Sparky's Update - E3 Predictions

Heya folks! This is lifted directly from a FB conversation with friends about E3. Since I'm lazy and don't want to rewrite anything ever again after this week, I've just gone ahead and copied it verbatim. No, "verbatim" isn't slang for a sexual act involving a donkey, a banana, and a monkey wrench. It means... oh, forget it.

Don't let me catch a bazillionty of these posted to the forums. Not because I'll lock them down or anything, but because it was so obviously my idea first, because no one in the history of blogging has ever come up with E3 predictions, ever.

Here you go:

Here's my list of predictions of big games to be announced at E3. Some of these are educated guesses, some are wildly speculative, all are hopeful and at least semi-realistic (obviously we're not getting Full Throttle 2 or Shenmue 3, et cetera).

Fallout 4 - Makes perfect sense to announce this now or later this year, as Bethesda just released Elder Scrolls Online. Logic dictates that they wouldn't release three ES games in a row after Skyrim and ESO, so their next announcement will be a major new IP, Fallout 4, or nothing at all. They do still have Wolfenstein in the works as well, so no new announcements from isn't a stretch.

Just Cause 3 - This one's a bit questionable as to its actual announcement date, but we know it's coming, so why not have a teaser at E3? The only real question is if they'd split their development team from the Mad Max game the developer is working on. My guess is we'll see Mad Max get released first, with Just Cause 3 seeing a fall of 2015 release. Therefore, we still might not see an announcement until later this year or beyond.

Saints Row 5 - Another no brainer, but it's questionable when we'll actually see an announcement, as it's unlikely we'll see another Saints Row game this year. Fingers crossed that they take their time with this one and develop it solely for next gen consoles.

Tomb Raider 2 - This is probably the most likely of all the announcements, save for Forza Horizon 2. Square took some losses on the original, but with the positive reviews and huge numbers of sales, it's inevitable. Inebbbitttaabbble!

Forza Horizon 2 - Even Horizonerary - This is the most "no duh" game on this list, as the Forza games are basically printed money for Microsoft at this point. I'm guessing they'll ditch Colorado for somewhere probably more tropical and varied, but they could go pretty much anywhere with the series.

A new turn-based console RPG from Square - Partly wishful thinking on my part, but given their recent acknowledgment that the sales of Bravely Default made them rethink their stance on classic turn-based RPGs, I'm guessing Square will announce a game for XBL and PSN that will be a test of sorts for player response. Normally I'd say this would be announced at the Tokyo Game Show, but Square's been bringing some of their biggest stuff to E3, and with the focus on PSN and XBL games, I'd be surprised if they didn't have something in the works.

A sequel to Deus Ex: Human Revolution - I have no reason to think this is actually happening. I just think it's a great idea and one of those "wild card" guesses I usually get wron

I'm on board with you that all of these are probably games that will be released, but I feel like this E3 might be a bit too early for a few of them. Just Cause 3, for the reason you state, seems like it probably won't be there. Recent comments from Bethesda also make it sound like Fallout 4 might be pretty far off (although that might not preclude the possibility of a teaser trailer).

@chaser324: Yup, that list is pretty much 99% wishful thinking, besides Tomb Raider 2, which I really do think will be announced at E3, and Forza Horizon, which seems like a no-brainer for MS.

@demoskinos: I'm slapping my forehead. Not because of Half-Life 3, but it would be about time for Valve to announce something for consoles, wouldn't it?

I feel like Fallout 4 is a safe bet. It's been rumored for long enough. I am also going to predict that Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem will either be revealed here in full force or quietly confirmed as canceled. Maybe a new Zelda game too. Nintendo needs something big to show to remind people that they occasionally still exist.

Oh, and Microsoft will show off Halo 5, unless that Halo 2 anniversary edition thing turns out to be true.

@arbitrarywater: My crazy Nintendo prediction is a 2D Metroid game for the 3DS. I'm not sure what all they'll bring this year, but I've gotta imagine they'll bluster through their conference all but pretending the Wii U doesn't exist and that the 3DS has some new peripheral gizmo thing that will work with precisely one game.

Man, I could really go for a Fallout 4 right about now. I've spent the last week or so back in Skyrim, rolling a new stealthy character and going through the Thieves Guild quests, and man, that game is awesome. Give me a brand new post-apocalyptic adventure in that engine with all the extra prettiness the new generation of hardware can inject into it, and I might actually bite the bullet and buy a PS4 or Xbox One just to play it.

As for throwing in my own prediction, I'm hoping we see a substantial chunk of gameplay for Final Fantasy XV. I enjoyed FFXIII and XIII-2 when I played them, but feel pretty ambivalent about them in retrospect, and I'm still yet to check out Lightning Returns. I wouldn't say I'm pinning all of my hopes on it, but I would like to see an FFXV trailer that gets me excited for the series again.

@dankempster: Yeah, I'm always down for seeing what Square's up to. I might not always like their games, but XV sure looked purdy last year and I'm stoked to see more of it.

At this point, I think the games that would get me to buy a new console would be a Fallout, single player ES, Far Cry 4, and Just Cause 3. I'm sure this will be the E3 to make me drool over the new consoles.

Pretty reasonable list. I'd also add Far Cry 4 which will be my most anticipated game in a long time.

@sparky_buzzsaw: Like the new avatar Sparky!

What in your mind do you think Capcom is going to announce? That to me is the biggest mystery in the air at the moment. I can not figure what their strategy for this gen is. As far as I know they have very little announced projects in the pipeline compared to what we are used to seeing from them. I'm not sure even what they are really doing with Deep Down.

I figure they will have something predictable like maybe RE7 exclusive to Xbox One, but I feel like they have something crazy up their sleeves too. Maybe something out of left field like a Dino Crisis reboot.

Also I noticed you had a bunch of reasonable guesses up there. Do you have any major surprise predictions?

Mine is Sony will finally announce Last Guardian, Epic will unveil Fortress, Nintendo will announce a wearable peripheral to go along with the WiiU that measures heartrate (and a new IP similar to Brain Age but for fitness)l and that Blizzard will shed some light on the new direction of Titan.

Plus Sony will showcase Playstation Now and bring the Vita TV to the US.
