So my Tarantula molted...

My beautiful Chilean Rose named Danica :D

Anyway, i realised she was preparing for a molt (when an immature arachnid sheds its exoskeleton to allow growth). Basically what they do is lay a web "molting mat" and stop eating for a period of time before it (the amount of time varies greatly, ive had some fast for a few week, others a few months).

I woke up in the morning and noticed that she was pretty much flat on her back. Inexperienced arachnid owners could be fooled into thinking that they're dead as they look, well, dead. But if you look close enough you will see slight movement in their legs.

Blurry image but you get the idea =]
Blurry image but you get the idea =]

She was like that for a good 1.5 to 2 hours before she managed to break through the carapace, and that's when things got a little gross because watching a tarantula pull itself out of itself is both amazing and disgusting!

After another 40mins or so she finally started making some progress on getting those legs of hers free, which is also the most crucial and nail-biting part of a molt, because if the humidity in the vivarium had been too low during the tarantula's prep for it, her legs could quite easily have gotten stuck and the only option then would have been to 'put her out of her misery'. (for the record, she's perfectly fine and her legs didnt get stuck =])

 about 2.5 hours in
 about 2.5 hours in

After another 30mins her legs were pretty much free and all that was left was to rest and to get her bum free of the old exoskeleton.

more blurry molting, she's curled up
more blurry molting, she's curled up
She was like that for a long-ass time, i'd say about 2 hours, but eventually she got some strength back and managed to get her bum free so i grabbed the 'old skin' so that i could study it.

Here are some final pics showing her freshly molted and her old exoskeleton...

there she is, in her new 'skin' =]
there she is, in her new 'skin' =]

all in one piece!
all in one piece!

I can't help but be really amazed by being able to witness something like this, i've seen a lot of T's molt and still get stunned every time.
just looking at the old 'shell' and how they just pull themselves out of it blows my mind.

sorry if you're grossed out by arachnids :P

Dude... awesome.  Arachnids are cool, but I could never have one as a pet.

Wow that's pretty awesome. When I think of molting, I usually think of a thin layer... but that's like a shell!

Whoa. That is awesome! Beautiful lady you have there! I used to fancy having one of those but I know I wouldn't have been able to care for it correctly.

Sir, there seems to be a spider in those pictures.  Let me assist in getting rid of it with a FLAMETHROWER!

Nah jk.  It's great that you do not have a fear of spiders.  I personally would not want one in my house.

That first picture. Looks like she's got a massive hole in her torso. Hmm. That aside you should've recorded it. I would've love to see it moult since I'm fascinated by spiders. Of course, recording it over a span of two hours would've been hard.

Oh and whats the bite situation with pet tarantulas? Are any measures taken to limit/prevent biting? I already know that there temperament is quite calm.

naah there was no hole in her torso, its just a bad quality pic, if she had a hole before the molt she'd have died long ago.
well i think the next time she does it ill record it all and speed it up, it looks really gross at high speed haha

That is quite terrifying. I don't think I could ever have an arachnid as a pet, as whenever I see a spider I am compelled to kill it with fire.

The closest thing I got to gross is a turtle. A red eared slider. The most basic turtle you'll see in pet shops. But the best part is that they live for a long ass time and they get fuckin huge.

most new world tarantulas have urticating hairs which they shoot at predators as a defense. they cause a very nasty and super itchy rash, and if they get you in the eyes can cause temporary loss in vision quality.

There arnt any measures to prevent biting really, the only thing i can think of is that if you have a bitey one, dont put your hands near it :P haha

I read "melted", glad that isn't the case.
Very cool. I between a deep admiration for them and being scared shitless of them.
Either way, I ain't scared of the "tarantula" types.
Nice pictures.

Ya see, to you that is a good thing because it means she cant get out and hurt herself. When I read that, all I can think is : I am trapped in a room with a creature capable of climbing on ceiling and cocooning its prey in silk

Cool post :D Also, arachnids are disgusting, and I could never have one myself. Watching pictures is as close as I voluntarily get. But it was interesting to see the process. You should film it next time and speed it up.
