Alright, I'm giving this game a shot. I haven't really played since red/blue (hence the oblivious character name below), but I'm curious how all the online functionality works now. I added quite a few people after skimming semi-randomly through this thread. At some point, I might PM all of you individually, but for now I'm going to get back to playing.

" I would suggest something with racing like Forza 3"

Hell yes! Forza 3 is the way to go!

Edit: Video proof from a Giant Bomb race night of why this is the case...

Awesome! If/when you start playing, don't let the first chapter put you off — the game picks up pretty dramatically once you get out of the starting zone.

These are all hilarious, thanks everyone! I've tweaked the algorithm a bit by adding random adjectives and comparatives to some of the phrases. Enjoy!

" Just out of interest, would it be possible to take game names from the Giant Bomb database? "
That was my initial thought when putting this together. I took a cursory glance at the API documentation and it appeared to be centered largely around querying for specific games/platforms/etc., meaning that generating a list of random games would be possible but not as simple as I had hoped. As a result, I just compiled a list of notable games (using a combination of GB's lists and Wikipedia's top-sellers by platform). I'll definitely look into GB API integration as a future improvement though!

By "catch up", do you mean you're looking for recommendations from the past X years or just good PC games in general? If you haven't played it, I'd definitely recommend The Witcher from 2007. It's an excellent adult's RPG with some interesting decision points and a superb soundtrack. You'll also be set up perfectly for the sequel coming out this year.

Recently, I was required to develop a game as part of an interactive computer graphics course. I kept having ideas like "tetris on steroids" and "bejeweled meets ricochet", so I decided to hack together an automated system to generate thousands of such ideas. The result was ultimately completely unhelpful in relation to the project, but has given me a few good laughs with its ridiculous suggestions:

The multiplayer of Gears of War meets the art design of Mario Kart Wii.

The next generation of Golf.

The controls of Grand Theft Auto IV meets the characters of Nintendogs.

...that last one could get rather ugly. If you want, you can give it a shot for yourself:  http://oddfinch.com/gameideas/

Let me know if you find anything awry, but note that unfathomably terrible game ideas are a feature, not a bug.

Greetings from a not-so-sunny Southern California!

I've been MIA the past two weeks due to spring break travel, but I assure you I have not run screaming from race night due to my inability to keep a virtual vehicle on pavement. I plan to continue subjecting others to my terrible driving for at least another week, as I will be back in town starting tomorrow. With GBGT going on, I can certainly understand if race night is full up, so I'll be happy to wait around for a space if needed. Cheers!

Well, that was actually pretty awesome despite my inability to place anywhere very far ahead of last in the actual races. Time to get some more practice racing without that incredibly useful rewind button...

Downhill coasting should clearly be a built-in race option. That was spectacular (and surprisingly zen-like).

@PsEG: Awesome, thanks for the suggestions (and for taking the care to spoiler the car unlocks).

I've made some more single-player progress and built up a few decent vehicles. I'm sure my ability to competitively race isn't exactly up to par, but I'll be happy to join in tonight if there's room.
