I am 100% with you I used to be a total Nintendo cock muncher. I got the Snes the day it came out in Australia. I was one of those fanboy teenagers shitting on the PS1 and holding off on 32/64 bit systems as the ultra 64 was delayed and delayed again....I went so long without upgrading that I lost interest in games, and when I came back the N64 blew...2 really good games in Zelda and Mario and three OK games (PD, Golden Eye, Banjo) 5 games decent games in 4 years is ridiculous. When the gamecube came out, again I bought it day one (but by this point I was buying every system day one). Hoping that Nintendo would find their way, they were using optical storage they said they had 100's of third parties lined up..... They didn't , I bought about 10 games for the damn thing total at a period in my life when i was buying at least 6 games a month. Now you would have thought I would have learnt a lesson before the Wii, and I had I knew I was wasting my money even as I pre-ordered it, but the novelty play-style meant that I had to try it, I've bought 5 games for the damn thing.

I feel like im in an abusive relationship a little bit, I keep buying nintendo consoles hoping that things will change, They never do...this time they they will say their graphics are better than the others and they will get all the third party support in the world. This time around i'm not going for it, Its the only way they will learn....all real gamers should say no ninty 's new system until they get their shit together.

I had this happen to me during the PS1/n64 era, I was busy with school and the friends I had weren't into games and money was tight.

I  only bought both systems second hand in 99. I played the occasional PC game during that time but it wasn't very common.

Then one day I just started playing again.

"Am I a pleasure junkie? Am I someone who prefers checklists to feelings? "

Frustration is a feeling... and its one that i try to limit when I play games. I think most peoples issues with the checkpointing and sloppy mechanics are important because that directly impacts your interactivity with the world. If I want x to happen and I know ive done x correctly and it happens slowly or incorrectly i get frustrated...this happens all the time in GTA 4 while driving and occasionally in combat.

If I then fail a mission due to that problem and the game punishes me by making me do a bunch of shit ive already done I get frustrated, and that frustration reduces my level of enjoyment of a game. Yes the city is big and really fleshed out and the story is pretty good, but the most important thing in games is how you interact with things and GTA was clunky in that regard.

I  played and loved GTA IV and  the world was fantastic, but, and it is a big huge but, alot of the pieces of that game were not good.

The driving was poor, the music on the radio stations was the worst out of all of the modern GTA games, the dialogue when you were out on "dates"  repeated too much (i really liked the "social" stuff in the game but the repetition was killer), actually ALOT of the media repeated too often and finally to top it all off the controls during combat were pretty horrible....The new stuff added in the expansions went someway to fixing this but it didn't go far enough.

I did spend hours in that world doing nothing much at all and enjoying myself but after hearing  same joke 5 times it gets really stale, and the gameplay was not good enough on its own to keep me coming back...so I finished it then finished the expansions and I have not had the inclination to play it since.

MGS 4 was one of the worst games i've played this generation

Saints row 2 was one of the best games I've ever played and is underated

Mass effect 2 was a poor  third person action game with great interactive cut scenes and thats it

Fallout New Vegas was the third best game  released in 2010 (with red dead and rockband 3 in the 1 and 2 position)

I enjoyed Planetside, when it was at its peak, more than any game I've ever played and I believe someone will make a great MMOFPS again.

All the Battlefield games released after the first one have blown.

and last but not least fuck theGears of War franchise, those games are no fun to play at all.
