wasn't copernicus employed by the catholic church his entire life and the reason galileo was recanted was because he included a parody of the pope as an fool and pressure from other scientific figure of the times (tycho right?).
also those figure were definitely during the renaissance and not the dark ages.
Also weren't church scholars encouraged to study the natural world through observation. It was because of the claspe of the roman empire, waring bandit states, and a lack of literate population that kept the dark ages dark. Its been years since school, so feel free to correct me. I guess I can look it all up on like a wiki or something, but if some one has a nuance take please and thank you
I feel like this notion of intolerance to science may be blown out of proportion. Like its a good monty python bit, but Im not sure that sentiment is factual, but I'm no historian so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
