E3 08- Aren't we just pawns in the console wars?

I've been reading a lot of blogs and articles on who 'won' E3, and they inevitably end up just sounding like cheerleading for whoever's piece of plastic that you like the best.  Oddly enough I didn't hear much discussion about the games of E3.  Hell I tried to start a blog on Gamespot about how one game in particular, Fat Princess, impressed me, and a poster who I normally have a lot of respect for came in and responded with some anti-Sony diatribe, and tried to convince me that MS had a better show, and that Castle Crashers was the superior game.

Has E3 always just been that moment in the year where the console manufacturers all drop their pants and measure what they've got in comparison to the other guy?  Maybe so... That stuff isn't interesting.  I mean it is good to see that every console manufacturer and software developer is trying to one up the other guy, as it does lead to a better experience for all of us, but I thought E3 was supposed to be about games.  I guess that is why I liked this year's E3 better than most folks.  I saw plenty of games that I can't wait to play.  I don't really care if the press conferences were lackluster.  Give me Fallout 3, Little Big Planet, Fable 2, Resident Evil 5, Gears 2, KZ2, Fat Princess, Castle Crashers, fl0wer, etc.

I guess I don't see the need for cynicism as we head into one of the best holiday seasons of our nerdy lives.  I think that sometimes we feel the need to fight Nintendo*, Sony or Microsoft's battles for them, and that we spend more time doing that than talking about actual games, or better yet, playing them.

*- Just an odd observation.  My spellcheck tells me that Nintendo isn't a word, but it recognizes both Sony and Microsoft.
