Make my own Indie games? Anyone else interested?

I have earned a free 12-month subscription to the membership needed to make XBL indie games. I can also gain all of the programs free due to a membership through my laptop. All of that doesnt make sense but thats not my problem. I know its all legit and stuff so again thats not a problem. :P Once I start up the 12 month membership it runs as one, so I dont want to start it without any idea's and end up wasting it. But it doesnt matter my main problems are one of a few things.

For anyone interested in making their own games: The program you want to search for is XNA Game Studio 3.1. It can run under .NET framework rates etc. If it doesnt make sense just ask if you are interested.

I dont know what I would even do to make the games or have any idea for the games. I have ideas but not ones like some other amazing games on the Indie catalog. Should I just go ahead with it and hope for the best? Does anyone have any idea's as to what I need to do to get them published or does anyone have any ideas for a game? :P
Would anyone out in the community be keen to make indie games?

I'd suggest a rhythm RPG. An RRPG, if you will.

You're starting the thing from the back end a little bit. First try to make a game. Then ask if it's any worth. If you never made game before, chances are the first try won't produce no braid ;).

@WoodenPlatypus: Make limbo.

Here is the idea for the new game "limbo":
You are a person, and you need to bend over backwards so that you can go under a bar. Each time you go under the bar, the bar gets lowered.

It should end up being the next braid if you do it right.

Yeah I guess I got a bit ahead of myself. I forgot people have probably tried loads before a game got published. Its too early for me to think seriously :P I guess I'd be proud if I made a game like "Dont B Nervous Talking 2 Girls" XD

Do you know how to program?  I would make sure you do before you start your membership, since otherwise you will waste a good period of time just learning to program.  Also, these are $1 indie games.  Look at Baby Maker Extreme and I MADE A GAME WITH ZOMBIES IN IT, their ideas are fairly simple.

First off your going to want to learn object oriented programming(oop). Learning in C# would be best but you could learn in Java and transfer the skills(the two languages are very similar). Maybe take a few courses at the local University(first level courses are usually intro to OOP with Java).

Secondly you can make and test the game on PC for free without activating your 12 months. That 12 months is purely for deploying to Xbox, the code you write and test on PC should work with little to no modification to deploy on Xbox so there is really no point in activating it until you are ready for testing and deployment.

Thirdly XNA is a framework, not a game engine. So there is going to be a lot more programming and back end work then there would be on a different platform. There are many free(and great) game engines available for indie development, you can even get UDK3 for free(yes, that is Unreal Engine 3, as in the engine used for Mass Effect, GoW, and many other AAA titles). Though if you wanted to sell your work in these engines you usually have to buy an indie license.

@CoverlessTech:
Well, for a start its the holidays so I dont know if any kind of courses are on at the moment (not to mention im still in college so I dont know if I'd be allowed in them) Just wondering, have you done this before? You know too much :P

@tnecniv:

I didnt think of any of that last night, I was hoping to get some information on how to find out though.

@CowMuffins:

Nope no clue, I wrote the blog last night (really tired at the time) so i wasnt considering any of that. Ive sort of came into this not knowing anything. I know how to program flash movements and such through things like fireworks etc :P

And thanks to everyone else who has attempted to help my naive brain :D

@WoodenPlatypus: There are no computer science courses offered at the college you go to? Yes, I do this now. I'm a CS major who has been developing in xna for a few months now. It's pretty easy if you understand oop but it's also very easy to get in over your head.

Pick up "Beginning XNA 3.x Game Programming - From Novice to Professional". It wont teach you oop but it's a great start to xna, you'll have things moving around on the screen and interacting with each other pretty easily.

As for learning oop, I think a class room with some experienced programmers is the best way to do it. In my intro courses we used the book "Big Java"; as I said the two languages are pretty similar so the skills can be transferred right away, but you might want to look into getting a beginner C# book that teaches oop as well, no need to learn Java if you don't need it.

There probably is, I will definatley look into it though. If not there will be somewhere around here that has classes on these things. Is there anywhere I can get "Beginning XNA 3.x Game Programming etc" specifically?

@WoodenPlatypus:  Should be able to get it on amazon or any local book store, I use to get mine from the Chapters down the road but they have since changed their computer section to a "Macs for idiots" section.

@trophyhunter:
And I'm sure a lot of people hate you. Go play World of Goo and then come back and say that again.

You could make that Giant Bomb game all the peoples are clamoring for. It would have to be either a beat-em-up or an RPG, naturally, because both involve using a large amount of characters. The first one would be infinitely easier to program though. If you think that the subject matter is a little too obscure, remember: Nobody buys these games anyways. If you made a Giant Bomb themed game on the other hand, I would certainly buy it.

Make a post-mortem body treatment simulator.

Perform an autopsy. Reassemble and stitch up the corpse. clean, embalm and dress the corpse for a funeral. Cremation. Necromancy. Commanding your undead horde.

Not all in that order, obviously, as it would be pretty difficult to make a zombie out of pulverized bone fragments.
