Really glad to see a lot of community is with me, putting Persona 5 high up on lists. I loved it a lot as well, the improvements to the dungeons, gameplay and confidant system made it so hard to put down. Much harder than previous Persona games, all of which I tended to put down and switch to a Let's Play.
Glad to see Persona 5 placing in a lot of people's lists. That game is fantastic. I love the switch from boring procedural dungeons to more hand crafted Paper Mario style dungeons. That's a big part of why it's the first Persona game I've ever finished myself (and the only Persona game I've ever finished twice), but there's also the amazing style, music, confidant system, etc.
V3 also hit me that hard. Just, such pure despair for like days after I finished the first the first trial. Really, I don't think a game has ever hurt me so bad. And then later I was in fucking stitches over the final case. What a great way to close it out. Also the individual cases were all in all very good.
Also appreciate the high placements of Persona 5, Yakuza 0 and Mario.
I hope the way you guys are talking about trying other Yakuza games independently doesn't preclude a Beast in the East Season 2 with Kiwami next year. I'm really looking forward to that!
Made an edit to drop Pyre and A Hat in Time in favor of Night in the Woods and Rivals of Aether. Basically didn't feel strongly enough about Pyre after revisiting it the other day, realized Night in the Woods (which I beat last weekend) is going to stick with me and, therefore, hangs on this list. Finally decided that despite my misgivings about Rivals of Aether it belongs on the list given how much I've played on it and how I'm likely going to continue playing it into 2018 and beyond.
I will say of A Hat In Time it's really great and I still do feel it's very strong, just not quite enough to make the list. It restored my faith in indie 3D Platformers and after Yooka-Laylee that's quite a feat.
Re Raiden twist, yes. There is actually a 2017 game that does the Raiden twist. That you haven’t heard about the twist is a sign that everyone who saw it kept their mouths shut and kept Twitter spoiler free. Even though they really really wanted to talk about it because holy shit, it was a real gut punch of a twist. Exquisitely done, but wow it hurt.
