I have only read the first one (revelation I believe) and I liked it; although i thought it was a bit on the short side and kinda ended suddenly. It didn't really compel me to read the other books immediately but i'll probably get around to it.
I'm also concerned about the gameplay in a modern setting (It shouldn't be splinter cell basically), but the story demands a much more Desmond centric story. Thats what the entire series has been building up to, if they do another animus story then they will have a very hard time justifying it in the over arching storyline. (Also the ending of Brotherhood pretty much ensures a Desmond centric ACIII). For now i'm going to try to trust the developers in bringing the gameplay to the modern day without radical changes that turn it into something like splinter cell or uncharted.
No the assassin's guild and shop buying are entirely optional although making money will be slower if you ignore hose things and some story missions require some money (only 2500 to 3000 which is basically nothing) but you should be able to get through the main story.
I am stuck in the middle of this mission in the cargo plane where the objective marker on the box of "Nova 6", but nothing happens. The explorable area is tiny, my squad mates do not repsond to anything. I have to be missing something but i am at a loss.
