Thanks everyone for your kind replies!
@joystick_hero: @dray2k: As far as my feelings for NieR, well, firstly the general playing of the game was largely unappealing to me. Just x copy all the complaints people have made about the combat, the environments, the traversal etc etc. Secondly, as a game that wanted to tackle these very serious themes I just couldn't handle how casually it cast aside its protagonists time after time. The androids exist as data, and data is never really "transferred" from a device to another device. It is only ever copied. So even an act as simple as fast travel suddenly has very significant complications if you think of games like Soma. Without the game in any way reconciling that disconnect for me or even addressing it, I simply wasn't able to take any of the rest of its exploration of what it means to be human etc seriously.
@hippie_genocide: Yeah, it just became tiring when every time Harada smack-talked SFV all the Capcom-haters took the opportunity to go in on the game again. It got real tiresome.
@dray2k: Thanks for the kind words! Doki Doki didn't hit with me because of the ways it handled mental illness. At first I thought they were going to deconstruct these anime tropes and tackle issues of mental illness with gravity and respect, and a lot of Sayuri's writing near the end of the first act seemed to be headed that way. When the game made the turn into horror it was doubly disappointing, not only because it wasn't what I had hoped it would be, but because it was just another example of media exploiting mental illness as a plot device just to shock the audience. From my point of view it's tired and gross.
As far as Ryder being a torchbearer, I don't really remember her being regarded in that way. For starters, the Andromeda Initiative left the Milky Way Galaxy after the events of Mass Effect 2. As I mentioned in my write-up, Shepard was always a shadow operative, and a majority of the things she did never became known outside of the select few. It's been a while but IIRC for the majority of the second game, she spent a majority of her time working for Cerberus and trying to convince everyone the Reapers were still a threat. Basically when the Arks launched from the Milky Way Galaxy, most people's awareness of Shepard was that she was somehow tied to saving the Citadel and probably dead. Andromeda has plenty of callbacks to ME1 and 2, but I honestly can't remember if the game references Shepard directly at all.
@mocbucket62: Right now I'm playing mostly MH/Strange, although if I had to be honest I feel like my Thanos/Strange team is stronger. I also have been messing with Venom and Haggar a lot.
@acura_max: The bonus episode isn't out yet. I don't know if there's a price difference but I do know you can just buy the deluxe upgrade separate from the game so you could always buy episodes 1-3 then wait tohear the reception for Farewell before buying the Deluxe upgrade. That said, the three outfits in the deluxe upgrade are very good.
