I feel ya on this Sparky. Fall is a super rough time for me gaming wise every year. My familial, social and work responsibilities just cut my gaming time by 75%.

And on top of all that a zillion lengthy AAA big releases always come out now that I invariably want, and in most cases finish before GotY time so I can listen without fear of spoilers and such.

That's why I tend to try this in January, you got the New Year's resolution angle plus if you are like me you have this stack of games you acquire from Holiday sales and such staring you in the face.

Yeah I get where you are coming from on this.

I actually mainly was attracted by the old social functions (cheevo tracking, quests what have you), but Giant Bomb content has the right mix of informative professionalism and off the cuff laid back havin a good time humor for my tastes.

That being said I don't blame the youtube set for doing what they do, if you wanna make it there you gotta ask for the subscribe, meme it up, yell a bunch and use jump cuts etc. Pewdiepie and Markiplier and such aren't fools, they just play the fool for views. I suspect it's a generational difference in preference in content too.

Whoa whoa whoa

Better than FFVI? Sparky man I think you need to play a bit more of DQV before locking it up.

Don't get me wrong I love DQV. In fact I'm willing to go most of the way there with you

  • Is DQV criminally under rated? Absolutely.
  • One of the best SNES RPGS? definitely. (I personally put it third behind FFVI and ChronoTrigger)
  • One of the best RPGs of all time? It belongs in the discussion.
  • The best DQ game? It's close, but I still prefer Viii myself. Might feel differently if I had played V on SNES instead of years later on DS.

But Better than Vi? I don't see quite see it. Mechanically it didn't strike me as varied or compelling as Vi although there is a system I don't think you've seen yet that I did really enjoy, the art style is comparable possibly better than FFVi, The Music while good just isn't on the same tier as FFVi, the characters as a whole aren't as compelling as FFVi's although there are some like the Hero's father who have greater impact than any of Vi's and I think the story is a bit of a wash given their different scopes imo.

Glad you are having fun with it and MGSV man! Both are A+ stuff.

MGSV is a helluva game, never thought I'd get this far back into Metal Gear. Metal Gear feels good to play now! Who would ever thought that would happen?

Nice @dankempster! you are off to a super start man!

I always like starting the month off with a few wins like you did, it makes it easier to savor some time and into a big game without feeling guilty about it.

This was easily my favorite episode you guys have put out. Very cool stuff. I'm pretty amazed the polygons of the world haven't really talked to her (as far as I can tell). Kudos to you guys for a great get and a great way to cover DOTA 2 in your format.

Timely too, Kinda ties right into that new VR project about Street Harassment

Maybe tech is going to give society the means to teach us men folk a bit more empathy.

I know you guys were real anxious to share your experiences, but I do wish you had let Elise talk about the results of her study a little bit more before launching into what you experienced. Or Better yet have let her ask you guys about it, you know let her drive the discussion a bit since she was the expert in this case. In any event the whole thing was fascinating and she was a great guest.

Great episode!

@slag: I'm pretty sure that at least 90% of the backlog was picked up for sale so at least that's something I guess...

I think it really is actually. While having spent on money things you never end up using isn't good, Does it really matter if you spend $60 on one game and enjoy it or if you spend $60 on 5 games and only enjoy one of those? Either way you spent the same amount of money and possibly had similar amounts of entertainment.

Thanks for playing LA Cops Sparky so I don't have to.

I feel you on Divekick, I watch EVO and maybe a few tournaments and that things is way too inside baseball for me to appreciate. I think DK didn't click with me for a couple other reasons as well, one I didn't dig the art style much and two I didn't feel like it controlled all that well. I don't know exactly what I wanted DK to do exactly, but whatever I wanted it didn't do it. I actually think simplified control games are probably really really hard to get right.

There's a real art to getting the controls and physics right in a game, and it's easy to overlook just how right some companies (Nintendo in particular) get it because they make it seem so easy.

And then of course the online community didn't seem to last long.

It's alright for what it is, but I never really got on that train.

I wouldn't beat yourself up too badly. Bundles do this to everybody

One thing to consider when analyzing a backlog is how much you paid for a game. If it's a throw in game from some bundle, I don't think it should really carry the same weight in your backlog as say some game you maybe dropped 60 bucks on.

man GB ate my comment again.

Just wanted to say I think this is a solid approach @dankempster! I like the rotating small and big games idea. You need those easy (and by easy I really mean short) wins to keep your spirits high and keep you going. And if you are lucky you may be able to do 2 at the same time that way (e.g. when playing a forty game, I'll occasionally take a couple days off mid way through to pound out a short adventure game).

I'm flattered you took my suggestion to play Brothers first! I hope you enjoy it!

How the hell do Dan and Jeff not know the US women recently won the World Cup? It was only all over the news/papers/internet...

While I'm sure they probably don't keep up on Sports, I think that they have to be playing it up for comedic purposes.

I mean in Vinny's case he has stated several times played High School Football, so he has to know more about the game than he lets on in Madden Quick Looks.

It seems like the GB Sports team combos usually take the one knowledgeable dude (Alex, Jeff if it's Baseball, Danny for European stuff, Drew for Golf) /one totally oblivious goofball (Vinny, Dan) route. Which is fine by me.
