Oh my god such sad news. The giant bomb editors are probably the only people that I haven't actually met but I consider close friends. You will be sorely missed Ryan. My thoughts and heart go to your friends and family.

What if there was an iPhone / iPad app that let you do all the menu based activities in Skyrim. You would upload your save file to a server and the app would pull the data. You would then do things like equipping armor or smithing through the app. Depending on the nature of the activity, you can have it take effect immediately after loading your save on the console, or queued up until you reach the right place. For example if you equip some armor, your character would be wearing it upon loading the save file, but if you crafted a new sword, you would have to go to a forge and the game would tell you that you have a sword queued up and you would just need to confirm to get your sword. This way  you could still have a Skyrim experience while attending a boring family reunion, and you could maximize your console time exploring, fighting or moving the story along. Things you could do through the app: equipping items, marking items as favorites, smithing, enchanting, using alchemy, trading with any merchant you've previously met, examining the map, fast traveling, examining skill trees, assigning pending perks, reading any book in your inventory, admiring a 3D model of your character, browsing the achievement list, etc. I hope you are now as sad as I am that this doesn't exist.

I finished the game with every single item according to my memory, but the item subscreen still has two empty slots. I looked at a guide and I have every item listed. I think that's the way it's supposed to be, but it seems a bit weird. Can anyone confirm if you are left with two empty slots in the end?

This happens in every 3D game. Things that are too close to the camera make your eyes cross. They've also never looked pretty in 2D. Anyways there's a neat trick you can do when you glitch the camera to be inside a wall or character and your eyes cross, try closing just one eye, then the other; one eye gets the glitched image, the other doesn't.

The new markings that lead the way to the switches are pretty useful. Back in the day you had to memorize the location of each one, not impossible, but annoying. Also I noticed that when you raise the level of the water inside the central tower, and a hole in the ground is revealed because a floating platform is raised, the camera focuses on the hole. I guess this wasn't in the original, was it? I thought it would be pretty easy to miss if the camera didn't point it out.

There's absolutely no reason to play the N64 version if you have this. I can't think of a single advantage that version has over this one.

While yes, you could get this game on another system, this version is far superior. Look for some comparative shots of the graphics, and you will see how much better they are this time around. The map and item managing in the second screen make pausing the game less frequent, and a lot quicker as it is a lot easier to navigate through menus now. On top of that you get a very nice use of the 3D effect. Motion aiming makes things like shooting galleries not only easier, but more organic. You can even look around without going to first person by Z-targeting (or L-targeting) while physically moving the system around. And, did you mention you didn't play the original? I almost envy you for that. Other games great games are on their way, plus the bundled software and the eShop can provide a little extra play time (did you play the original Link's Awakening? I didn't so I just bought it and its effing great). I would absolutely say go for it.

I like playing in 3D because, well, it is a 3DS after all, and this game makes fantastic use of it. But yesterday I turned the 3D off to get a little bit more battery life and I was pretty impressed with the 2D mode. Aside from the antialiasing that has already been discussed, the screen with 3D turned on shines in a weird way and looks kind of "glassy" you have to see it for yourself to understand it, it is not noticeable until you turn the 3D off and the screen looks like a normal screen. It's like when you don't notice the annoying noise of an air conditioner until it turns off.
