So my Tarantula molted...

My beautiful Chilean Rose named Danica :D

Anyway, i realised she was preparing for a molt (when an immature arachnid sheds its exoskeleton to allow growth). Basically what they do is lay a web "molting mat" and stop eating for a period of time before it (the amount of time varies greatly, ive had some fast for a few week, others a few months).

I woke up in the morning and noticed that she was pretty much flat on her back. Inexperienced arachnid owners could be fooled into thinking that they're dead as they look, well, dead. But if you look close enough you will see slight movement in their legs.

Blurry image but you get the idea =]
Blurry image but you get the idea =]

She was like that for a good 1.5 to 2 hours before she managed to break through the carapace, and that's when things got a little gross because watching a tarantula pull itself out of itself is both amazing and disgusting!

After another 40mins or so she finally started making some progress on getting those legs of hers free, which is also the most crucial and nail-biting part of a molt, because if the humidity in the vivarium had been too low during the tarantula's prep for it, her legs could quite easily have gotten stuck and the only option then would have been to 'put her out of her misery'. (for the record, she's perfectly fine and her legs didnt get stuck =])

 about 2.5 hours in
 about 2.5 hours in

After another 30mins her legs were pretty much free and all that was left was to rest and to get her bum free of the old exoskeleton.

more blurry molting, she's curled up
more blurry molting, she's curled up
She was like that for a long-ass time, i'd say about 2 hours, but eventually she got some strength back and managed to get her bum free so i grabbed the 'old skin' so that i could study it.

Here are some final pics showing her freshly molted and her old exoskeleton...

there she is, in her new 'skin' =]
there she is, in her new 'skin' =]

all in one piece!
all in one piece!

I can't help but be really amazed by being able to witness something like this, i've seen a lot of T's molt and still get stunned every time.
just looking at the old 'shell' and how they just pull themselves out of it blows my mind.

sorry if you're grossed out by arachnids :P

Can you pick that thing up or will it bite? Do you only leave it that glass thing or are you one of those ppl who lets it walk up your arm and on your face?

When I first read it I thought it said "My tarantula melted".
I wish it had, I hate spiders.
But actually tarantula's are pretty cool by spider standards.

Thanks for sharing.

Very interesting, and good pictures.  Wouldn't want to keep one as a pet, but I find them very interesting as an observer nonetheless.

Thats awesome, I have an Iguana and love seeing him shed huge pieces of himself and hold it to the light to see the small details of his scales.

I can't imagine having one complete piece to look at despite my dislike of spiders.

You mentioned she doesn't really have the mental capacity to play, but can she form bonds? Like, is she capable of recognizing you?

Ya... I never understood how people could want bugs/spiders/scorpions and the like as pets or grow attached to them in any shape way or form. To each their own/eye of the beholder and all that.

That is pretty gnarly. After living in New Mexico and having to watch out for tarantulas in my garage and all, I don't think I could have one as a pet but more power to ya.

go for it dude =] they're fun pets.
start with a Chilean rose or a Mexican red knee, nice and docile those two
oh and for a first timer id suggest a male, they live for about 5 or 6 years as opposed to the females which can live from 18 to 22 years, i mean you dont wanna get a tarantula, realise that you dont like it, and are stuck with it for a long time haha

That is fascinating and all admit ignorance as I didn't even realize they molt. I'm tempted to get a tarantula myself but don't know the first thing about taking care of one (though I can always learn, of course). Thanks for posting this!

Nice, and good work freaking out the pussies that are afraid of spiders here, we've had quite a few of this kind of thread and it's always funny =P
I've wanted to have a tarantula for a long time, probably since I was about 7, but my whole family hates Insects & Spiders, but not Scorpions for some reason =/

My mate had a Red-Legged Tarantula, beautiful animal.

@VoodooTerror:  That's certainly awesome. I've tried to charm my family into letting me have a spider or a scorpion because, yeah I think they are neat, and it would help me get over my slight fear of bugs. I'm getting better at it, mostly because I have to catch some for my toad to eat.

I keep crickets/Mealworms/and supers in my room already with my Skink, so getting extra bugs wouldn't be a biggie, i'd just be worried about the care you'd need to supply for the little guy/girl.. *paranoid*

wow, how small are these birds? haha
i have to say, thats pretty crazy, even a Goliath bird eating tarantula (the biggest in the world) rarely actually eats birds haha
where are you from?

they're venomous obviously, but even the most venomous new world tarantula wouldn't kill a human, unless you were allergic to the venom.
the bites do hurt a lot tho, and some of the more 'potent' bites would probably need a hospital visit, but yeah, they wouldnt kill you.....probably

I had one of my pet fish melt once.  I have no idea why it did, it just basically fell apart overnight and there was no beautiful new fishie inside, just it's guts which promptly floated to the surface. No pictures though.
