On our office Christmas tree we have tags for kids who live in an orphanage. Each tag has things the kid has asked for for Christmas. I saw one for an 11 year old boy who wants a PS3 controller and "video games". Naturally, I picked this one.

The controller leads me to believe the video games would need to be PS3 games (clearly, this child has some class) - a list which I would readily be able to put together quickly based on what I like, however, these would probably not be appropriate for an 11-year-old (while I let my 10 year old play Dark Souls when he wants, I would feel odd about giving some kid I don't know Dark Souls unless I was sure the kid was either older than 18 or had ready access to a counselor or psychologist).

ANYWAY - I'm thinking of grabbing about 3 games + a controller for him. Easy picks are the Lego games (especially Star Wars, given the time of year) - but I'm wondering if there are other more obscure picks that I could still find, but that this kid would be unlikely to already have.

Any suggestions?

Ugh - let's see - probably World of Warcraft, to a terrible extent.

All collector's editions, and active account since launch:

$80 a pop for the editions = 7*$80 = $560.

Then, like a moron, I've only gone month to month since November 2004 = 13 years * 12 months + 1 month = 157 months * $14.99 = $2,353.43

Then - like an even bigger idiot, I've moved 2 characters and changed factions on two due to guild changes = 2 moves + 2 factions = 4 * $60 = $240

So - $560 + $2,353.43 + $240 = $3,153.43 total.

Alright - now I'm depressed.

My biggest was in the original Phantasy Star 1:

I was at the end of the game - and there is a dungeon that leads to a section where you literally just walk through a few parts and you're at the last battle. I'm typing this from memory (played this when I was a kid at original release), but the dungeon forks - go, say, left and you go to a different area, go right and you're on your way to the King and the final boss.

For some reason - I NEVER went the right way there, but knew I needed to get to the last area. I spent, literally, 1.5 years coming back to that game periodically and never managed to find that turn. I re-explored every area on every dungeon of every planet over and over before finally one night I saw the turn I wasn't making - went there and BOOM - there's the final boss.

By then, I was so over-leveled and powered that I practically slept through all the fights. I was both elated that I'd finally beaten the game and embarrassed that it had taken me so long. Note - the path wasn't hidden at all - and going back to it, it was clearly obvious that was the way to go.
