Good Wild west movies to get me in the mood for RDR
3:10 to Yuma
The Dollars Trilogy
Hang 'Em High
High Noon
The Outlaw Josey Wales
The Searchers
Tombstone
True Grit
Unforgiven - I think it is the only Western to win an Oscar for Best Picture plus Gene Hackman's best work since the French Connection
Any western with Robert Duvall
Boss N-Word - My favorite of Fred "Supafly" Williamson's Blaxploitation work.
Young Guns
The Shootist - The only good John Wayne Western
Little Big Man
The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. - technically a TV Show
Anything by this dude, maybe you heard of him?

Especially thishttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Once_Upon_a_Time_in_the_West
Plus, Unforgiven is the anti-Western, think about it...
I thought about it. Its not. Moral ambiguity has always been a staple in the old west movies since technicolor. So has revenge. The villain is unconventional and that's about it." Anything by this dude, maybe you heard of him?

OP you could watch the first 5 minutes of Silverado then turn it off. Its a pretty cool intro.
Well, Eastwood has said so himself, can't find the interview. The hero is old, has a name, is a bad shot, has a family, the list goes on...
How about The Magnificent Seven..that was a pretty good one too.
Tombstone is freaking sweet as well as Unforgiven.
A long time favourite of mine has been The Great Silence, also known as Il Grande Silenzio in it's original Italian. A really kick ass western, I highly suggest you check it out.
I would also highly recommend The Proposition, while not a Western in the strictest sense, as it's set in Australia instead of the American west, it's still an amazing movie. The plot, acting and soundtrack are all superb.
" @kmdrkul said:I first saw the movie maybe 4 months ago, and I'm still trying to wrap my head around what the hell was going on, and more specifically, why, the entire film. Seriously weird film, but I did like it for some strange reason.ahahahahahaha! I love that movie! Best role Depp has every played. Also Fistful of Dollars and The Good the Bad and the Ugly. ""Dead Man.
Just because it is the exact opposite of what you asked for."
Shane is one of my favorites.
It's pretty old though so it may not be everyone's cup of tea. I saw it waaaaay back in the day when I was a kid and AMC would actually play classic movies from the 40's and 50's.
Now they consider movies like Daylight classic. Such a shame...
" Wait --------are all of these in colour? "Why don't you like B&W? Do you have ADD or something?
Open Range
Edit: Ok, I know Lonesome Dove was a TV movie/mini series, but it's still freaking awesome.
3:10 to Yuma
Appaloosa
Unforgiven
There Will Be Blood (this one really isn't a "Western" in the traditional sense, but it's a great movie set in around the time period that RDR is set in.)
The Proposition - Not only did is the director (John Hillcoat) creating a short-film for this very game RED DEAD REDEMPTION...
http://www.imdb.com/news/ni2192297/
...but this movie is also soooo damn good. The atmosphere and music and acting examples of each at the top of their game. The story is nothing epic. It is simple, but the sheer execution I have not seen matched since. The fact that Rockstar saw fit to associate Red Dead with The Proposition is enough to make this a Must Buy.
I think everyone who is suggesting the Dollars Trilogy is kind of missing the point. He was looking for Westerns to get him in the mood for RDR, which, for all intents and purposes, is looking to be the exact opposite of the Spaghetti Western. It's much more of a John Wayne vibe than a Leone, and think suggestions should be made accordingly.
God damn it, second page, second-fucking-page." The good, the bad and the ugly is one of the best movies ever made. But if you want something more like RDR i recommend The Wild Bunch or Once Upon a Time in the West. "
Took y'all long enough to mention the best western ever made.
Thank you sir.
@Mmmslash:
If he didn't see those films, he needs to see them.
Unforgiven.

Unforgiven is the single most successful example of the Western film genre deconstructed and it's been referred to as such by Eastwood, directors, producers, writers, the academy of film and literature and countless film school and creative writing educators all over the world. That's pretty easily confirmed by doing a google search; "Unforgiven deconstructing the western". Once again, you shit on something because you either don't understand it or can't say exactly what you do like. It's so boring to watch you wade into every thread and shit on things and you must be so tired of only liking 5 minutes of things.

I know the interview you're referring to but I can't find it either. It was Eastwood and the DoP talking about the movie prior to the academy awards.
