Today's Music Sucks

Mainstream music nowadays is so boring and dull. They lack soul, meaning and good beats. Now it's all about money, fame, sex and gangsta wannabes. Today's music is dominated by all these clubbing and R&B artists, and they suck. I hate them. I basically stopped listening to the radio a few years ago because all I hear are just utter nonsense. Same goes with music videos. All I see on MTV are artists dressing like prostitutes, club scenes, sex scenes and again gangsta wannabes. It's just so revolting to look at. I mean, I'm fine with having sexy scenes on music videos because who won't want to see them...but there's a limit to it. And they say video games are bad for the kids.

What happened to all the alternative and rock bands? I don't see them or hear them anymore. They've suddenly gone underground as they are dominated by these foolish genre. At least that's how I see it. Last time there was Rage Against The Machine, Limp Bizkit, Korn, Three Doors Down, Evanescence, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Staind, Green Day, Sum 41, etc. Even though most of them haven't been active in terms of making new albums, what about the new rock artists? I'm sure they've been wanting to release some new rock tunes of their own but they can't because today's music is dominating the ring, making the rock genre fall on deaf ears. Does that make me only a heavy metal and rock enthusiast? No, not true at all. I'm a universal listener because I grew up listening to all kinds of music ranging from pop, dance, hip-hop, techno, classical, oldies, even R&B's. Toni Braxton, Boyz II Men, 2Pac, Coolio, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston. They were all great when suddenly the genre slowly turned sour and the music became souless and meaningless.

So what do I do know? I go back to basic. Over the past few years I've been listening to old music ranging from the 60's until the late 90's such as Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Duran Duran, Pink Floyd, Abba, Run-DMC, Beastie Boys, Ace of Base, AC/DC, The Beatles, Three Dog Night, The Police, etc. I never thought I'd be doing it but it felt really good. I find 80s and 90s boy bands to be more relaxing and fun to listen to than today's garbage. Oh, and let's not forget video game soundtracks. Akira Yamaoka, Masafumi Takada, Frank Klepacki, Koji Kondo, Nobuo Uematsu; they're simply the best.

The problem with these arguments is that they always revolve around popular music. Of course that's going to be bad for the most part as the target demographic seems to be 13-16 year olds. This however does not in any way mean that music today sucks, popular music but not music in general. Instead of just looking at what's popular and proclaiming that "today's music sucks" I recommend trying to find lesser known, truly independent artists. Sure they may be harder to find but that makes it all the more rewarding. Lately I've been listening to a lot of stuff that I've found through places like CBCRadio3 which features exclusively Canadian indie music. A lot of that stuff is truly great.

Ain't got a care in world, but got plenty of beer
Ain't got no money in my pocket, but I'm already here
And now, the dudes are lining up cause they hear we got swagger
But we kick em to the curb unless they look like Mick Jagger

Duders, seriously...this is art.  The beats are solid like snake, she's cute, and has good taste in music.  This is the rebirth of humankind and puts Ode to Joy to shame.

@HitmanAgent47: That's a pretty ignorant way to think of things. So if you compare an amazing indie artist who has sold 1000 albums to a fake, autotuned popstar who has sold 1million albums, achieved by the massive exposure to the general public on the radio and on tv, you would say the popstar is 1000 times more talented? Good theory you got there mate, shame it only works in about 6 instances...

I got the point in your first post :/

But look, OP, what you really have to do is actually ATTEMPT to find good music. You seem to be taking the easy way out, by listening to a few songs on the radio and posting that it sucks and that "all" music today sucks. But really, pop isn't the only music around right now, and you seem sort of oblivious to that. Alternative is alive and well, you sound like the kind of guy that really needs a subscription to satellite radio, because a simple click to my favorite Sirius XM station, Alt Nation, would  show you the talent of today's alt bands in a mere hour of listening.

Still need convincing? Open up a Pandora account, create a new station, and type in the name of a modern, or at least a 90's, band that you actually like. See what music comes up. You'll be surprised that *gasp* people CONTINUE to make music like they used to not even 20 years ago! And what's more, you'll expand your tastes past the small collection of groups and artists you already know.

These suggestions are all I have to help you stop being so bitter about today's music, and just accept that good music is just not put on a silver platter these days. Yes, the top 40 stations are playing crap, but the solution is to not listen to them, plain and simple. It's not like the world just up and decided to stop making the music they did before, the good bands just aren't at the front of the pack anymore. Dig deeper, you''ll like what you find.

The OP clearly calls out mainstream is the first sentence, and follows with the fact that it dominates the music of this generation. Dominates could refer to sales, which it does, or popularity, which it also does. It was a poor choice of words, but I made the connection that when the OP says "Today's Music", they're referring to popular mainstream music which happens to dominate all others, as the post kind of spells out for you. The thread intent is clearly focused on lambasting mainstream music of today, and I have a feeling the OP realizes there is good music hidden underneath the mainstream, as with every generation. The point of the thread is not to enlighten the OP, it's to bash mainstream music. Half of these posts could have been avoided if the OP just added "Pop" to the thread title.

@uniform: I understand he's calling out mainstream, which he's right to do, it's trash. But I don't think the point of this thread is to bash mainstream, because that just seems like a typical internet thing to do, and I'd like to believe that Giant Bomb tends to go above and beyond the typical internet thing. At one point, the OP actually willingly accepted some listening advice, though I can't quite remember the exact post, so he seems to be open to advice and enlightenment. A mainstream-bashing thread has been done so many times that it's unnecessary at this point.

The third post points out that there is good music today, and the OP is not looking hard enough. That post was ignored by the OP. The first reply from the OP was a reply to a scathing critique of Lady GaGa. Whether a mainstream bashing thread has been done to death or not, it certainly was the original intent.

@Djeffers03: There is a reason why they only sold 1000, it's more than a million for lady gaga, it's triple platium. It's not that these indie artist art good, rather it's your taste is obscure, listening to no name metal trash groups no one cares about.

On December 2, 2009, The Fame was nominated for six Grammy Awards and won Best Dance Recording for "Poker Face". The album was nominated for Album of the Year, and won the Grammy Award for Best Electronic/Dance Album at the 52nd Grammy Awards. On February 16, 2010, it won Best International Album at the 2010 BRIT Awards

I don't see how ppl can think madonna is talented and lady gaga is not. They are both performance artist with catchy tunes and lady gaga is the next madonna.

Maybe it's you who has lousy taste in no name alternative rock music. There is a reason why no one cares about it because maybe it sort of sucks. It's obscure and isn't all that appealing, they are like the noobs of the music industry and honestly deserves to only sell a thousand records because they are nobodies who appeals to nobody. Maybe you have a really bad taste in music, hating on the popular. Your the one who probally hate on good popular movies like avatar too and praise trash no one cares about that didn't make alot of money either, well that's your problem and it's called bad taste, bad taste in music and everything else. You probally play indie games too, idie is small budget trash with less talent. In the rap industry, these ppl are called haters and haters gonna hate on the best.

Really? Complaining about music videos being too sexual?

There's plenty of excellent music out there. You just won't find most of it on the radio. Why? The radio is owned by corporations who want to sell you what they want.

Also Lady Gaga is actually far from talentless and I'm not a pop fan.

There is always going to be good blood and bad blood in the entertainment business.

Back then, music execs considered "talents" as good blood; now it's the "catchiest rhyme" and "potential one hit wonder" that makes you a good blood in their eyes.
It's not really a "decline in overall quality" as you said, it's just "the stupid shit" getting all the recognition.
And then a change in takes over creation of music by artists (from expression to money making), we listen to Soulja Boy and Autotunes all the time.
And then somehow people got hooked up to that catchy "Just Dance" by Lady Gaga, so she made it. Now she's doing all those bizarre stuff and wearing weird clothes, and most disturbingly, many people approve of those things.

Back then it required some unique talents for you to succeed, now it's all luck.

You should blame that on today's teenagers. Not everyone is as innovative as some of us are. They just listen to shit they can dance to and sound good on ringtones.
That's why I listen to mostly underground tracks. Immortal Technique owns every single wack rapper out there added up and times 100.

I definitely agree with the post about how  "Mainstream music" sucks. For the past decade we have been subjugated to listening to horrible songs by everyone from NSync to Lil' Wayne to Lady GaGa, in fact when I redid my car stereo I left the radio out and simply listen to my iPod now. With that said there have been a lot of really talented people making great music, the post about Foo Fighters is a great example, for every no talent rock band on the radio there are a dozen bands like Foo Fighters that make quality music for the love of music. It is like this in every genre, sure Lil Wayne and the New Boys are garbage, but Jay-Z, Eminem, T.I. have been around, and newer cats like Drake are slowly taking back the radio. Look at country music, they cram garbage down people's throats but artists like Brad Paisley are still out there. The key is to avoid the radio and its attempts to control your mind and wallet and pick your own music. And to the dude that keeps begging us to like Lady GaGa, do you honestly think a website of mostly young men are going to want to listen to bad techno-ish songs by an ugly broad?

look harder for radio station. i do listen to radio because i found a radio station that has alternative rock type of music. MTV only shows green day really as for rock. i kind of noticed that rock type of music went to underground where people have to search for their music.

i've just been listening to my good metal, rock type of music.

You don't deserve to hear good music if you're not willing to look for it.  I don't care how big the industry is, larger culture feeding you music is NOT how you're supposed to do it.

There always has been good music but looking to anything resembling a radio to just give it to you is a fucking waste of time.

Being an old codger but ignoring older music are both equally valid ways to be a douchebag about music.

I listen to older music because the wheat has already been separated from the chaff. I could follow music blogs and download torrents from sxsw but I dont want to spend hours listening to garbage to find the good stuff.

My old roommate is a music nerd who spends hours a day on last.fm and 4chan's /mu/ board. He introduced me to Fucked Up and Bomb the Music Industry!, the only current stuff I listen to. I know there is more out there, but I cant be bothered to hunt it down.

it's a pretty ridiculous thing to say that all of "today's music" is bad. radio music has and always will be bad - it's what the majority wants. easy music that provokes nothing. if you want better music, you're going to have to dig around.

The second sentence of that post contradicts the rest of it; you say that "it's not that these indie artist art good, rather it's your taste is obscure [sic]," however, you seem to go against this idea a mere paragraph later and equate, or at least try and establish a correlation, between talent and record sales. The fact of the matter is that there is no set of rules to music, nor is there some arbiter that we can turn to who can tell us what is good and what is bad. Since what's good music and bad music is not something we can determine, an artist or band becoming popular simply means that they have a sound that appeals to the tastes of a lot of people (this does not mean they're good, just popular), or great marketing which has given them lots of exposure. Usually it's a mix of the two.

Winning awards and selling records means that an artist is popular. Nothing more. Also, I'm not "hating" on Lady Gaga, Eminem, or whoever you think I'm slighting by saying what I said above. All I'm saying is that they aren't good by virtue of how popular they are, but by how good you think they are. Ultimately, what you like is what matters.

Most of these artists are examples of how current mainstream rock music has gone to shit.

The last days where the bulk of Mainstream was awesome was in the 90's when bands like Alice in Chains and hard rock ruled the 90's era, The only mainstream bands i listen to now is probably Deftones & Killswitch engage, but thats because Deftones is different, they actualy make kickass unique music, Deftones while mainstream their music is a tad bit to complex for the "Pop" masses to decipher. The rest i listen to are either all old hard rock/metal bands or not so  popular  current bands like The Black Angels, Band of Horses, Sylosis etc.

The best new music is online.  The shit they play on the radio is all produced by the record companies scraping up the American Idol crowd.  Seriously.  If you listen you'll notice that every other song on the major radio stations is and AI star or wanna be.

Personally, I admire Lady Gaga's talent and I appreciate her willingness to be out there.  She's a PiTA of a Human Being though.

@SirPsychoSexy: I couldn't agree with you more. Pop bands and R&B singers nowadays are using remixes in their songs, recycling the same beats over and over again. They just loop some old songs, start dressing like sluts and start singing about sex.

I totally agree with ChickenPants. There is great current music out there for everyone, believe me. I very rarely look at the Top 40 music chart and see at least 1 or 2 songs that I even like...

Rush 70's and 80's > everything else

I'm not a fan of todays 'Mainstream Music', I'm more in to classic/alternative/prog/rock (and roll).

I think you should title the thread that music on the radio sucks because there is so much good music being produced at the moment. Sure things like Akon and N Dubz are a cancer on society but have you listened to Crystal casltes new album? How about 65daysofstatic new album? Ever heard of a band called Twin Atlantic? You can't just write off all music because you only hear crap. Thats what mainstream music is; crap.

And don't diss Lady Gaga, she put on one of the best live shows I've seen in a long time.

By the way, you said you like techno, try this on for size.
