The music in this game is so good!

Good tunes can go a long way. I liked the original games enough when I played them, but my memories of them remain high because of the soundtracks followed by bright and colorful art. A lot of the music has stuck with me after all these years. And I had a great time playing through Sonic CD again but with the Japanese soundtrack for the first time thanks to Whitehead's remake a few years back. Game held up for me, and this one is looking like pure and simple fun.

On the bombcast, ya'll seemed unsure about a followup to this, but I feel like they could totally make a sequel in this style, with remixed old levels and brand new original zones.

From what I've seen, there's

1 zone from Sonic 1

2 zones from Sonic 2

2 zones from Sonic CD

1 zone from Sonic 3

2 zones from Sonic & Knuckles

4 all new original zones

So a lot of areas from the originals to pull from still, probably close to two dozen. Along with however many new zones they can cook up. I'm more for all new stuff but I'd still like to see their take on Ice Cap Zone for example.

Shit, @Jeff . I don't think I ever knew about the F-Zero AX game in full being accessible on the Gamecube disc of GX with cheats.

I unlocked the arcade tracks the old fashioned way - by finishing all four GPs on Master difficulty, that was brutal. One of the most, if not the most, ridiculous accomplishments in all of video games for me. I believe my lifespan was shortened from those events, should have gotten that gameshark instead.

I thought that King or the director (or both) revealed The Dark Tower movie is a continuation / reboot of the books. It makes sense if you read them all, but it also means newcomers get to start from the beginning as it were. And it's really the only way you could "adapt" that series to the screen, at least for one 2hr long movie. There's no way they'd be able to do that insanity justice outside of a many season HBO type series, and even then it would be picked apart ala Game of Thrones on the all the differences and divergences. This allows them to take many liberties while also picking and choosing what they want to cover from the source material, I think I read something about the movie covering some story aspects from the early books as well as later ones, so it's definitely not going for a direct translation. Pretty cool.

I was excited from the beginning when they announced Idris Elba, he's fucking great. Can't wait.

It took me a loooong time to give Rick & Morty a shot after seeing the not-pilot that was The Real Animated Adventures of Doc & Mharti. I assumed the series would be more of that and was confused by the love it was getting. Glad I finally gave it a shot, though. It's a decent show and this VR thing looks fun.

Maybe 13 year old Dan would've actually loved this crap and that is why Dan is freaking out over it?

I know I've definitely rolled my eyes at something because it's 100% something 13 year old me would have enjoyed.

That might not be far off. He really seemed to be overcompensating with his hatred toward the style of humor this game was attempting and was constantly reiterating how he would have hated it as a kid.

Everyone likes dumb shit as kids and their tastes evolve and progress and refine over time. The dumber and more purile, the more hilarious for some younger folk. I'm witnessing this right now with my nephew. The shit he finds funny on youtube is absolutely perplexing to me and just as stupid as this garbage, but I can't say for certain I would hate it the same as I do now if I were a young and impressionable dummy like him.

i am happy that the metroidvania well which was near bone dry a few years ago now runneth over. i thank shadow complex for spearheading that initiative.

I think I'd give more credit to the regular string of GBA & DS 2D Castlevania games (and their massive absence after 2008's Order of Ecclesia) being a huge part of why people want to continue playing and creating this style of game, despite the potential burnout of so many similar ones in a row. Shadow Complex was great of course, but it didn't exactly open the floodgates and lead to more games of that type on the home consoles like we all hoped it would, unfortunately. We're still waiting for a followup to Shadow Complex itself!

The Metroid / Castlevania / exploration / action / platformer draw is real, as is the major publisher reluctance to make that sort of game, as evidenced by the lack of a Shadow Complex 2 and bold new 2D Castlevanias or Metroids from Konami & Nintendo. Further proven with the successful Bloodstained kickstarter (as well as others like Chasm, Ghost Song, La Mulana 2, etc). Hollow Knight was born of a kickstarter, too! But I had no idea it even existed until it hit Steam. It's crazy how a massive game like this can still fly under the radar of someone who claims to be a big fan of the genre.

Anyway, Shadow Complex was a great one-off but it was mostly the super indie scene keeping it alive since then on PC until slightly bigger and awesome home console stuff like Guacamelee! and Ori and the Blind Forest and Axiom Verge started showing up 4+ years after Shadow Complex on the next generation of systems. Now we still have tons of shorter and smaller scale indie games in this vein coming, then the occasional larger scale ones like Hollow Knight. It does not seem to be slowing down, thankfully. Yet still not enough to sway Nintendo into revisiting a 2D Metroid.

@murdoc_: Well, you get abilities and get different charms that do a lot of neat stuff, though some of the abilities are pretty standard for a metroidvania. Like wall jumping, dashing, double-jumping etc. Once you get those the moving around feels really fast and fluid. And especially with the charms once you get enough notches to add a bunch of them, you can experiment with different combinations for builds, like if you want really good defensive buffs and abilities, or focus a lot on the attack power, or perhaps healing.

Speaking of abilities,

@alex didn't really show it off in the quick look, but you also start out with downward slash that lets you pogo jump off enemies and spikes and some of those breakable foreground objects, allowing you save yourself from some damage or even get some extra height from enemies and objects nearby to reach unreachable ledges before various upgrades. As well as traverse some areas that seem unpassable, or just evade enemies while also attacking them from above. It's very satisfying to use but kind of hard to convey in text.

It's fairly Ducktales-esque? Although you can't just pogo anywhere on the normal ground like you can in that game. Still, it remained one of my favorite abilities/attacks all the way to the end. Fun!

This game was way bigger and way better than I thought it would be. Really enjoyed it. Especially loved the atmosphere, first 2D game I've seen come close to rivaling the Dark Souls style of world building.

Getting some Noby Noby Boy vibes but there's an actual game beyond the basic fun movement and control stuff. Might be thin but it looks entertaining.
