Cuphead is real good, but what holds it back a bit for me is that doesn't have much artistic ambition other than to emulate.

Also the BotW main theme is maybe my favorite Zelda track ever? I know that soundtrack doesn't have many bangers, but I'm surprised that track and Hyrule Castle didn't get a mention.

"Best Surprise" is the most ridiculous to listen to because it's always:

"This is really good, but I was only kinda surprised by it!"

"I totally disagree! It was kinda good, and I was really surprised by it!"

I'm cheering for Nier, but I'd accept Persona 5 for best music.

The original Nier is simultaneously a game I love a whole lot and one that I would have a real hard time recommending.

Every scene with Emil and Kainé is perfect, though.

God that underhand knife toss was such a perfect moment.

If it wasn't for the water section dragging on somewhat, I think Inside would knock Portal off the top of my list of "most perfect" games.

It's just such a singular, well crafted, experience.

Hitman is super deserving of GOTY. Of their Top 10, Inside and maaaybe Thumper are the only games I'd put above it, and neither of those had any real chance of winning.

I feel the gang is super overselling Doom's "This is dumb, but get this: we know it's dumb" shtick.

It's certainly better than most media that tries to pull off irony as a central tonal element (It's never obnoxiously smug) but I don't think it really rises above pretty good self-aware goofiness.

(Still love the game of the year stuff though, as always.)

Glad Inside won for best looking game. The lighting and animations and staging for each scene are all jaw-droppingly good.

And as much as I enjoyed Doom, I didn't really get much out of it. It's weird to hear it described with such transcendent language.
