Dead Space just finished mini review

I bought dead space like a week ago and I beat it today. For the most part it was great I liked it alot living up to the resident evil in space tag line
one thing I didn't like is that the story is awful. Issac the person you play as never talks and he is wearing this deep space mining suit that makes him
look like a robot, it disconnects your from him not only that he also acts like robot too doing absolutely anything for anyone that pops up on his little screen.
the game wants you to care about him but nothing in the game makes you wanna care about him.

I really loved Dead Space. It's one of my favorite games from 2008. I thought the story in the game was fine, I think it did it's part just fine. I think it served its purpose in keeping the game moving along and setting up a few awesome moments. Sure, I can't say I cared all that much about Isaac, but I wanted to survive in the game and the overall game was great enough to keep me playing. I did think it was interesting how the game gives you a full reveal of Isaac's face right at the start of the game, even though he's masked throughout the rest. That's the opposite of how most games would handle that. I'm not sure I would agree that the game wants you to care about him, but perhaps that they instead want you to care about his mission, if that makes any sense.

Interesting, because in many games the hero is silent but it still works. Perhaps it's because in Deadspace you spend the whole game looking at Isaac's back because of the first-person perspective, so his lack of real character is more glaring. In Half-Life, Gordon Freeman works exactly because he is silent - you feel like you're him.

If it wasn't for GtaIV, Dead Space would have been my game of the year. With that said i adored every aspect of the game. The story was great, it was tense. The atmosphere was perfect. I could keep on going about how great the game is, there isn't really any thing wrong with the game.

Dead Space is an amazing game and I loved every minute of it. I didn't mind that Isaac was mute because his animations and sounds already made him feel lifelike to me. The story was also portrayed more through the logs and live video feeds so it didn't really matter. I approached it like Bioshock, a very similar game in many respects. Plus, his "muteness" is explained in DS: Downfall I believe. I am sure they just adjusted accordingly to the game story itself, however.

The combat and overall action was what really set this game apart for me. I thought the controls were tight and the guns had a great weight to them. It was very satisfying to use an upgraded Plasma Cutter against a Brute and take him down solely with it. I want to play it again, only with the Plasma Cutter, and get that achievement and experience it again.  As Vinny said, I don't think there was any other game last year that was this close to "perfect." I still liked a few games better (GTA IV was my GOTY, and MGS4, Burnout Paradise and Professor Layton beat it), but solely as an experience, it was sublime. I recommend this game to everyone.

I say "heresy!"

BioShock is one of my favorite games ever, but I guess people didn't like the combat, right? That is the main complaint I have heard. I didn't even notice it when I played it. Everything just flowed for me. It was a very natural, organic experience.

no the combat was fine I think the problem was that I was playing cod4 for the first time at the same time I was playing bioshock
so the whole time I was playing it I was like "you know what this needs cod4" also I thought the powers could had been done better
what everyone found charming and cool about the game I didn't and I don't know why. it just didn't get its hooks in me

Well, that feeling is gonna come naturally I guess by playing a lot of COD. They are different games and they should be experienced as such. Thankfully, I played the game before COD4 came out, so I played it without that mindset. However, I did play it again over the summer and loved it even more. Perhaps I would suggest you to do the same. The powers, or "plasmids," I felt were very well implemented, though the game never forces you to use either guns or plasmids, or both. It is up to the player to decide.

As for the hook of the game, the general consensus was that the world was so alive and organic that everything felt unique. Enemies would constantly rummage around doing their own thing, and you could ignore them if you want, and listen to the inane comments they spew here and there to the other messed up denizens.  The audio logs were another great touch, because I always felt that the game didn't want to spoonfeed you the information: it wanted you to decipher it yourself. Listening to Dr. Suchong's audio file and then seeing his dead corpse was an amazing moment.

Overall, it was a superb game. I would suggest for you to try it again sometime. You may see it differently.

yeah the audio logs in both dead space and bioshock are great
my favorite was in dead space where the guy is talking about "if I don't have any limbs I won't kill anyone"
and I was like "oh my god I'm listening to a guy hack off his own limbs, that is both messed up and awesome"

Yeah, that was great. I remember that one. There was also the other one when the guy commits suicide and it doesn't work the first time, so you just hear him screaming and then he keeps shooting himself. Disturbing as heck, but it reminded me of a South Park episode, and then I laughed.

so what did you think about the end of dead space ending
I knew something was going to jump him from the second you saw in front of him instead of behind him

Yeah, I could have seen that one coming. Still, it was a fine, not spectacular, ending to an excellent game. It was a bit predictable, but the ending was fine. At least it wasn't as disappointing as Bioshock's ending, something even I can admit.

I really enjoyed playing Deadspace, i loved the no hud approach they took with it and the weapons being tools. I liked the audio logs and find it better than (for example) FEAR 2 intel journals. Great atmosphere also.
