Today's Music Sucks

Mainstream music nowadays is so boring and dull. They lack soul, meaning and good beats. Now it's all about money, fame, sex and gangsta wannabes. Today's music is dominated by all these clubbing and R&B artists, and they suck. I hate them. I basically stopped listening to the radio a few years ago because all I hear are just utter nonsense. Same goes with music videos. All I see on MTV are artists dressing like prostitutes, club scenes, sex scenes and again gangsta wannabes. It's just so revolting to look at. I mean, I'm fine with having sexy scenes on music videos because who won't want to see them...but there's a limit to it. And they say video games are bad for the kids.

What happened to all the alternative and rock bands? I don't see them or hear them anymore. They've suddenly gone underground as they are dominated by these foolish genre. At least that's how I see it. Last time there was Rage Against The Machine, Limp Bizkit, Korn, Three Doors Down, Evanescence, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Staind, Green Day, Sum 41, etc. Even though most of them haven't been active in terms of making new albums, what about the new rock artists? I'm sure they've been wanting to release some new rock tunes of their own but they can't because today's music is dominating the ring, making the rock genre fall on deaf ears. Does that make me only a heavy metal and rock enthusiast? No, not true at all. I'm a universal listener because I grew up listening to all kinds of music ranging from pop, dance, hip-hop, techno, classical, oldies, even R&B's. Toni Braxton, Boyz II Men, 2Pac, Coolio, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston. They were all great when suddenly the genre slowly turned sour and the music became souless and meaningless.

So what do I do know? I go back to basic. Over the past few years I've been listening to old music ranging from the 60's until the late 90's such as Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Duran Duran, Pink Floyd, Abba, Run-DMC, Beastie Boys, Ace of Base, AC/DC, The Beatles, Three Dog Night, The Police, etc. I never thought I'd be doing it but it felt really good. I find 80s and 90s boy bands to be more relaxing and fun to listen to than today's garbage. Oh, and let's not forget video game soundtracks. Akira Yamaoka, Masafumi Takada, Frank Klepacki, Koji Kondo, Nobuo Uematsu; they're simply the best.

You obviously aren't looking hard enough.  Just because "mainstream" music sucks now doesn't mean that music in general is bad.  I hardly listen to anything older than 90s.  It's not like people stopped being creative after 1970.  The Postal Service, The Killers, Death Cab for Cutie, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Arcade Fire, Bloc Party, Gorillaz, Metric, Modest Mouse...I could go on.  If anything, since it's easier to record and get your music out to the world, there's a lot bigger pool of artists to find music from, meaning in the end you're going to get a lot more good music.  Modern music is the shit.

Anyone who includes lady gaga in the "good" music category is an idiot with horrible taste.

Lady gaga's new stuff is quite good imo. Her new song reminds me of ace of base. You might also like eminem's new cd too.

"
If that's what counts as "good" then I don't even want to imagine what is bad. I can't listen to "Poker Face" for more than two seconds without wanting to jam a pen into my ear drums. What a useless talentless bitch. The only reason she's famous is because of those retarded music videos. "
That's the spirit.

I listen to Lady Gaga more often than I do anything else. I also have tickets to see Rush in September.

You can be open-minded about music, instead of just saying "HEY! You don't like my genre of music so YOU"RE STUPID!1!1!"

It's so hard to find good music nowdays.  The ease of getting it is why it's hard.  So many bands out there can create so many songs so easily now and put them out independently with technology.   I don't want to listen to any band who isn't signed with a fairly large fanbase.  Doesn't have to be huge like GA GA ,  but a pretty good following.  Why?  I don't want to wade through tons of shitty unsigned bands. Be honest,   there are plenty of unsigned bands that are shitty. Signed  doesn't automatically make you like Ga-ga,  you could be signed to an independent or a smaller label.  They're more likely to sign based upon talent,  because that's what that audience wants.

Anyway,  it's harder to find music nowdays  because it's too easy. Ironically,  I just end up listening to bands who I either heard on the radio that are probably from 10+ years ago.  So I completely understand why the OP feels the way he does,  even if it's partly because of nostalgic reasons. There's a reason why radio is as great as it is.  I hate to say it, but without somebody giving me an idea of what the possible good albums are that are out there,  I'm completely  lost.

Honestly, when people say shit like this, they're usually so old the wind would turn them into dust. I don't enjoy music from the 60s, 70s, or 80s. I was born in 1987, and I enjoy music from now. In 50 years I'll probably bitch.

More often than not though the people saying crap like this are just super snobby. They probably have a Flo Rida album hidden behind all their 70s crap and preach the downfall of music to anyone who will listen.

Someone needs to strap a bomb to their chest and walk into the department of music at MTV, which is incredibly small now since it's not about music,
it's about whores and dude bros fucking whores.  Rock, which has been dead for many years, will soon only exist in rock bars in the future.  When old fucks like us
will be bitching about the good old days, and we enjoy the very few last Rock artists.  It's just like Jazz, only exists in a few places now.

I have to accept that I will always hate the music that's out now, which is strange because i'm 19, so going by mainstream teenager law, i'm supposed to love rap
But I don't, I enjoy my parents music.

@Djeffers03: There is a reason why they only sold 1000, it's more than a million for lady gaga, it's triple platium. It's not that these indie artist art good, rather it's your taste is obscure, listening to no name metal trash groups no one cares about.

On December 2, 2009, The Fame was nominated for six Grammy Awards and won Best Dance Recording for "Poker Face". The album was nominated for Album of the Year, and won the Grammy Award for Best Electronic/Dance Album at the 52nd Grammy Awards. On February 16, 2010, it won Best International Album at the 2010 BRIT Awards

I don't see how ppl can think madonna is talented and lady gaga is not. They are both performance artist with catchy tunes and lady gaga is the next madonna.

Maybe it's you who has lousy taste in no name alternative rock music. There is a reason why no one cares about it because maybe it sort of sucks. It's obscure and isn't all that appealing, they are like the noobs of the music industry and honestly deserves to only sell a thousand records because they are nobodies who appeals to nobody. Maybe you have a really bad taste in music, hating on the popular. Your the one who probally hate on good popular movies like avatar too and praise trash no one cares about that didn't make alot of money either, well that's your problem and it's called bad taste, bad taste in music and everything else. You probally play indie games too, idie is small budget trash with less talent. In the rap industry, these ppl are called haters and haters gonna hate on the best.

"
If you're going to measure music, don't do it in number of sales. The only real way of "comparing" music, would involve stripping it down to the bare bones and comparing their compositions. For instance, Ms. Gaga's songs usually revolve around a beat in 4/4 with a melody based on a major/minor scale, while a typical song by the group The Dillinger Escape Plan will revolve around several rotating poly-rhythms (i.e. several rhythms that are juxtaposed against each other) and poly-meters (same Idea as a poly-rhythm.) Their songs will typically change keys and styles, or they will incorparate different elements from other genres (See the jazz break in Sugar Coated Sour.)

Now, you will probably continue to lash out with silly remarks such as, "Record Sales=Talent", but keep in mind, Lady Gaga didn't do anything new or anything that will really change the face of the industry, The Dillinger Escape Plan pioneered a genre of music (Mathcore) and influenced people to follow in their footsteps, and in turn, doing something that will earn them a place in music history, no matter how minor it may be.

Also, keep in mind, Mozart never sold a single record or won an award for his music.

Todays music is nothing but generic overrated crap. Most artists im sure don't give a crap about the music and only care about their undeserved income because of mindless zombies who buy their album or songs simply because its "in the top 10 chart"

This thread is stupid. If you honestly can't find anything good that's come out recentely, then that's your problem. If you've only just discovered Beatles, Led Zep, Dylan, etc. then you have no standing in a music debate. You know why? BECAUSE THEY'VE SOLD MORE RECORDS AND ARE MORE FAMOUS THAN ANY OF THE CURRENT ARTISTS YOU MENTIONED. Not all music that's mainstream is bad, and not all new records are terrible. Do you think there's anyone more mainstream than the Beatles? With the exception of MAYBE Elvis, I'd say no.

Mainstream stuff is generally terrible, but I do think modern mainstream is getting worse, or am I getting out of touch with the kids? And their need to rhyme “bling” with “sing”.

Aren't we lucky that there's so much music out there that people who (understandably) don't like new music can delve in to an almost endless back catalogue of music they probably will like, and those of us who (also understandably) are fans of modern bands and more mainstream current music, are treated to an endless stream of music from new talent.
