Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is a 3D turn-based tactical RPG developed by Ubisoft Paris (game engineering), Ubisoft Milan (game design) and was published by Ubisoft for the Nintendo Switch on August 29, 2017. The game was developed using the the Snowdrop Engine and features music composed by composer Grant Kirkhope.
The game is a crossover spin-off between Nintendo's Mario series and Ubisoft's Rabbids series. Kingdom Battle allows players to control a 3 character squad selected from eight possible heroes (Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, and four Rabbids dressed as the former) as they restore the Mushroom Kingdom to its original state after an invasion of Rabbids wrecks havoc and chaos across the kingdom. The gameplay of Kingdom Battle is reminiscent of the rebooted XCOM-series and combines exploration and simple puzzle-solving with a similar cover-based combat to the aforementioned XCOM reboot.
There are a total of 4 different worlds within the game each consisting of 9 different levels and 2 boss battles per world (1 mid-boss and 1 end boss). Each world also contains a set of secret worlds which are accessible only through revisiting the world upon its completion.
World 1: Ancient Gardens
World 2: Sherbet Desert
World 3: Spooky Trails
World 4: Lava Pits
The game is compatible with a selection of amiibo figures (Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Yoshi). The ability to scan amiibo in-game is unlocked after World 1-5 is completed. Scanning an amiibo unlocks a weapon for the respective character and their Rabbid counterpart.
The "Pixel Pack" was the preorder bonus for the game and includes 8 unique weapons with a pixelated aesthetic for use from the outset of the game. The "Pixel Pack" was also mad available for purchase from the Nintendo eShop upon the game's release.
The season pass is scheduled to include 3 different pieces of content which include the following:
- Pack 1 (available at launch): A set of 8 steampunk themed weapons.
- Pack 2 (scheduled for between 22 September and 21 December 2017): An additional set of solo and co-op challenge levels.
- Pack 3 (scheduled for 2018): A story expansion
