The last couple of Firaxis games I played were really janky. I was kinda hoping for this to be better since they sort of blamed the console port for a lot of the last Xcom's issues..
This film has some serious issues. It has its characters talk about their motivations and rarely shows them. It tries to characterize them through dialogue and sometimes monologue and most of the time that falls completely flat on its face.
Seriously, the problem with Kylo Ren isn't his face or his reveal or some of his angst, it's the way they choose to characterize him. He literally has two scenes (relatively close to each other in the film) where he states outright "I'm torn between the light and the dark side." That is just bad storytelling. He even states his condition out loud a third time during the showdown inside the base.
Why the hell would they do this? Despite any grand ambition this story might have had, it's pretty clear to see that it was re-written to death.
Show, don't tell. Did JJ. Abrams forget about this freaking rule??
Kylo Ren's scene with Rey could have been so much more powerful- and the actors are clearly capable.. why the hell state this stuff outright?!
Oh, but they also feel the need to tell you "Poe Dameron is the best damn pilot around" about 30 times, in case you forgot who was flying that black X-Wing. Holy shit, they must think people are completely stupid. They squander so much potential with those new characters, it's not even funny.
The only saving grace is that these young actors all seem capable of so much more. Let's hope they get to do it.
And for the love of god, get rid of those stupid CG 'enhanced' faces. The main bad guy looks so comically bad, it's.. not even funny anymore. You'd think that so much money, so many rewrites, writers and one of the most capable directors around would get you more than an extremely average movie.
What if I don't need yet another Xbone Controller or those games? Sorry, the EU price seems straight out of the 80s or 90s.. Gettin' shafted like the good old days.
He's absolutely right about Ground Zeroes. The bases in TPP were a lot simpler by comparison. Well, it sure looks like they cut the third act out of that game, so I guess it makes sense.
Bummer about all the Fallout-talk. While I agree that the game has way too many performance issues and some stupid-ass bugs, I think you are being way too harsh.
Jeff seemed really down on the game and they all talked about it like.. I don't know are they playing a different game than me? So Jeff has found what, like two in game notes that were not story related, one of them being the super mutant orders? How does he play this game?? I had my freaking inventory full of notes and holotapes even before setting foot into the city, ten hours in.
Some of their criticisms are absolutely valid, some of it seems like it's completely out of thin air. If you don't want to deal with the skills/unlocking/inventory limits then that doesn't mean others won't like that stuff. Honestly it seems like they all have so little time to even play games anymore, that a game like Fallout or The Witcher seems like a giant hassle to them.
That's sad.
In all the Fallout 4 talk all over the internet, no review that I've seen even mentions the bigger issues with the game, aside from performance and bugs.
One: They kicked the skills out! There are no skill checks anymore, except for unlocking and persuasion.
Two: The combat system seems incredibly weak when dealing with longer range encounters. Your shots would not automatically hit back in Fallout 3. Your skills determined their success. Now with skills gone, everybody can just snipe fools from a distance and the AI kinda has nothing to throw against that.
If you're getting a new studio and a new Quicklook room - please find a way to sit closer to the TV. Also, for Quicklooks it would be really nice if you guys could sit next to each other all the time. From that one video we've seen, PC Quicklooks are kind of a mess, since one guy has to watch stuff on the TV and basically yell at the other guy sitting behind (?) him on the PC spot. Less than ideal and it makes for some weird moments in those QLs.
