I've pulled from DKC all the time in my Mario Maker levels. I consider them to be the best 2D platformers around so taking queues from them makes me happy. Sometimes it's just been the basic idea like in Saunter/Halt Station which was inspired by the iconic Stop & Go Station. The basic idea is that you hit P Switched to stop conveyors which otherwise make Dry Bones move way too fast to just jump on. It can also be more direct like in my one underwater course, The Reef With A Heart of Gold which in addition to a slight Lava Lagoon influence borrows a good bit of geometry as well for flourish. A lot of the time it's just basic level design principles. DKC is the best, my levels are solid. Check out all 32!
I also replay classic games a lot. Used to try to get my times for Kazooie and Tooie down until I saw runs of both. I had been happy doing it once a year getting around 6-7 hours for Kazooie and around 12-14 for Tooie. After seeing what could be done I felt like I didn't need to do it fast anymore because someone else can do that better and in less time. Part of this was speedruns replacing replaying games for me. After all, why spend 7 hours replaying a game when you can spend 1 hour watching it be replayed? Much more time effective way to go down memory lane.
A lightbulb speaker doesn't sound like the worst idea. Makes for fewer things to put into ceilings in that use case. Of course it doesn't make sense when all your bulbs are in ceiling fans or lamps instead of evenly spaces out ceiling holes.
@nigeth: So in a nutshell, what you're saying is that Mario Maker shouldn't be their favourite game of the year because more people play their levels than yours or mine?
There's so much butthurt that Mario Maker is their number 1 when I'm frankly surprised that they/you didn't see it coming. They spent an hour the other day arguing about Fallout and have repeatedly and coherently explained why they didn't think the Witcher was all that great.
More like they completely missed that potentially interesting discussion. You really think Dan would be so high on SMM if he was just some unknown dude? He'd get no feedback on his levels, making it a fairly fruitless effort. Don't think many people are butthurt that MM is number 1 (who gets angry about a subjective list of favourite games?), it's just that the discussion was kind of disappointing. It was basically just Brad trying to bring up a few points, Jeff and Dan not seeing those issues and that was it.
Literally the only thing that disappointed me about the podcasts/lists/whatever. The discussion was very meh compared to the Skyrim/Saint's Row 3 discussions etc.
I'm some unknown dude, Super Mario Maker is my Number Two pick behind Heroes of the Storm which is basically my Invisible Ink so it's not a knock for SMM to be second to it.
Man, the music section was fucked again! Man that awards catagory has always had questionable picks. One year being a good remix of LttP was good enough to win it, the next being an amazing remix of DKC wasn't good enough to list in favor of some minimal chip tunesy thing. The next year the extremely well put together chiptunes lose to Metal Gear Solid for some reason which I didn't even realize has music to note. Plus apparently Journey didn't get on its year as Brad noted. Man.
Well, at least history is on the side of the games that get snubbed apparently!
