CPT Update 11/12/18

North America East Two [Ranking Event]

This weekend was Punk’s weekend. There’s no way around it. He obliterated everyone he fought, with the exception of NuckleDu and Brian_F (I’d like to see how this set went). At the beginning of Top 8, he chose Chun-Li against The Cool Kid93’s Abigail. The Cool Kid would only win one round during the entire FT3 set. In Punk’s match with CJ Truth he went back to his tried and true Karin, only giving up 1 game and 1 round to the Cammy player. Now facing Nephew, Punk chose to engage in a Kolin mirror match (I had no idea Punk had a Kolin). Nephew did about as well as CJ Truth did. In Loser’s Final, Punk fought iDom and completely dominated the first 2 games, getting a perfect round in the 2nd game. iDom looked like he was gonna make a comeback when he won game 3, but Punk shut him down and took the set to arrive in the Grand Final.

The two sets of Grand Finals impressed me a lot, Punk showed off his adaptation best against NuckleDu. Punk ended up beating all three of NuckleDu’s main characters. Both competitors look on top of their game and ready to compete in the culmination of the CPT season, Capcom Cup, in about a little over a month’s time. I can’t wait to see it.

Besides running into Punk, both Nephew and iDom had impressive showings. Nephew destroyed one of the last Zangiefs, mhike2stronk, with some truly disgusting mixups along with some solid play. The Kolin player also had a 3-0 victory against Brian_F, each game in that set being competitive. iDom also had a strong victory against Brian_F (3-1) and in Winner’s Final had a very close set with NuckleDu. At one point, iDom had the match advantage at 2-1, but NuckleDu never gave him another round after that point.

I want to also make a quick shoutout to mhike2stronk. He may not have had the best showing in this Top8, but he is really fun to watch and an all-around great guy by all accounts. I was sad to see him go down the way he did and I hope to see more from him in the CPT 2019 season. Here’s to some Zangief buffs, but not too many. I have too much trouble with that MU as it is.

North America Leaderboard Top 8

This weekend didn’t change up much about the leaderboard, no one new got on or off. Just Punk and iDom overtaking Toi (who couldn’t compete in this tournament being considered on the West). Smug didn’t compete in the online tournament, opting to accept Red Bull’s invitation to their Kumite event, which no one could blame him for doing. Now, there’s only one more event to get more Ranking points for the NA region.

Global Leaderboard Top 26 + Auto-Qualifiers

Again, this weekend didn’t change much. NuckleDu went up one rank. Punk, while still not guaranteed, made it much more likely that he’s going to be in Capcom Cup. He’s only a little over 100 points under the alleged safe zone (according to @OneFrameLink) and, given this weekend’s performance, I’d say he’s the favorite to win North America Regional Finals. It hasn’t been a good year for favorites when it comes to the regional finals. I wonder if Punk can break that streak.

Next Weekend’s Events

This is it. The last CPT event before the month long build-up to Capcom Cup. After this weekend, 31 of the spots will be decided barring any unforeseen issues. I’m curious how the whole Infiltration situation will shake out. He hasn’t competed since Evolution in August. I thought that Capcom and Panda Global (his sponsor) both would’ve reached a decision about whether he’ll be playing or whether PG will continue to sponsor the Korean player by now. Hopefully, this is announced soon because removing the 11th ranked player will have some big changes to the matchups that the other competitors need to study. For example, at this moment Justin Wong’s first match would be against Nemo if nothing changed about the leaderboard. But, if they remove Infiltration from the equation, Wong will be facing StormKubo. A different character match up and much different type of opponent. It might end up that players will have to split their focus during preparation to plan for either way this could go.

Below is a chart showing the players who don’t need a 1st place finish to qualify for the NA Regional Finals. Smug only needs to be the highest placing NA competitor (outside of the 7 already above him in the NA Leaderboard) in the open tournament.

With Smug only having 80 points, it’s technically possible for any NA player to show up, take 1st place in the open tournament, and get that 8th seed in the NA Finals over Smug. Because this is the last opportunity to acquire Global Points in the 2018 CPT season, I find that scenario extremely unlikely. Even if the players who are safe (Rank 20 and above) didn’t show up, there are still some killers who could just squeak into Capcom Cup and will more than likely show up for the tournament. I’ll just list off some some non-NA players below Rank 20: Mago, Momochi, Itabashi Zangief, Verloren, Nemo, StormKubo, GamerBee, Brolynho, Akainu, Momi. Yikes! I honestly think that the NA players in the finals will stay the same. Maybe the seeding will change, but that’s about it.

No Caption Provided

Remember how I mentioned that this is the last event to get global points? Well, below is a chart showing what placement these players will need to be guaranteed entry into Capcom Cup. It’s technically possible for people below CJ Truth in rank to get in with a 1st place win, but that would require the Top 26 basically getting no points and a 1st place finish. Pretty unlikely.

No Caption Provided

Well, that’s it for this week. It’s weird to think that this time next week we’ll know mostly what Capcom Cup’s pool of players will look like. I’m really hoping Smug makes it into and wins the regional finals. If NuckleDu or Justin Wong win the regional finals, Toi could get into Capcom Cup or Smug if he places high enough in the open tournament. I’m excited to see who ends up securing the bottom 7 or so spots. See you next week.

CPT Update 11/05/18

Versus Fighting Cup [Premier Event]

First of all, a shoutout to Michael Martin for traveling down to Brazil to help with the English commentary. I'm sure Mad Reis and KidMagia appreaciate the help. While English commentary isn't something I necessarily need to enjoy watch these fights, it takes down a barrier for English speaking viewers who might not tune in otherwise and thus gives the LATAM region more exposure to the rest of the world. It'd be nice if someone would've done this for the earlier LATAM ranking events. I feel like (based off of no data) that the LATAM region gets glossed over by a lot of viewers and that bums me out because they have lots of good players. Players that just don't get as many chances to compete in the CPT. I hope that's something they improve next season, give the LATAM region some more damn premiers. I feel like Game Over should've been one this year. It definitely had the production quality of one.

On to the tournament results, Haitani gets his first CPT 2018 tournament win with his previous best being 3rd at an FV x SEA Major Malaysia. The 700 additional points jumps Haitani up 12 spots making him 13th on the global leaderboard. He is absolutely in Capcom Cup now. Mago has been showing up towards the end of the season and secures himself a 2nd place finish making him 21st on the global leaderboard and more than likely is safe to qualify for Capcom Cup.

Let's talk about Zenith, not only did he make 3rd place in a tournament that had several Japanese invaders (none of which he actually faced haha) in it but he also lost in round 1 of winner's to someone I have never heard/didn't make Top 48. That's one hell of a tournament run. Zenith knocked out Crossover (the LATAM Regional Champ), ChuChu, Brolynho, and HKDASH. Unforunately, short of winning Red Bull Battlegrounds or the LCQ, we won't be seeing Zenith anymore this year.

Doomsnake is doing the lord's work and eliminated two Japanese Abigail mains, Itabashi Zangief and StormKubo. I'm such a big Doomsnake fan and I'm sad that he probably won't get into Capcom Cup this year even though he is at that level of skill. I would love to see him win the LCQ though. He's the best and most committed Vega in the world and I hope he never changes. Very fun player to watch.

Rounding out the rest of Top 8, Itabashi Zangief and HKDASH made 5th place. Itabashi is now in a really good place among the Top 26 with the 130 points he recieved. HKDASH is one of the strongest M. Bison players from LATAM. 5th is a really solid finish. At 431 global points, I find it highly likely that this the end of his CPT 2018 season. StormKubo and Robinho_FGC round it out at 7th place. StormKubo isn't quite in Capcom Cup, but he's so close. He's 40 points away from Nemo who is currently in line to get the auto-qualifying spot for the Asia region. I would be shocked if he (and Nemo) aren't showing up for Red Bull Battlegrounds. Robinho_FGC, I've never heard of you before this tournament and your match with Zenith didn't even get streamed, so I didn't even see you compete. You beat Keoma though, and that's pretty impressive. Maybe next year you'll make a bigger splash.

LATAM Regional Finals

Crossover wins big this weekend and becomes the LATAM Regional Final Winner and gets into Capcom Cup. I honestly was expecting Brolynho to win it all and was really hoping Doomsnake would pull it off. Doomsnake did really well making it to winner's final. He lost that and the loser's final, but he made them real close. Brolyhno seemed really tilted a few times and that definitely affect his play. If Pauloweb beat me like he got beat, I'd be salty too though. I feel like we'll probably see Brolynho at the Red Bull Battlegrounds, he actually has a chance of hitting the Top 26 if he could win that (maybe... MAYBE if he got 2nd). But more than likely the LCQ is the only chance for another LATAM player to make it into Capcom Cup.

Global Leaderboard Top 26 + Auto-Qualifiers

Not a whole lot of movement on the leaderboard after this weekend. The biggest thing is Crossover securing his spot in Capcom Cup by winning the LATAM Regional Finals. Haitani, Mago, and Itabashi Zangief also moved up on the leaderboard. Haitani jumped up 12 ranks and Mago moved up 5. I would say they're both safe to qualify for Capcom Cup. Itabashi moved up to 23rd and is pretty safe as well. Honestly, if he got passed up on the leaderboard he would probably get the auto-qualification spot for the Asia region. But, again, I think he's pretty safe.

I don't see much movement in the top 26 to happen this weekend. Maybe Punk will go up a few spots if he can win this weekend. Maybe someone below Top 26 could set themselves up to get on there by winning NA East Two and finishing high at Red Bull Battlegrounds. Just three more tournaments and the 31 spots for Capcom Cup will be finalized.

The CPT 2018 season is nearly over. NA East Two online event is this Saturday and it's the last ranking event for the NA region (I'm gonna compete in this, hopefully I can win a couple of matches before being eliminated). While there are still some ranking points to grab at the NA Finals the weekend after, the majority of the Top 8 for the NA Finals will be finalized after this event. More than likely, the only people that are in danger are Flash (who can't compete because he's on the West side of the US) and Smug. Smug is currently #8 on the NA Leaderboard with 80 points. Ideally, he needs to get 1st or 2nd. With at least 150 points (that a 2nd place finish would get him), someone from NA would have to win the open tournament, which is highly unlikely, to take his spot because the next lowest position only has 50 points. It'll be interesting to see how this all sets up for the NA Regional Finals, the last event before Capcom Cup.

Next Weekend’s Event(s)

I'm gonna try some to do some miscellaneous posts in the break time between the NA Regional Finals and Capcom Cup. If anyone has any ideas for those, I would love some suggestions. I have a couple of ideas rolling around in my brain, the most obvious one being a fantasy bracket. If you have anyone thoughts please comment below, whether it's about the event or anything I could do to improve the blog.

CPT Update 09/10/2018

Street Grand Battle 2018 [EU Ranking Event]

(Video should start at the GFs, 2:46:30)

First off this weekend was the final EU ranking event. Phenom took his 5th (yikes!) ranking event of 2018, making his lead on the EU Leaderboard even more pronounced. This isn’t shocking in the least and congratulations to Phenom for the win. Let’s talk about Machabo. He lost a very close grand finals set after resetting the bracket. This could have easily been his win. He’s only played in two CPT tournaments (that I’m aware of) this year and is already in the Top 50 of the Global Leaderboard. I’d love to see him attend more events towards the end of the year. Lastly, I want to give a shout out to JeonDDing. This man made Top 8 in this tournament and in the Tekken tournament at the same event. That’s just impressive and he's just a joy to watch compete. His reactions kind of remind me of PRBalrog.

Since this was the last ranking event for Europe, the Top 8 for the EU Regional Finals is pretty much set (you can see this below the tournament results). There will be chance for this Top 8 to change based on the results of the Europe Regional Finals Open Tournament because the Top 8 from that will be awarded Ranking Points (if they’re from the EU) and then the Top 8 (and the seeding) for Regional Final will actually be determined. While highly unlikely, anyone (even someone who has 0 points) from the EU can win the Open Tournament and take Akainu’s spot. Akainu more than likely will keep his spot, but he needs to place higher than any of his EU brethren in the Open Tournament to guarantee his spot, unless none of the make Top 8 in the Open Tournament.

Underneath the Top 8 of the leaderboard is a list of competitors that can take Akainu’s spot with a non-1st place finish in the Open Tournament and what place they would need to do that. Of course, this is all predicated on Akainu placing lower than them in the Open Tournament.

Treta Championship [LATAM Ranking Event]

Keoma? Now, that’s a name I haven’t heard in a long time. He’s spent the entire year making respectable (but not point earning) positions in LATAM ranking tournaments, but he comes away with 3-0 victory over Brolynho in the Grand Finals. That’s a very strong statement against the perennial Brazilian challenger . He’s barely in the running for the LATAM Regional Final now and he’s sitting at 56 on the Global Leaderboard. He's not quite in Capcom Cup yet, but it’s way more possible than it was before this weekend.

Brolynho, while probably not the result he wanted, got 2nd place at the tournament which pushed in back into the Top 26 of the Global Leaderboard. If he wants to keep that positioning, he’ll need to work harder and maybe travel a little more. Then again, there are still 5 more LATAM Ranking Events left, so he can possibly maintain Top 26 without traveling to premiers.

Dreamhack Montreal [Premier Event]

Justin Wong’s first premier event win ever. Just sit on that for a bit. Justin and NuckleDu first met in Winner’s Finals. Du shocked everyone by picking Juri, of all characters, to combat Justin’s Menat. That did not go so well for NuckleDu and he was knocked into Loser’s Finals to face 2018 EVO Champion, Problem X. Du had a pretty clear victory of Problem with a 3-1 and made it back to Justin Wong to make an all American (been a long time) Grand Finals. Du first went with Cammy and the gameplan seemed to be to overwhelm Justin with aggression. This strategy went will at first with NuckleDu resetting the bracket in a 3-1 set. In the final set, Justin adjusted and got a 2-1 lead over his opponent. NuckleDu then switched to R. Mika, assumingly to change up his attack but retain the aggression. This strategy paid off and he tied up the set at 2-2. Justin countered by returning to his first main, Karin Kanzuki. Karin has an invincible reversal and a V Reversal that hits instead of teleports (Menat’s V Reversal had been punished a lot by Du’s R. Mika in the last game). In my opinion, these tools were instrumental in Justin Wong taking the final game in the set to win the tournament. You can see that in the first round of the final game, Justin winning that round with Karin's EX reversal during a scramble. I set the video to start at the end of this round if you wanted see that.

Mago got 5th at Dreamhack and got himself back in the Top 26 of the Global Leaderboard. CJ Truth made 7th place after getting 2nd to Caba at First Attack last weekend. While still lacking points, I hope he keeps making it out to events. Punk is starting to look like his old self. I hope he continues to not enter other games and focus on SFV. He does really well when he’s focused on the one game. Nephew and Smug have both been doing some work with G this weekend and last as well. It was nice to see such a strong showing from the American FGC this weekend (yes, I’m biased). A final shoutout to Chi-Rithy, the sole Canadian in Top 16 who took out Oil King, the winner of last weekend’s premier event, to get there.
