    Goodbye, Horses. 0

Meet John Marston. He's a nice guy.   Usually known for the satire and comedic parodies of their flagship franchise – Grand Theft Auto – Rockstar Games has taken a more serious tone with their new take on the Old West, Red Dead Redemption. While the game’s open world structure is similar to that of GTA, Redemption is a more refined experience in both scope and story, and accomplishes more in terms of storytelling than most other games in the genre. Set during the early 20th Century, Red...

Players beware, you're in for a scare! 14

Much like the GTAIV expansions, Undead Nightmare conveys its own separate identity over the default RDR.While the heart of Undead Nightmare is very much centred towards zombies, the pack as a whole is like a blood coated love letter to all fans of the horror media with yes, zombies, but also bats, fog, mystical artifacts, apocalyptic horses and even unicorns... Hey there's bound to be someone who finds Unicorns just as terrifying, if not more, as a blood drenched banshee scurrying after you on a...

No puns, a Rockstar classic. 0

It's easy to forget just how special Rockstar games can be. Grand Theft Auto taints and enhances the company in equal measure with the connotations conjured when Rockstar is brought up is one of modern satire, controversy and a style of game for a very specific type of gamer. As such there was little hype about Red Dead Redemption. GTA with cowboys was the call and despite a larger than usual spread of information from Rockstar there was little idea of what kind of game awaited us. Red Dead Rede...

No Country for Dumb Men 3

Red Dead Revolver was a modest action-shooter-game-thingy released on last generation’s consoles in 2004. I’d best describe it as an unorthodox spaghetti-western game with strange controls and a cast of cowboy archetypes that had the benefit of stylish load screens and trumpet-fueled music music. Red Dead Revolver is the non-sequel to 2010’s Red Dead Redemption, and quite frankly you will not hear the name of the former game in this text review again on account to how little in common the two...

Liquid looks at Red Dead Single Player... 23

Liquid's Review of Read Dead Redemption Single Player Being a die hard PC fan there are not too many xbox360 games that get me excited any more, but when a new free roaming title from Rockstar hits the shelves it gives me cause to head to the store.   Given the quality of work that this development team has produced in the past I went into this game with high expectations and the hopes that I would have many fine hours of game play ahead of me.   My expectations were greatly met even with a few...

    Red Dead Ridiculously Great 3

I love me some westerns. There's just something about seeing the awkward teenage years of a fledgling country. The term wild west may or may not be accurate, but our imagination is alive with the idea a desert filled with insane criminals, crooked law enforcement, and untold fortunes deep in the ground all over the place. Both modern westerns and older spaghetti westerns have created this wild and dirty vision of the west, and now with Red Dead Redemption, we can not only observe the wild west, ...

An Almost Perfect Game (Single Player Only) 4

Now, I'm not the best writer so cut me some slack in that aspect of the review. I just want people to know about the game. Also I haven't gotten around to playing multiplayer yet so I didn't touch on that. Red Dead Redemption is a great game. Rockstar has made many improvements from their previous games.  I should start off by saying I'm a huge fan of the GTA Franchise, but I have a feeling that even if you're not you will agree with this review. Everyone says this game is GTA in the West. It'...

Free DLC? Nice! A whole new menu of glitches? Not so much. 2

Free downloadable content is always a welcome addition, for the most part. Outlaws to the end is a fairly substantial package adding a whole new set of multiplayer options to help you rack up the experience points to those benevolent Legend ranks. It would be a perfect package, if not for the army of Trojans that sneak their way in aswell.Red Dead Redemption was full of quirky glitches and bugs already and made the multiplayer, at times, almost unplayable. Ever since this DLC release however, it...

Red Dead Redemption creates a very believable world, where you take the place of John Marston, a former gang member who had a tough childhood and went one to make some bad decisions. He needs to cooperate with the government to make sure he clears his name and protect his family. The gameplay is basically Grand Theft Auto in a old western america, and I love me some GTA. But RDR has become my favorite Rockstar game, it has a unique setting and story, that most other open world games don't have.Yo...

    Red Dead Redemption Redefines 0

Red Dead Redemption is one of the few games that I knew next to nothing about upon its release.  All I knew going in was that it was developed by Rockstar's San Diego team, it was a spiritual successor to Red Dead Revolver, and it would be using open world mechanics more akin to the Grand Theft Auto series.  When I started playing it and reading the early reviews, I was upset about all the comparisons the media was making between it and GTA.  Red Dead Redemption felt like a game that could stan...

    Typical Rockstar Formula 0

Rockstar's newest sandbox game takes players to a place surprisingly untapped by developers: The Old West. Actually, more like early 1900's Old West where the ways of horse-riding, shooting your food and living off the land is being taken over by driving automobiles and living a more "civilized" life. You play as John Marston, a former member of a ruthless gang of outlaws who terrorized the countryside. Marston looks to get away from that life by hunting down his old compatriots at the behest o...

Become John Marston and seek your Redemption 0

Red Dead Redemption takes what we love from the Grand Theft Auto franchise and applies it to a world that is unfamiliar and largely untapped in the world of videogames. Serving as a spiritual successor to Red Dead Revolver, Redemption takes place in the early 1900's where the government is just starting to form and establish itself in a place where it's not uncommon to be killed for your possessions or just for sport by the ruthless outlaws. John Marston is a man on a mission: save his family an...

Rockstars reminds us that Western Games are NOT dead 1

It would be too easy to compare Red Dead Redemption to Grand Theft Auto. The similarities are vast, at least in the UI, and the main quest system is practically the same. Yet, Red Dead Redemption (which from henceforth shall be known strictly as RDR) transcends the old Rockstar franchise that set them apart from all other game studios. Rather than making a GTA clone, they took what they had, what they knew worked well, and evolved it.You play as John Marston, a former outlaw sent to clean up a b...

Undead Nightmare: A strong premise with weak supports 0

This generation of consoles has been kind to Rockstar Games; GTA IV broke all previous sales records, both The Lost and the Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony were well received by critics, and Red Dead Redemption reinvigorated western video games. This was also the generation where Rockstar set aside the 69 jokes to pursue more dramatic story arcs. So it is sort of strange that Undead Nightmare exists. It essentially comes off as a zombie B-Movie version of Red Dead proper, full of corny dialogu...

Zombies and Cowboys, what's not to like? 0

It's been awhile since I played Red Dead Redemption. So when I heard about this new DLC I was mildly curious, plus I had some spare money so I figured I'd go ahead and give it a try.  I must say I was quite impressed with what Rockstar accomplished.  Undead Nightmare plays as an independent story. The narrative sets the stage around the end-game of the normal game. John Marston feels something eerie in the night air, low and beyond the dead are lurking and all hell breaks loose.   The first thin...

Play it NOW! - Red Dead Redemption 0

John Marston is single-handedly the greatest protagonist that Rockstar has ever created. The game's ability to capture his personality and simultaneously recreate the picturesque Wild West setting, makes for a compelling narrative rarely accomplished in games. Much of this has to do with the excellent voice acting and animation, making the scenes very cinematic. There are also the usual Rockstar tropes of dialog containing social commentary on American life, but Redemption executes these ...

    Another Rockstar Classic! 0

Rockstar have created the best open world game ever, with Red Dead Redemption.  This game takes a formula that was mastered with the GTA series and takes it too a whole new level.Setting the game in the wild west was a master stroke, giving access to a dark and brutal world which has been rarely seen in gaming. Only Rockstar could have done such a world justice showing both its beauty and harsh reality. Graphically the game is the best of its kind, by far overshadowing anything before ...

On a lonely windswept hill I witnessed a man huddled over a woman’s corpse, he wept and slowly pulled his revolver to his head. I reacted to slow and soon there were two corpses lying in the dirt. Events such as this tragic scene are what makes Red Dead Redemption truly stand out. A living breathing, decaying gray land, inundated with personality and incredible detail. Rarely do men get second chance a life an opportunity to set things right, John Marston is given a opening to make amends for hi...

If you say he isn't cool, I don't know what is.   John Marston, I'm impressed.  This game was amazing. It was nothing like what I've ever played before and hey, what do you know, it was put out by Rockstar Games. I've never really been a fan of their games, the gangster thing just doesn't appeal. I mean, it's been done a million times. But a decent western game, now there's something new.  I played on the 360 and the controls were great. Similar to driving a car, you can ride a horse, drive...

I don’t typically care for open world action games, but given how Rockstar has continuously received universal acclaim as masters of the genre, I decided it was high time for me to try one of their “masterpieces”. Playing Red Dead Redemption was a telling experience that finally shed some light onto the Rockstar phenomenon- if you’re among the majority of players who prefer a great story over great gameplay, then Red Dead Redemption is likely the game for you. Decline of the Old West, Rebirth of a Classic Formula 0

Red Dead Redemption is the most recent adventure from Rockstar Games, veterans of open-world game design. Set in 1911 in a fictitious land near the border with Mexico, Red Dead Redemption takes place during a unique time in American history: the decline of the Old West as technology, society, and the federal government work to “civilize” the last of the Western territories. It follows the story of John Marston, a reformed outlaw whose wife and son are kidnapped by government agents. In exchang...

A return to form for Westerns. 0

I've come to a realisation, Rockstar and the branches there of are some of the best game developers in the current generation of consoles. They make their games with equal portions of well rounded characters, intriguing story and varied gameplay. Red Dead Redemption is no different, combining Rockstar's usual high standard of open world gameplay with an old west setting. The first Red Dead game, back in 2004 for the Xbox and PS2, was a mission based third person shooter that followed the advent...

The American Old West, home of the cowboy, ranchers, county sheriff's and the ubiquitous noble steed. The dusty plains of the Western desert of late 19 century-early 1900s have barely been touched within video games, even with the recent Gun and Call of Juarez series mantle that there's much fun to be had within the setting. Ded Read Deremption 2

Red Dead Redemption is the prime example of how a sandbox game should be.  The comparisons to GTA IV are totally irrelevant and unnecessary. Rockstar has done a phenomenal job in creating an enthralling world with a great story line and cast of characters.  Unlike GTA, Red Dead takes itself far more seriously and rarely dives into the realm of the ridiculous (although hilarious) quirks that are found in the typical GTA game.  There are funny characters and moments, but the atmosphere and gamepla...

How the West Was Wanting 1

Warning: Mild, vague-ish spoilers in this review. It’s a patent-pending Late to the Party review, so I’m not too concerned. I just finished Red Dead Redemption and, I have to say: it would’ve made a pretty good movie. However, that’s not something you want to say about a video game. It’s impossible to spend more than fifteen minutes in the world of Red Dead Redemption without being overwhelmed by the game’s graphical fidelity. Everything in the world looks absolutely beautiful, from the musc...

There was little said about Red Dead Redemption before I became extremely excited about it. I heard the terms "western", "sandbox", and "Grand Theft Auto 4 engine". This was enough for me to already put in my top listed games. I even wanted the game so bad, I went back and picked up Red Dead Revolver to play through it. I can safely say that Redemption is nothing like the spiritual father of the game.Redemption is set during the 1911's. You play as John Marshall, a former outlaw destined to stop...

Well for starters I really had high hopes for this game and it truly delivered on every level.  The start of the game really opens up the games story very well and slowly introduces the main character, instead of throwing a bunch of things at you at once and saying "Alright fix this and that".  Speaking of the main character, John Marston is a man on a mission.  You see the pain in his eyes and the troubled past in his heart, but you know the wants to set things right.  The graphics in the game ...

Like the Legends and Killers before it, Liars and Cheats gives the multiplayer portion of Red Dead Redemption a huge breeze of raining additions. Unlike Legends and Killers before it, Liars and Cheats can at least be seen as DLC that could potentially be well worth the money.       “Hasn't the zombie craze in video game design died off yet?” That's what I thought to myself as I saw the title “Undead Nightmare.” Red Dead Redemption's singleplayer expansion came out in July 2010. When it was first announced, many were slightly sceptical. There were zombie games all over the place with Dead Rising and Left 4 Dead, as well as plenty of undead-inspired mini-games and pieces of DLC such as the Nazi Zombies mode in Call of Duty. For Rockstar, a company whose wont it is to paro...

Red Dead Redemption is sort of like the Bully of this console generation. It does the open world thing Grand Theft Auto does, and while the setting may be more niche than that series, there are some things it ends up doing better. It doesn't really have much to do with Red Dead Revolver, taking place decades later and sharing none of the characters. It's the story of John Marston, a former criminal-turned-farmer who's forced to track down his old gang members after the government ta...

What Sergio Leone and many other filmmakers did to the western and action film genre so many years ago Rockstar has now done with video games. Cowboys were always seen as heroes and saving the girl while stopping a back robbery but the genre changed when murder, crime and deception opened up an entire new outlook on what the west was. Gamers have spent a good time shooting up the world in modern day times where relatable circumstances took place in New York City style setting but take that one m...
