My experience with the game was such that I requested a refund (and got it). It very clearly still needs a ton of work. I can't remember the last PC game I had such a poor experience with. As others have already said, maybe in the future after the game has received plenty of TLC it will be worth it but it very clearly isn't at that point right now for me.
Unless this day one patch drastically changes the core gameplay, I don't think I'll be picking this game up. I watched Twitch streams of the retail version and it was pretty uninspiring. Before anyone says anything about it, I've already read the post about what that day one patch is supposed to do/include. I want to see it in action though and see if it makes any discernible difference to what looked like an otherwise bland gameplay loop.
I remember reading that as you get deeper, creatures will start to look far more alien. So I'm curious where they go with it.
But anyway, I don't think they misrepresented how this procedural stuff would work.
The guy that got a leaked copy and was posting on Reddit said that wasn't true. He said the only discernible difference he found as he got closer to the center of the galaxy was that the weapon crates got better. It also seems like kind of a strange thing to try to quantify anyway. How would you even define one thing as more weird than another?
I tried playing it. I got the "quadrillionaire" bug twice and deleted and reinstalled it as many times to get it working again. Finally I just stopped even trying. For those who don't know that bug basically displays your title at the top as "quadrillionaire" after you've been away and returned even if you haven't earned the title. Tapping earns no money, abilities don't work, and the game eventually just becomes unresponsive. So, for anyone that still wants to give the game a try I would highly advise against any in-app purchases because you could very well lose them.
I'm sure it does need to hit free to play status sooner rather than later if they want to maintain a player base. I participated in the beta and from what I played during that time I severely disliked the single player aspect of the game and the multiplayer aspect felt like a "serviceable" moba/tower defense hybrid. That was probably the most damning thing about it to me. If someone were to ask me to describe the game, the multiplayer in particular, I would say it was average at best ... a totally mediocre experience. It did absolutely nothing to stand out (in a good way) for me. One of the more unique parts of the game is the Borderlands humor, and that was kind of grating to be completely honest.
I tried to go back to Black and White 2 recently but it turns out that game has some serious disagreements with modern hardware and/or Windows 10. Feels bad. Nostalgia trip denied.
No, it's not too late. This isn't a game where you will be left behind. New people are starting all the time and you'll get matched up with people appropriate for you once the hidden mmr calculates for quick play. Same thing goes for competitive.
