@theoratog: I've been playing Divinity Original Sin recently and have been really enjoying it, though it can be pretty brutal. Or I suck at playing RPGs...I probably just suck.
MGS 3, Resident Evil 4, Shadow of the Colossus, Uncharted 2-4, The Last of Us, Silent Hill 2 and 3, and a couple of others I can't think of. These are games I'll play through even now should the mood take me.
It depends on the game. If progression is tied directly to getting from point A to point B, then I usually get frustrated and will look up where to go next. On the other hand, if it's an open world game or if it's designed with exploration in mind, such as The Witcher 3, or more recently for myself, Prey, then I absolutely love just wandering around and organically arriving at the next objective. I lose hours to wanderlust in games that encourage progressing at your own speed in a rich world.
I've found remapping the controls helps a bit, especially with shooting. I mapped it to LT since I pretty much constantly hold it down. That frees up the right thumb to focus on jumping and dashing. Is the game still brutal and cruel? Yes. Have I still jumped off my couch in exasperation? Yes. But it's still a bit of an edge, and better players than I may be able to do something with it.
