Nuclear_Anomaly: Best of 2010

List items

  • Obvious choice really. Bioware seem to struggle at making games which aren't amazing. Everything about this game is fantastic.

  • The Total War series remains unparalleled as the best strategy game series. The more focused, character driven Napoleon was no exception. An exceptional strategy game which you can sink many many hours into without realising.

  • Fallout was, after Mass Effect, the best RPG released this year. Great story, lots of depth, a great sense of humour. Only the, still buggy, engine lets down a game which could have been on par with Mass Effect.

  • The Civilization series makes a welcome return. While I miss the more in-depth statistics and analysis features of 4; the improved combat, visuals and gameplay more than make up for it. A 'only-one-more-turn' game at it's finest. Civ 5 is easily one of the best games this year, second only to Napoleon as a strategy title.

  • Upon release, a bit short on content, and still rough around the edges; STO has been improved exponentially over the course of the year. A competent MMO with the best space combat apart from, arguably, EVE. I look forward to the improvements 2011 will bring to this underrated title.

  • Horror gaming at it's finest. A true survival-horror, where running away is the only option when faced with the horrors this game throws at you. An intriguing plot, surprisingly competent voice acting, a host of weird visuals and tension you could cut with a knife. Amnesia is a surprising, but well deserved entry into my top 10.

  • I was a huge fan of the original Bioshock and Bioshock 2 is a decent, though not perfect, addition to that universe. The game had the potential to be a disaster; made by a different studio, exploring the same places we've already been. However, I feel the vastly improved combat, and still compelling plot save this game from mediocrity.

  • Dawn of War 2 was an amazing game. Chaos Rising adds a host of new levels and content, mostly fighting against the vicious Chaos faction. A good addition, though, I feel not adding enough and leaving me with a sense of disappointment. The gameplay, however, is still fantastic. Focused, manageable and intense, the combat is as strategic as ever and the new Chaos faction are a welcome addition and challenging opponent.

  • A welcome return for one of my favourite turn based strategy game series. Disciples 3 picks up where Disciples 2 left off. A unique art style, old but still enjoyable gameplay and an interesting universe leaves Disciples lagging behind some of the better strategy titles, but still a good game.

  • An underrated title from German developer Daedalic Entertainment. I have always enjoyed point-and-click adventure games, and while a little buggy at times, The Whispered World is a fantastic example of this genre. The story is engaging, interesting, and also profoundly melancholy (particularly by the ending of the game); it left me feeling quite sad, but also satisfied; which for a game is an amazing achievement. Difficult puzzles, an amazing soundtrack, some surprisingly good voice work and, of course, Spot make this a worthy addition to my top 10.
