This sounds like selling out of the highest regard. Facebook flashed them money and, in the wake of competition, they ran out of the business. Nobody here seriously thinks Facebook is going to pursue high quality VR games, do you?

you're right. Facebook didnt buy them to make money, just to screw you over. a $2 billion practical joke on you.

No, Facebook bought them to make money. High Quality VR games is NOT where the money is at. That requires a heavy duty spec PC. Where the money is at and has been for a while is social and monetizing super easy games that everyone, including grandma can play. Like.. I don't know, Farmville, Candy Crush, and PvZ2. And selling your information to the highest bidder with information about what you like and don't like so they can better sell you stuff. Oh and selling your data to the Government too, can't forget the NSA!

What also still scares me is stuff like facebook integration into oculus, to the point where you NEED a facebook account to either use the oculus, download software for it or something. I mean, you can't expect facebook to just leave the oculus alone forever. Look at some cell phones that come with facebook baked in and can't be removed. (Like my HTC One). I don't have a facebook account and I don't want a facebook account. I don't need or want the entire world to know what I do and don't like. If I want to talk to someone, I will text, call or e-mail them. Plain and simple, if facebook is a major part of the oculus I won't be using it. I'd rather go with Sony or maybe Valve if they get back in the VR market.

And like someone said on the very first page, I DON'T WANT my VR experience to be social. That's half the reason I want to use VR in the first place, is to get away from social shit. I want to escape reality, not have a pop up of what someone else is doing or pop up ad's because facebook is trying to monetize the shit out of the oculus.

The thing that scares me the most about this is the deflating enthusiasm for the oculus by developers, like Notch. You can give oculus as much money as you want, but if the devs aren't there to make anything for it then it's still a utter failure, even if the tech is there.

Just got my poster in and wow, it does look like someone used the tube as a baseball bat! The poster itself looks like it went through some sort of grinding machine! I'm certainly not upset at the Giant Bomb folks, I'm more upset at UPS. I really wanted to frame this but it just looks horrendous. I hope I'm in the minority here and most of these posters look really good. Also just FYI, I don't want a refund or new poster as I know how hard and probably expensive all this is. Now I see why Rorie was saying this was all a nightmare.

Really fantastic article! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. I'm still kind of glad I don't play EVE because it sounds insane, but it's fun to read about!

It's worth noting that as mentioned above, the question Jeff was answering was referring to horribly negative and pessimistic NeoGAF posts. The thread that was recently posted here about new hire speculation was generally pretty positive, and even Rorie dropped a message into it.

My apologies for not putting the question in my original post here for context. I just kind of took his answer at face value and thought it was a really cool look behind the scenes. Not to mention I don't really pay attention to places like NeoGAF, Reddit, 4chan, etc as they scare me. lol

Wait for it: the bombcrew does the ads, just like on the podcast. That, I would be down for.

That would be awesome! My vote is on them doing the ads! I always get a good laugh out of the podcast ads.

Yeah, this was great news. Really hope they find some good people to bring on.

Same here, I'm looking forward to see who they bring in. I still kind of wish Danny O'Dwyer could come over to the Giant Bomb side of things. But he's a Gamespot dude mostly it seems.

Most of you know this or maybe it's already been posted before, but I wanted to at least put it up since this is the first I've heard about this. I've been wondering about the GB crew getting some new people in for a while now and Jeff commented on the budget, how GB is doing and possible new hires/new features from his blog. (http://blog.jeffgerstmann.net/). So I thought I would repost here for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.

"Wait, a message board thread is speculating about things they don’t actually know anything about? Weird.

Here’s the short version: If I didn’t still think that there was a way for us to create the content we want to create and grow into something bigger and cooler, I would have left last year.

I’m tempted to leave it at that since forum junk like that typically doesn’t warrant an answer, but the site’s actually doing really well. Just kinda slogging through the process of getting budget shit locked down and putting a proper “let’s actually get some more people in here because this is completely ridiculous” plan together. It’s taken forever to get to this point but it seems like everyone is finally in basic agreement about pushing a reasonably-sized pile of money my way and letting me spend it on humans.

We should get that new video player pushed out next week, and that comes with a larger code merge that’ll make it easier for engineers to actually add new features to the site. We’re talking about finding better ways to showcase premium videos as one of the early things we’d like to change, and the wiki needs some additional attention (but that’s a larger, more difficult project). We’ll start messing around with mid-roll video ads in the near future, but it looks like we’re going to eventually remove ads for monthly members, too. It’s sort of a careful balancing act between bringing money in so we can continue to afford additional hires without making the site look like garbage or putting 100% of our stuff behind a paywall. The podcast ads seem to be doing especially well. I’d like to bring back a free, regular live show at some point.

We’re also talking about road trips and tours and bringing back the Big Live Live Show and a bunch of other wild shit, but that’s all further off, just kinda kicking ideas around at the moment."

UPDATE FOR CONTEXT: Here is the original question that prompted this answer, my apologies for not putting it in originally.

"Anonymous asked:

There's a thread on GAF and they are speculating that Giant Bomb is in danger of disappearing/that the website hasn't been doing well lately. I know it's GAF and they are usually full of shit but I'm still a little worried and I don't really follow the business side of the website. Is there any veracity to their claims or is this just GAF being GAF?"
