How I came across the Giant Bomb and why I'll never leave.

The Giant Bomb website was first shown to me roughly two years ago by that friend, that friend everyone has. The guy who is always one step ahead of the curve, the guy who knows about it before everyone else does. I don't mean to say he was the first 'outsider' to discover the Giant Bomb but he's the only other person I know of that knows about the Whiskey Media Family. He showed me the site and at first I was quite aprehensive, for as much time as I spend on the internet I'm still quite a wuss, I had a quick look (no pun intended (regardless of how funny or more likely not funny you found that.(What's with all the brackets?) (A bracket within a bracket; Inception))). I left the site and didn't return for some time. That time was when I discovered the weekly Eargasm that is the Giant Bombcast. Led by the smooth talking Ryan Davis, the brains of the operation and supported by the backing vocals of Jeff Gerstmann, a man with a mind for video games similar to Peter Molyneaux (the parody twitter account that is of course), Vincent 'The Italian Stallion' Caravella who has the maddest of mad video producing skills and last but by no means least Bradly Shoemaker. 'The Mouth of the South.'

This delectable podcast of indeterminable length makes my week every Tuesday. I get to join the gang in the sweaty sticky hot podcast room and laugh while I learn about all manners of things like, well videogames to apple pie with cheese. These guys create a sense of comunity found nowhere else on the web and make you feel like you're one of them. The guys have huge knowledge of all things videogames and listening to their banter has only made me hungrier for this knowledge. Over the years The Bomb Squad has influenced and entertained me so much that I would just like to say thank you.

The Giant bomb has beecome such an integral part of my life but as I mentioned earlier I was too afraid to create a profile and join the comunity, that is until two days ago. It took me reading this article for my passion of creating things to be reinvigorated. So create I shall! I'm going to try keep up this blogging thing because I want to write about videogames.

So this is all my brain can manage at two o'clock in the morning but I would be very interested in how you found the Giant Bomb and I'd love to hear any other sort of feedback/criticism constructive or not.

I share a similar relationship to Giant Bomb. I feel like I don't see as much of the internet anymore, I'm too busy here.

I remember hearing about what happened to Jeff at Gamespot and how several other editors left with him. A few months later I heard about Giant Bomb, I had a peak at the site then but didn't stick around. Some time later I heard about their Rogue Warrior Quick Look on a Star Trek message board I frequent and it made me laugh - A LOT - I started checking out the site more often. A couple of weeks later they did their Game of the Year podcasts and I loved it. I loved hearing the raw discussion, the honest discourse, back-and-forth. I continued checking out the site fairly often, but about a year ago they posted the Wipeout Wii Quick Look and I laughed at that a great deal. I became a paid member when that was offered in the fall last year, and my useage of the site has only gone up since.

At this point I didn't even visit any other video game related websites. If it's not on Giant Bomb, I don't care.

I don't know why, but your constant reference to the site as "the" Giant Bomb is kind of weird to me for some reason. Mainly 'cus the site doesn't have "the" in the title.

Anyway, assuming that first point came off dickish (sorry if it did, i couldn't help but say) I came to Giant Bomb several years ago. After Gamespot became boring to me I kind of wandered around the internet for awhile.

I started watching an internet reviewer who goes by Spoony from youtube to his website which I wont name so i don't look like I'm advertising it. One day one of the comments to one of his VLogs where he talked about Persona 4 mentioned the Endurance Run of Persona 4 Vinny and Jeff were doing. I had not realized Jeff had gone on to make another site and actualy at that point didn't even know it was Jeff from Gamespot..

Intrigued, I watched the endurance run episode 1. Took a while for me to figure out how to find it, but eventually I did. It was very funny and after I realized it was Jeff and Vinny from Gamespot. Content just kind of kept me around as on Gamespot I liked their reviews- here I think they're really funny and entertaining so I know there will always be something interesting to watch or read.

At this point, for me, Giant Bomb is the best video game website on the internet.

Cool to have ya, bro.
Also since it seems like we're sharing our stories here, I might as well tell you mine:

I was never much of an internet guy myself, and didn't really become one until about 4 years ago when I stumbled on a manga site called Mangafox. I used to hang around the off-topic forums and was part of the RP thread stuff, but then it got boring. No one really came on as much as I did after a while, so it felt mostly empty and the mangas I was interested in started ending and I was left with only that kawaii shit.

So I left and stumbled upon Cracked, but the forums were too filled with dumb-asses, so  I just read the articles, and one day there was one that mentioned the whole Jeff getting kicked out of Gamespot thing with a link to Giant Bomb.
So I watched some of the Quick Looks, read the forums, and ended up joining after a while. Quite happy that I did, since I used to get all my game info from my brother, and he has horrible taste.

Also many of the people in the community are awesome, and while I might not have any people that I've become serious friends with here, I still thank that we're a big happy family.

I found the site when they did the first Borderlands quick look. I found a link to it because I really followed the game at release, and thank god I did. Even when I had no clue who these guys were, listening to them playing borderlands, having a conversation, and joking around with each other had me entertained immediately. Then I dug deeper and found the bombcasts, reviews, and much more. I found the whole attitude and atmosphere in their work to be less like something they do just as a job, and more like just a group of guys having fun in the video game industry. That's what sold me on the site. The fact that we get to hear more from them then just pre-written review scripts and news write-ups is also what I really liked. It felt like we actually get to know them beyond just a username that says staff under it.

Now almost 2 years later and I'm involved in the forums, and Giant Bomb has become the only gaming site I go to. Giant Bomb is the best gaming site out there as far as I'm concerned. There's no other place that is quite like it. Really this goes for all of whiskey media.

I knew about Giantbomb before it went live because I was a fan(not a HUGE one, but a fan) of what they did on gamespot when I saw it anyway. I really didn't care about Jeff or what happened after the firing(I was more of a fan of Alex, & Greg when they were at GS), so I really didn't see the need to go look at the site when it came up & never payed attention. Around when Resident Evil 5 came out a friend of mine(So yeah, boom) from another forum(Noobtoob.com, greatest group of gaming people on the net) told me over XBL about the Bombcast. I said okay I'll check it out because we had about the same sense of humor.

Then I started coming to the site, & couldn't stop watching the videos, I met the whole Giant Bomb crew at PAX '09, I got way into the Shin Megami Tensei Series(I bought all the games for the PS2, a years long quest that came to an end with the highest amount I paid for a single game was $40. Considering that some before re-prints were going for $160 & up USED). & all the great jokes I have to whip out is priceless.

Now almost 2.5 years later I lesson to the Bombcast every day at work(long story, I just can =P, & yes repeats)

Like the song by Even Brass says, My Heart Belongs To Giantbomb.

I feel special cause I was one of the people who followed jeff for years at gamespot was outraged at his departure and stayed with him through his secret underground blog and arrow pointing down podcast, through the old crap office, to the whiskey media we see today... What a journey it's been...

@roomservice: Nice to meet you, Shawn. I'm a fellow recluse here on the site!

As I recall, I first heard about the Arrow Pointing Down beta podcast from a Digg story (back when Digg was worth anything) and gave it a listen. Drinks! I was instantly hooked, and spent the next couple of hours looking up youtube videos of the old Gamespot crew doing their thing. Following the podcast became an integral part of my week, and when they talked about their new site I was immediately on board. Watching the "How to Build a Bomb" videos only solidified my loyalty to the bomb crew, and I've been here every since. Bombcast every week!

Really just so glad I found this site.

I used to hang around GS then moved here after the whole Jeff thing.  I think I actually stopped going on game sites for awhile inbetween my switch though because I know I didn't join GB when it first started.

Nice post! I actually started following the guys when it was just Jeff and Ryan sitting at a desk, drink testing, and occasionally talking about games. Hell, I even registered my username in advance when I found out they were doing their own site.

well welcome to giantbomb duder. i got to giantbomb from when it first started. people from gamespot forums started posting saying jeff is back, check out giantbomb. i joined but stayed with gamespot for a while. then i got banned from that website and came here. a lot of people here are also refugees from gamespot.

i also like this website because the community is big but small. i see the same people here all the time.

Ahh the drink tests back when they were innocent and not boring to listen to, those were truly good times.

Never is a strong word, but at the moment giant bomb is pretty awesome. I'll agree with that.

I have been keeping up with these duders and their extended posse since just before Greg Kasavin was EIC at Gamespot.

Don't honestly remember what I did before then, as far as game news websites go. Certainly didn't have a home, and it took years before I even made a Gamespot account. I used to be a big magazine collector until the end of Next Generation in 2002.

A few years ago Kotaku had a story about web sites that did stuff when you entered the Konami code, so I went down the list of sites and entered the code into each one to see what happened.  When I got to Giant Bomb they had one of the Persona 4 Endurance Run episodes on the home page.  Being a huge Persona 3/4 fan I made sure to check it out and was immediately hooked on the site.  I started out just watching the ERs then moved on to Quick Looks then the Bombcast, and now I even get my news here.

@CornBREDX: Don't worry the point wasn't dickish. You're probably right I'm not really sure myself, it's just the way I always refer to the website in conversation. Anyway thanks for reading and contributing.

Nice, allways great to see how this site grows.

I still have a bookmark labeled "GiantBomb - blowing up this summer" (which leads to GiantBomb.com so its useless as that is on my panel for quick acces), from the time when this was just a dream. I remember the drama when Jeff was fired from Gamespot and I didn't like that at all! Little did I know what it all would eventually lead to: this very moment, when we can say we are on the right website.

Glad to see you decided to create a GB account.  As for me, my brother knew about GB since it launched and raved about it all the time.  After a while I finally decided to check it out myself and have been hooked ever since!  At first I was a quest whore, attempting to complete quest after quest after quest.  Eventually that calmed down and I started appreciating all the other great things GB has to offer, although the quest whore in me comes back any time there's a new community quest posted up on the main page lol

I followed Patrick Klepek (sp?) over here from G4 (he was always one of my favorite commentators on Feedback), got hooked on the quests, sets, and achievements, started noticing that some old games that I really love were in need of some serious Wiki-ing, and now I am entirely invested in the site and community (even though it's only been like a week).

Plus, it's great to have some place to go and chat with like-minded individuals during work that isn't blocked by our crappy internet filter.

There was a period of a few years where I didn't pay very close attention to games.  When I got back into it, I went to Gamespot (my former favorite review site) and noticed that Jeff wasn't there anymore.  His reviews were my favorite so his absence caught my attention.  I then googled to see what he was up to and found the whole story and Giant Bomb along with it.

Welcome to Giantbomb.com. I found Giantbomb because I had been following Gamespot since probably around 2003/2004. When Jeff was fired, I looked up what he was doing, and found the early stages of Giantbomb.

@Tophat666: Whoah, Tophat? I totally didn't realize you were the same Tophat from Noobtoob. I'm at best an occasional lurker over there (I think I have all of five posts), but I'm inclined to agree they're some of the nicest people on the net. I just wish they were a bit more conscientious of their grammar and spelling, and that those forums were a bit more active. I feel like I did when I found out Lucien used GB too, only that was right after Tobin and Yuzo announced the end of the podcast.

I remember finding Giant Bomb just a couple months before Game of the Year 2009. Some review score or news story was posted on Gamespot that was apparently of extreme distaste to some Giant Bomb user, who basically said he was dissatisfied with Gamespot and preferred Giant Bomb. Being curious, I put in the URL and started reading some reviews. I checked more and more often as the months went by, but didn't start watching QL's regularly until May or June of 2010 and didn't listen to the Bombcast until the start of November. I began the Persona 4 Endurance Run with the Re-Endurance Run earlier this year. Now I don't really sign onto other gaming websites, and I run my own gaming podcast. I guess that's the start of my "You Have Excellent Taste. Now Make Something" credo set by Dave. I should probably write more, though.
