Games I played in 2018

List items

  • Started out strong but petered out for me.

  • Pure, unadulterated Souls-y goodness. Also, ninja cats with eyepatches. Yes please!

  • So far, so good. More polish will hopefully be added along the way. Art's butt-ugly, though.

  • Early frontrunner for game of the year. I get it now. I really get it. Also, Eff Rathian and Rathalos. Eff their poisonous butts all the way to monster hell.

  • An instant classic, I reckon.

  • Between this incredible gem and Breath of the Wild, I daresay the Switch may have the strongest launch year in gaming history.

  • Pure platforming delicacy.

  • Xcom + Mario + Rabbids. This shouldn't work at all, and yet it does. Oh so well, too.

  • Again. This time on Switch. Because it might just be my favourite game ever.

  • What a game! The world, the story, the tight combat. Good luck topping this one, 2018.

  • A disappointing co-op game that doesn't really come together.

  • A very good, faithful remix of the old Mega Drive games. And one that, unfortunately, can't pave over the cracks in the old gameplay mechanics. Still, great tunes.

  • Deep, fun battle mechanics but the levels, enemies and barebones structure meant I soon lost interest.

  • It's more Splatoon, which can only be a good thing.

  • It's Castlevania III-2!

  • Played a bit of this game last year on PC and liked it a lot. Played it again this year on Switch...and wow! This one might end up as one of my all time favourites! Only game I've played that comes close to capturing Dark Souls' decaying beauty and grace.

  • Another game I played on PC last year but bought the full release on Switch this year.

  • Good, but not my cup of tea.

  • Hipster Katamari? Colour me intrigued. Sadly the gameplay isn't nearly as compelling as the presentation so I found myself losing interest fast.

  • A class act from Insomniac, capturing everything you love about the friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man. One of the year's best.

  • And the award for best new character goes to - Kassandra! What a loveable badass she is, and wreaking havoc across the Aegean Sea was never dull. The most Ubi of all Ubi games, filled to the brim with systems and things to do, though after a whole month of playing almost daily I still wasn't close to the end and it all petered out for me.

  • What with all the newfangled metroidvanias of late, and having missed out on Symphony of the Night, I had a powerful hankering to play this pillar of the whole genre. What a masterpiece!

Also, there's Rondo of Blood, I guess. I'll get to that one day. Good intro music!
