Florianopolis Brazil!

This is where i'll be going for 2 years.  I'll be there on a mission for my church, speaking Portugese, doing service work, and preaching. I am SOOOO excited.  People at this site probably don't care that much, but this is something that really matters to me, so I though i should include it in this blog.

This will be the 4th foreign country i've been to (if you count canada as foreign to the U.S. lol), the others being China (I was part of the olympic band), Guatamala (for more sercive work), and Canada (to go fishing haha)

Anyway, I leave on August 25th, and before i go, maybe you guys could help me prepare a little!
Thanks!

Staff member showdown!

So who do you guys think is the most awesome staff member?
Is it Brad? Ryan? Vinny? Or is it Jeff?
This week is kind of pointless for blogging, with E3 going on and everything, so i'll have something more substantial later.

Anyway, Who do you think would win in a fight? Who's the coolest?
Personally i'm going with Brad. He seems like the kind of guy you could just sit down and have a drink with, you know?

Im not sure about the new zelda.....

Granted i haven't played the game yet, so i can't make a completely informed decision, however what i do know is that:

a) i don't like the vidual art style. i feel like its really a step backwards for the franchise. i didn't like the art style of the DS games or wind waker very much either. maybe it was the weird cat eyes that bugged me, but whatever. I guess what i'd prefer is for them to stay with the somewhat darker themes found in majoras mask, ocarina of time, and twilight princess.

b) A beetle? seriously? you cuoldn't get more creative with the items? And, even if you weren't creative with the items, you could still go back to old zelda mainstays like the hook/clawshot, or go back to its roots and resurect some of the "a link to the past" items.

c) In recent times, it really seems like the zelda team has been dumbing down the puzzles.  You just need to play spirit tracks or phantom hourglass to know what i mean.  Even twilightprincess felt like it was a step down from the standard.  Bring back the really challenging zelda games please! A fine exmple of a "modern" zelda that was still hard, is Majora's Mask.

I've been wrong before, but i hope that nintendo puts as much effort into Skyward sword as they do into games like super mario galaxy.....

E3 blows my mind

Its true. Every E3, my mind gets blown. Think about the picture Jeff uses when he gives a perfect 5/5 review, i.e. http://www.giantbomb.com/picross-3d/61-23984/reviews/
Anyway, i feel like i'm a geek for technology, and when something like Kinect, or nintendo 3DS is shown, that is what happens to my brain. people scoff at kinect, but first i thinkk they should ask themselvesif they're smart enough to build something like that.
Anyway, E3 is a blast for me, and 'm excited to see where the rest of the show goes!

Shogun 2 Total War!

Maybe some of you guys are already aware of this, but i just found out the news a few days ago.  The team behind all the awesome total wars titles, like medivial, rome and empire, is returning to feudal japan for their next title
Here's a link for the proof:
http://www.totalwar.com/shogun2
And here's a youtube video of the trailer:

I don't know about you guys, but I couldn't have asked for a better historical setting for the newst total war game (except maybe a warring states pre-unification china, as is 1st century A.D. before the Qin Dynasty)
Edit:just realzed this has already been posted by a staff, but what ever

Remember remember, the fifth of november

of the gun powder treason and plot.
i see no reason why the gunpowder treason
should ever be forgot

Geez i love v for vendetta. Actually i suppose it would be more accurate to say that i love the writting of Alan Moore, but most people still think that Watchmen  and V were just stand alone movies.  One thing that i loved about them was the Aaboslute OVERSATURATION of symbolism and metaphors in both of the stories and images. i really don't know what i'm getting at here, besides rejoicing in the awesomeness of Alan moore. Who's with me?

Dorf Fortress

Recently (the last 2 days) i started playing this game called dwarf fortress. Basically its a city/fortress managment game although there is a heck of alot more to it than that.  (BTW i posted a video in one of my earlier blogs,  where the y makes a comment on the gameplay in dwarf fortress. An interesting video as well)

All i have to say about the game so far is....

WHAT

I can see the potentially fun experience that a person can have while playing it, as evidenced by the HILARIOUS stories from the game you can find on the internet, but the level of the learning curve is almost beyond anyone without an IQ abvoe 120, IMO.

However, i'm giving a shot at it, and if i can eventually GET it, then you can expect to be hearing about it from me in the future. Wish me luck!

Kung Fu Fighting!

This is what i want to see done well in a game! Good kung fu fighting! I just saw the movie "Hero" by jet Li (absolutely amazing, and cinematicly a treat to watch, in addition to being very moving) and I also watched Drunken master again recently (a really old jackie chan movie. and by old, i mean the movie is old, and this was jackie's breakout leading role) and it reviltalized my love of chinese martial arts.

Did anyone else play Jade Empire? Although the combat was fairly simplistic, it allowed you to flow between various at least a dozen different combat styles, like iron palm style, or viper style, ect. And, because it was made by Bioware, it had a high degree of polish, and is one of the more overlooked of Bioware's franchises. I really hope they do a sequel to it.

Anyway, i guess where i'm going with this is that i want to see a kung fu game (perhaps in the vein of jade empire, but perhaps not) with the complexity and variety that you can see in films.
Now the problem with this is that martial arts take years of study and discipline to master, and to include all the possibilities in a single game would be.... daunting to say the least. However, i want to know what YOU think.  Comment your opinions below

linearity in games

So my friend in the dorms and i have been having this friendly debate about lineaity in games. He thinks that there in no such thing as linearity in games, becuase they exist for us to play them, therefor they have a point, and therefor they are linear.  I disagree with his reasoning because i  hold that its not the purpose of the game that makes it linear or nonlinear, but the gameplay or any moment of nonlinearity you can find in it.

Recently, he sent me a link about nonlinearity in games, and proceeded to renew our debate. I'll post a sampling here:

and here is our folling debate (btw my friends name is alex)
Me: I agree with him totally! But what i think our....debate was about, was whether there was non-linearity in games, and his GTA3 example prooves MY point :)

Alex-one game proves your point? not even one game, one moment in one game. im pretty sure that proves my point. that non-linearity doesnt exist

Me-If it exists in one moment in one game, not to mention those other 2 games, (dwarf fortress, and whatevertheotheronewascall ed) then it disproves your claim that there is no such thing as linearity. Think about a "law" in physics. if there was ONE instance of gravity not behaving to the laws percrbed to it, it would disprove the "law". the law has to work in EVERY situation

Alex - It does work though. you finish these games. there is an underlying goal that you work to. it doesnt matter that there are multiple ways to finish the game, the fact that you play it for a purpose makes it have a linear theme. sure there are non-linear moments, but that doesnt change the fact that you play them to finish them.

I think alex was being a little narrow minded on the subject, but what do you think? Am i right or is he? Or is there something we both haven't considered?
