My Games of 2017

2017 hasn't been a productive year as far as finishing games goes. I've spent a reasonable amount of time looking at game releases and adding them to my ever growing steam wishlist, or looking at the Nintendo Switch and wondering if it is really worth it for the couple of exclusives I'd want to play.

Games that slipped through the cracks:

Night in the woods

There are some games you know you will enjoy. And this is one of them. Everything I've heard screams cute art style-good soundtrack-engrossing and emotional story. And the reason I haven't thrown the 12 quid at it yet? Who knows. I'm sure to pick this one up over the christmas period.

Tacoma

I am a stroll-playing-game fan (thanks for the new terminology, Ben Pack) and I'd like to think I've developed a pretty good sense of the ones worth playing - admittedly for me, this is most of them. So Gone Home presents "abandoned spaceship" is way up there in the "stuff I should really just spend the money on and play" priority list.

Hollow knight

Any game likened to the best game in the world (Ori and the Blind Forest) is a done deal for me. Unfortunately, this game got stuck at just the wrong price, only dropping when I had other things to buy. And there's a niggling feeling in the back of my brain that just because something is likened to Ori, doesn't mean it's going to turn out well once you add actual combat to the difficulty.

Yooka Laylee

After being advised to wait for a big performance patch before going ahead and buying this one, other stuff kept coming up. One day, Yooka Laylee. One day.

Rime

A game set in an amazing setting, with some neat puzzles that's a completely enclosed 6 hour experience? Where do I sign up? I'll admit, the pricing of this game combined with the reviews of not quite right controls did push this one down the priority list, although I am sure I'd enjoy it if I owned it.

Life is Strange: bts

I don't feel too bad about this one. This is a game for 2018, when it's fully released - I don't much like paying for things episodically anyway. Life is strange was excellent though, and I'm looking forwards to revisiting the world (even if I DID swear that a sequel would ruin the finale, this prequel seems to have been put together well from what I've heard)

Uncharted: LL

I was a late arrival to uncharted. Last summer I finished 3, and was all set to jump into 4 when I realised that playing through multiple Naughty Dog games one after another was just a bit much. So I'll work my way through 4, and then this one in what is all but guaranteed to be an incredible story

Divinity: OSII

If enough people tell you you'd like a game, it's probably true right? Although I haven't really played a ton of cRPGs, any party based fantasy RPG game has my interest, especially when it has reviews this good. Throw in the possibility of multiplayer, and it's looking amazing.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2

I have to admit, I loved Xenoblade Chronicles. The story was absurd, and I saw every plot twist from a mile off but it was a guilty pleasure, much like some people love TV soaps. And packaged around that was an excellent JRPG, with some genuinely enjoyable combat and *gasp* actual varied enemy designs. If I had a switch, this is the game I'd buy to go with it, but I don't think I can justify the price for this one game right now!

Horizon

Ah Horizon. I have to admit, this one I'm not so sure on. If you were not a ps4 exclusive (which automatically limits my playtime and area to at home in a cold room) maybe we would have gotten on better. Or maybe after near 100%-ing the Witcher 3, and before that Assassin's Creed 4, I'm just over open world games, for now. I'm sure you're an amazing story, but does it really need to be so long?

Right yeah, I was supposed to be writing a list of the games I HAVE played.....

List items

  • Man. I nearly passed over this game because of the criticisms to do with the actual gameplay, but I am glad I didn't. Although the start of the game starts off slow, it really picks up. I'd recommend it to anyone, just be sure to play it alone, with headphones.

  • There is nothing on this earth which is as satisfying as completing your daily chores in your slime ranch, collecting some chickens to give breakfast to your tabby slimes and visiting the puddle slimes by the waterfall. I eventually came to the conclusion that I'd been tricked into playing a clicker game with a nice wrapper, but I'd had so much fun I didn't mind.

  • BEST STYYYLLLLLEEEE. Wait, that's not what this list is. Still, for a game with relatively mediocre puzzles, it sure left an impression.

  • Games I didn't much care for the gameplay of but still came away loving seem to feature in this list, huh. I never got my head around fantasy basketball, unlike the Transistor gameplay, but this game still hits the spot for a new transistor game. Even taking out the basketball, you've got a really solid text adventure with some amazing art and sound design to go with it.

  • What started with multiple technical difficulties resulting in me playing the first "story chapter" nearly 4 times through (and that's my least favourite one by far) eventually turned into the game I was promised. It's not a game I'd recommend everyone, but anyone who knows they like the genre will get something from it (although honestly, Lewis's chapter near the end of the game is such an innovative design I'd say it's worth playing just to experience that)

  • I've followed Laura Shigihara on youtube for a while now on and off, so I knew she was making a game. I have to admit, I dismissed it as another RPGmaker game, until I finally picked it up after recommendations from none other than my dad. It's an excellent blend of stroll-playing-game and classical RPG (without any combat), filled with pixel characters with more personality than most "prettier" games.

  • - AMPLIFIED: the DLC. Every time I stop playing this game and come back, I seem to start from scratch, but it's so much fun. I haven't beaten most of the DLC characters, and I doubt I ever will, but it's still a phenomenal game.

  • Mike Bithell has accidentally made a really fascinating sci-fi universe, and I'm hoping he keeps adding to the world created by Thomas was Alone and Volume. I have to admit, the lack of Danny Wallace in this game was a little distressing though, it's like it wasn't even a Bithell game!

  • 2014.... yeah. I was late to the party, but this was amazing. I'll admit, there were a few puzzles near the end which had me wanting to throw my keyboard out my window, but we got there in the end. I haven't made it through all the DLC, but maybe I'll get there by 2020 at this rate?
