Best of E3 2016

The games that most got my attention in a positive way at E3 2016. Not necessarily the games that I realistically think I'll enjoy most, but the ones that most made me sit up and take notice with curiosity/excitement.

Examples of games that didn't make the cut for this list because they were not attention-grabbing enough (e.g. by looking overly familiar), despite likely being games that I'll enjoy playing: Dishonored 2 (looks good, but merely more Dishonored), Shadow Warrior 2 (looks good, but exactly as seen previously), Tyranny (no changes--remains vague and promising),

Examples of games that didn't make this list because they didn't appear or barely appeared (or I just didn't see them) at E3: DX: MD (nothing new seen/heard), FFVII:R (no-show),

  • Prior to E3 2016, I was very excited for this game just for existing. What little gameplay footage I'd seen looking okay, but kind of nondescript. However, the E3 footage, limited though it was, was exactly on point for what I'd want from a Nier sequel, so I'm excited to see my lofty hopes for this game slowly being confirmed. Plenty of unknowns remain, of course, so my excitement is based on a lot of optimism at this point.

  • E3 mainly just kindled my huge existing excitement for this game--no meaningful change up or down. Didn't watch all the footage that came out during E3 (only some, and not too closely--same as with prior footage), but it's looking like Japanese games at their best--full of style, art, and personality. The game looked just a hint more anime than I was quite expecting, which may be a small warning signal, or not, who knows.

  • Announceed at E3, so no pre-existing feelings coming in. Vague footage, but very System Shock/Dead Space looking (which I love). Emphasis was on atmosphere over action, which is a promising starting point. Action can come later, and is better if not the focus of the game's design. Easy to be hyped for a game so vague.

  • A little too weird for me until the end when the 5 floating figures appeared (struck me as a very Kojima/Japanese/Eva touch), then I was on board. No idea if I'll like this thing as a whole in the end, but it's bound to be interesting and I bet it'll at least have parts that I'll like.

  • Haven't played a 3D Zelda since burning out on TP, and have been waiting to see the Zelda formula overhauled, which this is. The freedom of exploration is quite appealing, as I've felt Zelda's exploration has felt too constrained since LttP. One of my big concerns is that the game will be too easy, like other modern Zeldas, so we'll see if that's the case. I also like that the game can be completed while missing major story points--hope that's indicative of more of the game's design (love missable stuff because it makes what you do find more precious).

  • Was already low-hype optimistic for this to be a solid game, but all indications at E3 were positive reinforcement of that. Sounds like a AAA game that's taking some creative risks, an intriguing rarity.

  • Announced at E3. From makers of Limbo and looks the part. I liked, but didn't love Limbo, as some seemed to. This looks stylish though, as Limbo did. I'm certainly curious to check out a good-quality stylish and atmosphereic puzzle game, if this game can live up to that billing.

  • Right off the bat I'm intrigued to see the next RE game, since I have enjoyed previous ones, though decliningly so. One one hand I find the hard turn toward first-person horror a striking change in direction, but on the other I don't like that stuff much and talk of the game taking heavy inspiration from RE1 (which never caught my interest for being horror+adventure game instead of action), make me wary that I'll actually enjoy playing it. I understand that this demo is unrepresentatively horror-oriented, so maybe the full game will have balance of horror, puzzles, and action that I'll like... curious to find out.

  • Announced at E3. Basically looks like Portal. Seems like it'll have some kind of storytelling, maybe vague. Had a decent clean and colorful look, but not overly so. What really and surprisingly got my attention was the unrelenting speed exhibited in the demo video. Maybe it was merely reminding me of the pre-release Portal trailer that got me super hyped for Portal, but somehow the idea of a fast first-person puzzle game totally appeals to me. Realistically, it probably won't be that fast, but we'll see.

  • Still hard to imagine that I would actually like to play this game (sequel to GoW and a western AAA action game), but the lightly Dark Souls-y combat, the openish levels, and the dysfunctional fatherhood story angle are plenty to make me intrigued by this hard turn in a franchise that I had never gaven a damn about before.

  • Announced at E3. Stylish with a disturbing and original story premise. I'm curious to see what this game does with it. Nothing is known about the gameplay except that the levels are procedurally generated, which I'm maximally skeptical of in such a strong narratively driven game. Game is also low budget with impressive story sequences, which makes me expect the gameplay to be an afterthought (i.e. garbage). I suspect this thing would be better realized as non-interactive media, like a short movie or something.
