I miss the dropped award categories. I understand the need/want to mix things up after 10 years of the same lists. My complaint with the going through games released throughout the year and talking about them is, many of those games aren't worth talking about.
I don't agree that (From the consumer perspective) that this is new or revolutionary at all. Onlive was doing this exact thing 10 years ago. It even had the same subscription access + game purchase model with no discount on purchase price and no way to import your library. I'm sure the back end is vastly different, but again, from the consumer perspective it was exactly the same as this. It "worked" but there was no incentive for anyone to jump on board.
