Well, yeah; the game deserves a fair chance because the later levels are fantastic, and they weren't playing it properly. That's not complaining because I like the game and others don't, I'd' just rather people not look at two guys who don't like the game and think "This is terrible!" when in fact, it gets really good. If you're not into this kind of game, it's not going to change your mind at all, but if you're aprehensive and an avid Contra fan, the QL would push you far from this game. That's not quite fair considering the hardcore fan base of games like this, and that it was reviewed by people who aren't really into this level of difficulty - even with the admittedly shoddy checkpoint system.

If you don't like the way they do it, make your own fucking website and do it differently. The only people who do this kind of shit are fans of Japanese games who lose their shit when the staff doesn't declare their game the greatest thing ever They don't hate this game because of the anime style, they hate it because of the way its designed. Dude, I think you're missing the point. By not playing the game knowing the controls, you're basically piloting a plane without ever being taught how. I get that they're just quick glimpses into what the game is about; and I love that the GB team are the only guys online who have the balls to go into a game blind and just talk about what's going on - but they could at least click on "options" first. That's kind of the most important part in any game - without controls, you can't play anything properly.
It's just like every other year man. The industry rarely disappoints when it comes to a slew of new titles ready for the new year. For the past 5 years I've constantly been wowed at the quality and quantity of titles released.
Dude, Super Castlevania 4 is arguably the best Castlevania game you can find. 8 way whip control, awesome enemies, imaginitive level design, and a fantastic soundtrack. Don't pass it up.
I don't know about you guys, but I'm a huge fan of old school side-scrollers along the Contra vein. Stating my obvious bias,let me just say I think this game is a gem.
I manage to finish most levels without any horrible difficulty curve outside of the obvious memorization of levels and boss patterns; but above and beyond that, many of the complaints pertained to shoddy checkpoints (probably the only valid complaint I can see), artistic style, and the lack-of or increasing number of things going on on-screen at once.
The projectile hell nature of the game, coupled with the incredible variety in moves that you can execute and incredible control scheme allowed you to play out some pretty incredible looking scenarios. The environments are pretty, enemy variety is great, and the weapon system and variety are extremely solid. On top of that, I think that the Rising mode is a fantastic way to make your way through the game at an easier pace regardless of if you're playing single or multiplayer. I thought it was a lot of bang for the 15 dollar price tag.
