Best of 2011

  • There were few games this year that were as polarizing as Catherine. But I'm proud to find myself on the side that thinks this is one of the most unique games I have ever played. Add to that an interesting story that deals with morality and relationships in some really cool ways. And tie it all up with incredible music and a fantastic art style, and you have a game that is, in fact, a game you're not likely to see repeated.

  • I went into this game with a lot of anticipation and a little bit of concern. Greg Kasavin ( a part of Supergiant Games ) is my gaming hero. So it was great to finally sit down and play Bastion, and find a game that has so much character and nuance, and in a downloadable game no less! In fact, the action in this game, too me, is the best that 2011 had to offer. And don't forget the amazing art and music ( the latter of which has been winning awards left and right.) So, thank you Supergiant Games, for making one of this years finest games!

  • It's easy to look at Arkham City and say "More of the same." And that's because, well, it is. But you'd be hard-pressed to find any other third-person action game that offers the perfect balance of combat, detective work and collectible hunting that Arkham City has. I mean, c'mon, IT'S EFFIN BATMAN!

  • As a pretty casual fan of fighting games, it came as a surprise when I realized just how much I enjoyed playing the latest Mortal Kombat. It's the combination of a more streamlined fighting system, and a well paced and ( dare I say ) interesting story, that comes together to make this, quite possibly, the greatest fighting game I've played since Street Fighter II.

  • Yes, it's frustrating, and yes, it does have it's technical issues. But that doesn't stop Dark Souls from being an amazing game. Dark Souls does something that few games do nowadays, it actually requires skill to play! That, and the fact that it happens to be a great game in almost every way. Makes Dark Souls one of 2011's best games.

  • Infamous was a fantastic game, in fact, it was the first game I really sat down and played on my PS3. The fact that Infamous 2 managed to be a better game then the original, is reason enough to earn a spot on this list. It also just so happens to be an immensely satisfying game filled with collectibles and side quests that are worth going after. Even if the story could have been a little better.

  • When's the last time you've spent dozens of hours on a game... doing absolutely nothing? Terraria is the kind of game that lets you just... play, without any real goal or purpose. Just sit back, and dig, dig, dig.

  • A trilogy that actually has some real closure? Crazy, I know. But that's exactly what Gears of War 3 offers. It also has one of the best single player campaigns to come out of a shooter in years. Oh, and the multiplayer is pretty cool too.

  • Even with a few nagging issues, and an ending that could have been handled a lot better. Dragon Age II still provides a satisfying and action-packed experience, that, to me; is one of 2011's best.
