Best of 2010

For the record: 2010 was kinda weak.

Note: There are a bunch of 2010 games I'm interested in but might not play until after the voting is done.
Mostly AssCreed and NeedSpeed. Also Rock Band 3. etc.

List items

  • I am hugely nostalgic for River City Ransom. Thought it was totally awesome. That's probably impacting my judgment here. But regardless, Scott Pilgrim did all the right things for me. The highest level of enjoyment I've gotten from a game this year.

  • For all the concessions made to create a Battlefield for consoles, the Battlefield mutliplayer remains recognizable as such. I like Battlefield a lot, and so it's my most played game of the year, and #2 on this list.

  • Its narrative qualities, and the distinct feel and atmosphere granted by its great use of the Old West makes whatever minor niggles there are not matter much in the end. And the end is thoroughly satisfying.

  • I'm in complete support of Quantic Dream's ambitions. And many a times does Heavy Rain bring forth certain emotions and intrigue with its intense, well constructed scenarios. As a whole it could have been better executed, but yeah, more of this please.

  • A hugely vast and well grounded universe filled with interesting characters and conflicts and subplots and stuff and things. It's ridiculous. And while I wish there was more of a focus on loot (there is none whatsoever), the shooty gameplay is also quite enjoyable.

  • It's not all I was hoping for, but what it does really well is mood and atmosphere. Remedy has captured the feeling of being alone in the woods at night. Only instead of your mind making you see and hear things that aren't there... Luckily you've got a flashlight to scare off the axewielding madmen with.

  • Yo do you like stupid fun? Or perchance absolutely ridiculous over the top nonsense?

  • It is categorically unfit to be played as an action game, so I stealthed as much as possible, thought the gameplay was alright that way. But what makes it great is the sneaky characters, writing and last but most, the tension and impact provided by the real-time dialog system and seemingly seamless - properly non-linear - story.

  • I haven't played it for long yet...I type, having played it for like five hours in one sitting. There really is something special about this game.

  • The tactile controls and unsettling atmosphere provided by the visual and audio design makes it stand out as a memorable experience despite of its brevity.
