Got My gaming PC

So I have my first gaming PC for about 2 or 3 weeks now and its been great, because my xbox has been packed away due to me moving. It has also shed some light on the gaming PC world for me. Before I got my PC i was a PC GAMING IS DYING HAHA guy. Now i know how wrong I really was, It seems to me that PC gaming is doing better than ever! At heart I am still a hardcore console player and that won't be changing any time soon. (I still prefer FPS on console). The reasons why PC gaming is so great is well for me anyway is Steam. It's another reason why Valve is one of the most important gaming company to date. It's important to me and pc gaming as a whole because you can easily access games and they have amazing sales. (In the first week of getting my PC, i brought 8 games off steam). But at this moment I don't think I could spend more than $15USD on Steam for a game, unless it was really really good. I have also taken an oath since I got my PC which is "Thou Shall Not Have Any Pirated Games On Thou PC." And I plan to stick to it.

Steam has sales all the time and there are times where evey game is on sale. Always be on the lookout for steam sales and buy everything on sale. I mean I bought oblivion a few weeks ago with all DLC content that ever existed for only $8.

My advice: Wait for the the holidays. You may have missed Steam's amazing summer sale, but in a couple months they should begin their annual holiday sale where games become dirt cheap and so do you.

Once you get used to the precision of a mouse and keyboard you will go back to the controller to play something and feel like your a retarded monkey trying to shoot. Assuming of course that you give yourself enough time to acclimate to using a KB+M exclusively for a long enough period of time. The muscle memory will always be there to use a controller since it is what you learned to play with, but once you get acclimated to the better version you will find it tough to go back. Most people do anyway.

EDIT:Also, forgot to add welcome to the brotherhood. Maybe it's just me, but I have noticed a lot of our lost brethren returning to the flock lately. Oh well, as long as they see the error of there ways and return home we can find it in our motherboards to forgive them for there trepidations and betrayal. =)

This, it's a little awkward at first, but eventually you'll realize how much more accurate you are.

Steam has a lot of demos (Torchlight for example). The PC forum has several free PC game threads as well.

Wow, this is so important to you, isn't it? Yeah, I like agonizing for six weeks over what parts I'm going to buy before I finally buy them, put them all together, and find out something else doesn't work, which means an RMA and another week before I can finally install Windows.  You mongoloid bitch. "

The only hard thing about building your own computer is getting the heatsink attached, and occasionally getting all the front LED cables in the right place if both the motherboard manual and the attached cables in the case are extremely vaguely marked, but that is rare. Compatibility issues are _very_ rare nowadays, especially if you just build a gaming rig, not a home recording studio or something.

You might be right about the agonizing for weeks over which parts you should get though, but I generally go with the least expensive that does what I need it to do, my latest machine cost less than $250 in parts ... but of course I had to pay another $150 for a Windows 7 OEM license.

The actual building of a computer is easy, but defective parts are becoming more and more common.  I personally know of multiple people who had to deal with multiple component failure RMAs in the last year.  One of my real life friends had to deal with multiple months of testing, RMAs, and phone line grief before finally finishing his functional gaming PC.

People shouldn't buy from Best Buy, but building your own PC is a calculated risk.  If you can't afford to potentially throw months of time or hundreds of dollars into the toilet, it might be worth it to invest a hundred in a manufacturer / builder who will guarantee you a working product.

Wow, I haven't had to experience any of that. The only machine I've breaking down in the last couple of years was ironically the only machine besides my laptop I have at home I haven't built myself.

That said, the latest computer I built I had a weird issue with for an hour or two, until I understood that I had accidentally answered yes when the BIOS had asked me if I wanted it to automatically overclock my 3 core CPU and unlock it's 4th core ... which resulted in that I was unable do to anything at all in my windows 7 install since it was totally unable to recognize any drivers whatsoever, install any programs or do anything but tell me that there were windows updates available, but that wasn't allowed to install them.

I feel I should elaborate on one point because of the point you made.  People should go with GOOD builders.  Not your Dells or HPs or any other mainstream manufacturer.  Not only do those big companies overcharge, but companies like Dell will use lower quality components (cheap capacitors in one of their desktop lines caused a stunning 90% failure rate).  I bought my last PC from AVADirect (they were good a year ago, but I couldn't tell you if they still are), and paid a minimum premium to have them build it and deal with any potential RMA issues up front.

I can personally recommend Puget Custom Computers, only had good experiences with them (one order didn't post when it arrived and they took care of it fast and free).  I am one of those people who whenever they try to touch electronics something bad will happen, plus minor carpal tunnel makes it hard to build.

There something deeply ironic about someone trolling on a gaming web site calling another user a "stupid fat gamer" and a "shut-in".

Just saying.  Now back in your box.
