almost too much there. I kept getting sidetracked from the main storyline to do a lot of trivial things like chasing gwent cards and side quests that ended up being little more than a bit of fetch, but I did enjoy finding the same Mass Effect type encounters from my saves of the previous games. When it was all said and done I clocked in 170 or so hours into the game and still have two-thirds of Blood and Wine waiting on me. The main story though does wrap up Geralt’s story in compelling fashion and I definitely approve of the idea of a new Witcher game with a new character. I’m definitely going to be keeping my eye on Cyberpunk 2077, as these days CD Projekt RED seems more and more like the last bastion of the Modern Western RPG.

Dark Souls III: Ashes of Ariandel [2016] and Dark Souls III: The Ringed City [2017]

The final DLC of the Dark Souls saga has been released and I have been spending my time all up in it. I also never quite finished the prior DLC and took this opportunity to finish both and both are excellent. Sister Friede is among the best bosses of the series and all the rest rate pretty highly as well. As more of a PvE player I won’t touch too much on the online elements, but one of the new bosses is a cool nod to the Old Monk from Demon’s Souls, in that you straight up can be someone else’s boss battle. As much as I enjoyed these DLCs and Dark Souls III as a whole, it does seem they’re circling back to old ideas, even if they’re iterating on them effectively. However, if you enjoy Dark Souls, aside from being burned out, I see no reason why you wouldn’t enjoy III’s DLCs, as they contain some elite Souls content.

That was my weak output for March, bringing me to 26 games. I'm pleased to report that my April was much more productive as far as numbers towards 100. Stay tuned and thanks for reading.
