Today's Music Sucks

Mainstream music nowadays is so boring and dull. They lack soul, meaning and good beats. Now it's all about money, fame, sex and gangsta wannabes. Today's music is dominated by all these clubbing and R&B artists, and they suck. I hate them. I basically stopped listening to the radio a few years ago because all I hear are just utter nonsense. Same goes with music videos. All I see on MTV are artists dressing like prostitutes, club scenes, sex scenes and again gangsta wannabes. It's just so revolting to look at. I mean, I'm fine with having sexy scenes on music videos because who won't want to see them...but there's a limit to it. And they say video games are bad for the kids.

What happened to all the alternative and rock bands? I don't see them or hear them anymore. They've suddenly gone underground as they are dominated by these foolish genre. At least that's how I see it. Last time there was Rage Against The Machine, Limp Bizkit, Korn, Three Doors Down, Evanescence, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Staind, Green Day, Sum 41, etc. Even though most of them haven't been active in terms of making new albums, what about the new rock artists? I'm sure they've been wanting to release some new rock tunes of their own but they can't because today's music is dominating the ring, making the rock genre fall on deaf ears. Does that make me only a heavy metal and rock enthusiast? No, not true at all. I'm a universal listener because I grew up listening to all kinds of music ranging from pop, dance, hip-hop, techno, classical, oldies, even R&B's. Toni Braxton, Boyz II Men, 2Pac, Coolio, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston. They were all great when suddenly the genre slowly turned sour and the music became souless and meaningless.

So what do I do know? I go back to basic. Over the past few years I've been listening to old music ranging from the 60's until the late 90's such as Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Duran Duran, Pink Floyd, Abba, Run-DMC, Beastie Boys, Ace of Base, AC/DC, The Beatles, Three Dog Night, The Police, etc. I never thought I'd be doing it but it felt really good. I find 80s and 90s boy bands to be more relaxing and fun to listen to than today's garbage. Oh, and let's not forget video game soundtracks. Akira Yamaoka, Masafumi Takada, Frank Klepacki, Koji Kondo, Nobuo Uematsu; they're simply the best.

Today's music isn't shit, it's the "Pop" and this Beiber Fever and woMAN GaGa that is shit, Green Day is still good, Pendulum are good. What the title should have said was "Today's good music is too hard to find."

I generally don't care for modern music. I personally think the 80's and early 90's were the best eras of music.

I have a hard time finding good music too, and yes I do look.  Most of that "indie" stuff is the most simplistic trash, and people gravitate to it because it's different than what is the mainstream now.

I'll never say something like "todays music is shit" because you can be sure there're musicians out there that aren't in it for the money and fame and are actually making music they like and not what is in demand. But I really do dislike a lot of the mainstream music that is realesed these days. I can apreciate all types of music (well. . . most types) but some of the stuff I hear is not my idea of music. Then you get those rappers that haven't released anything in a while suddenly releasing a song featuring Justin fucking Beiber, which really only consists of him dancing around like a moron on the video clip. Clearly they're just trying to cash in on his current sucsess.

Exactly, shit sinks while the gems always float to the top. I barely ever hear rubbish music these days, mostly because I never listen to music on TV and I'm lucky enough to have a super awesome local radio station.

Man it's so hard to figure out what indie actually means, I'd say Animal Collective have become semi-mainstream by now. I don't say that in a negative sense though, I still like most of their stuff.

But yeah, I can agree. On the other hand, I enjoy listening to genres that not everyone listens to (Alternative Rock, etc). Not because it makes me feel unique or anything silly like that though.

You're listening to the wrong music. Good music hasn't gone anywhere. Just change the radio station, go online, etc. You'll probably find a whole lot of stuff that you like.

Heartless Bastards and Drive-By Truckers are still putting out good music.  Plus there are so many alternatives to popular music that if you can't find something you like then you just suck at the internet or just hate music all together. Dude we live in an age where clowns rap about how the fuck magnets work so how can you honestly say today's music sucks ?

I'm a young guy, in fact I'm only just an adult and I believe that mainstream music today sucks. The pop isn't all that good but I find the R & B and rap unbearable. I'm glad I have all my rock to listen to but I imagine a lot of people would consider the music I listen to terrible, it works both ways.

I dunno, trying to look cool, I guess?

Either way, the music 10-20 years ago really wasn't much better, kid. And like I said: our parents were going '''gah them kids these days have such terrible music taste'' 20 years ago as well.

Pop music is trash. Im not just talking Lady Gaga, im talking about R'n'B, dance, rap, I could go on. It all equally generic and shit.
Modern day rock, Drum n Bass, Electronic, dubstep and indie is still amazingly awesome though.

The number of records sold has nothing to do with the quality of the music. And anyway the vast majority of those records were sold to millions of 13 year old girls.

I don't think today's music sucks, if anything there is more music around, just need to look harder.
Only thing I have against 'today's music' is how it seems RnB and popstars like your Gaga's and Biebers are on a completely different level to the indie music, they will make 10 times as much money no sweat. I don't expect this to change ever to be honest, I guess it's just the way the music business works currently.

I've been currently enjoying modern folk/rock bands like Mumford and Sons (fairly successful over here so good on them) and a local band Stornoway (who I highly recommend).

Yeah tell it to this sales chart of all the best records sold, which disproves your theory. If you can't appeal to people, you probally don't have enough talent imo. I don't think it's only 13 year old girls who buys it, it's everyone. Read this.

That only describes the majority of today's rap. The music I call "mainstream" doesn't talk about that stuff, has plenty of soul and meaning, as well as a good beat. And it is pretty good. If you don't like it, don't listen to it and stop whining. There are people that like mainstream music and hate rock, and that is just fine.

Seems like something a middle school student would post. When I was in middle school, anyone who wasn't listening to rap was listening to Led Zeppelin and Beatles, and they thought they were so cool. One of the reasons why Queens Of The Stone Age is my favorite band is because they aren't mainstream. This is probably because the band has a unique sound that only certain people will come to appreciate

I can't necessarily agree.  There's tons of great music out there today.  It may not all be in the mainstream, but it is still there.

The real problem is that music, both as a business and as artists, has become something where fame is easily handed out.  The pretentiousness continues to grow, and with that, it's very difficult to differentiate the music and the people creating it from one another.

Also, did you seriously just mention "Limp Bizkit"?  While that group had some talented musicians (as can be seen from their other projects), the band itself is fucking stupid.  It was fucking stupid when I was in high school and they first came out, and they only made one decent album with Three Dollar Bill Y'all.

I don't know.  The idea of all this is incredibly subjective, but there's plenty of good music.  If you can't find it, then maybe you need to look at how much you are trying to hold on to the "days of old" and open up your mind a little more.

I hate modern music. Absolutely hate it. The last band that I really liked was Soundgarden, and they broke up around 97 (Though they have recently reunited, but I don't think they're making new music).

Most of the stuff I listen to is from the 60s and 80s, stuff like Black Sabbath and Metallica. It's sad really, how dead metal really is. Well, maybe not dead...Misguided is a better word. DragonForce is okay, but even their super-shredding can't make up for a lot of the weird things in their songs (I'm pretty sure I heard auto-tuning in one song, and I HATE auto-tuning more than just about anything else).

I should point out that I only listen to hard rock and metal. Nothing else appeals to me. NOTHING.

You are are drunk, this music is so poetic!

Wake up in the morning feeling like P Diddy
(Hey, what up girl?)
Got my glasses on, I'm out the door
I'm gonna hit this city (Lets go)
Before I leave, brush my teeth with a bottle of Jack
Cause when I leave for the night, I ain't coming back
I'm talking - pedicure on our toes, toes
Trying on all our clothes, clothes
Boys blowing up our phones, phones
Drop-topping, playing our favorite cds
Pulling up to the parties
Trying to get a little bit tipsy

Don't stop, make it pop
DJ, blow my speakers up
Tonight, Imma fight
Till we see the sunlight
Tick tock, on the clock
But the party don't stop no
Woah-oh oh oh
Woah-oh oh oh.

Dude, this is poetry!  The hight of human evolution!

This is the worst decade of music ever bar none today's music is all toned down  pussy shit with nothing creative or edgy about it it's a shame really actually Rock isnt doing fine at all real Rock feels dead sadly the only good stuff is from 60's,70's,80's,90's but something bad happen in the late 90's the boy bands,Brittany Spears,Kid Rock,Limp Bizikit ect..That was the start of the downfall of music it has gotten  worst and worst ever since not that MTV is even good but MTV now stands for MEtv reailty bs garabage. At a time MTV wasnt that bad and was actually fun to watch shows like Alternative nation and headbangers ball. Now that network is freaking joke i hope they go out of the business anyways i have a hard time believing  music indrustry  will ever  go back to being good its sad really.
