Battlefield Hardline Review

Battlefield Hardline did not crash during our tests and appears to function precisely as expected at this time.

Vehicles are still a factor, but we're mostly talking about cop cars and bikes, not jets and tanks.
Vehicles are still a factor, but we're mostly talking about cop cars and bikes, not jets and tanks.

Do you want to play more Battlefield-style multiplayer, with some new modes and an ever-so-slight spin on said multiplayer's scale and weaponry? That's the question you need to ask if you're considering a purchase of Battlefield Hardline. It seems to be functional (which is more than you could say about its predecessor when it launched in 2013), and it plays like a Battlefield game, generally speaking. Either that's something you're interested in paying full price for or, for whatever reason, you aren't. The other parts of Battlefield Hardline aren't interesting enough to further justify the purchase, so I probably wouldn't take the single-player campaign into account too heavily if you're on the fence.

Or, to put it another way, you probably already know whether you're going to buy Battlefield Hardline or not.

To separate a bit from the crowd of people who are already either firmly in or out of Camp Battlefield, let's talk a bit about those modes and tweaks. Battlefield Hardline is about cops and criminals instead of the military and "opposing forces." So the scale of the conflicts you see in the multiplayer mode are... somewhat smaller. Or, at least, you can't spawn with a rocket launcher. Instead you just have to miraculously find a rocket launcher out in the environment. And you aren't flying jets around all crazy-like... but yeah, there are still helicopters. It's a somewhat minor change, which is kind of ridiculous (or, depending on your viewpoint, quite worrying) when you think about the scope of most police operations.

Hardline leans into no-respawn, round-based modes a bit more heavily than BF4 did with a hostage rescue mode and a VIP escort mode. It also turns the conquest control points into vehicles that must be driven quickly to score in the Hotwire mode. Hotwire's a cool idea, but with vehicle-destroying weaponry being a little harder to come by, it's not quite as explosive as I'd originally hoped. Heist has one team defending money from the attacking team, and Blood Money turns that into a two-way money fight as both teams try to secure cash from a central vault by returning it to their base. That gets interesting because you can steal cash from the enemy team's base, potentially making for some big score swings. From there it's Team Deathmatch and two sizes of the standard Battlefield Conquest mode. It's a solid variety of new things to mess with that doesn't sacrifice the things that typically bring people to a Battlefield game. That said, I found myself sticking to Conquest and TDM, just like I did in BF4.

You'll play as Nick Mendoza in the single-player campaign.
You'll play as Nick Mendoza in the single-player campaign.

The single-player side of Hardline is interesting, but the more I played of it, the more that interest became academic, rather than anything to do with the actual game. It's built around episodes, a bit like a makeshift TV show. This is nice because it forces each mission to have a little bit of setup up front, some action in the middle that crescendos into some kind of light payoff. Every 30-45 minutes or so you're getting some bit of advancement on the story. That would all work a bit better if the story was any good. Instead it feels like something that is attempting to approximate "gritty" television police dramas without any of the character development, tension, or logic that drives the genre's best work. Double-crosses happen out of nowhere in what quickly becomes an affair about dirty cops doing things to other dirty cops. By the end it attempts to wrap it up into some kind of message, but the way the story gets there only manages to make the final shot laughable.

The gameplay end of the campaign is quite a bit different than what you'd expect from a Battlefield game, too. It's a stealth-optional game that gives you a silly-looking "freeze" mechanic that you can use to flash your badge and effectively "stun" up to three enemies at range. Then you can waltz up and, unless one of them gets too jumpy or another patrolling guard sees you in action, you can handcuff and arrest enemies, clearing whole encounters without firing a shot. You even tag enemies with a cell phone camera, completing the loop on making this feel a bit like a low-rent Far Cry.

The dumb thing about all this stealth is that you frequently roll with an AI-controlled partner, who the developers have seemingly decided to make totally invisible to enemy AI. So I ran into multiple situations where I was stalking up behind some obviously corrupt security guard to make a completely legit arrest when my AI guy came up, ran right though the enemy's vision cone, and got behind me all without causing anyone to be alerted. Make no mistake, it would be way worse if the idiotic partner AI could break your stealth, but it makes the whole thing look and feel stupid. You can, of course, just shoot your way through those situations, but the combat against the AI isn't especially exciting. I ended up playing it fairly low-profile most of the time because, hey, at least it felt different than the typical Battlefield campaign that way.

You'll start in Miami, but the campaign takes you around to a handful of different locales.
You'll start in Miami, but the campaign takes you around to a handful of different locales.

The game handles collectibles in a way I appreciated. As you find various bits of evidence, different "cases" are opened up. Some of these factor into the main story, but they mainly just give you context on some of the crimes happening around these dirty cops. So you'll find, say, a drug lab in a militia compound or a box of liquid cocaine. Or maybe just a business card or some scrawled notes. You can scan all this stuff in with your phone, get a little bit of dialogue about the significance of said evidence, and move on. When you collect all the evidence for one of your cases, a quick video plays out to wrap things up. It gives the collectibles actual context in a way that made them feel worthwhile. It's a nice touch in an otherwise unremarkable game.

Battlefield Hardline is hardly a disaster, but it feels like a franchise spinning its wheels with minor adjustments, rather than truly advancing forward. Given the embarrassingly long time spent patching and getting Battlefield 4 up to snuff, maybe a "stable" Battlefield will be enough for some players. And if you're a die-hard fan of the franchise, perhaps the ability to play Battlefield on nine new maps will be worth the price of admission on its own. For me, Hardline just made me realize that I paid for the map packs on BF4 and never played them because the game was too broken for too long. I'd probably be served just as well by going back and playing that stuff some more.

Heh awesome subtitle. It is telling that that is the most pertinent info we need when dealing with a battlefiled game.

I will stick with BF4 because... well... why would I want BF4 without tanks and jets?

Do people still care about Battlefield? For me the move away from the SDK killed it, BF2 was the last good one. Now I just play Red Orchestra 2 for my large scale fix, it's a much better game.

I feel like this game exists almost exclusively to say "Guys, looks, we can release a shooter that isn't a heaping pile of crap for several months after release!". It was made to eventually attempt to sell us Battlefield 5, which most people wouldn't have bought if the last thing they remembered Battlefield for was BF4. So I guess if the world in my head matches up enough with reality, than you could call Hardline a success.

Of course, that's pretty sad commentary on the video games industry right now. Hey guys, look, we made a thing that works.

I'm surprised that the dev team decided to insert a single player campaign at all. I'm not sure why given that BF3 and 4 both did for little reason but I assumed Hardline's "in between" status would result in less money being spent on voice and script heavy linear adventure.

Both of the Bad Company games had campaigns that were worth seeing. BF3's campaign mostly suffered from the QTEs which come right out of the gate, but many of the levels were excellent or at least visually spectacular. BF4's campaign was a mess top to bottom, which is too bad because the opening and the first level were actually quite good. So it's not like it's impossible for these games to include a campaign that adds as much value to the product as say a Call of Duty campaign, they simply haven't really delivered on that promise since BFBC2.

The almost seems like the Arkham Orihins/Gears Judgement of the Battlefield series. I actually really liked both of those games because I knew not to expect to much and I didn't pay near full price also like Battlefield I loved the Arkham and Gears series.

Disappointed the single player isn't all that it could have been. This should just have been an expansion to Bf4.

@bulkiest_toaster: Know what you mean. Battlefront's supposedly due out this year too, so that just feels like too much of the same for my taste. Especially if you consider BF4 came out in 2013 so a new main-series game is probably due out in 2016. And I thought Call of Duty was excessive. Yeesh.

Might add God of War Ascension? At least they're naming them with a subtitle instead of a number so we know what to expect!

Any chance this game was rushed? Why not polish the story or did they figure if you buy BF it's for the multiplayer? Judging from the QL it seems like playing the bad guys would have been a better fit in SP.

Wow. If that's the case then I think we know our front-runner for GOTY. Someone (because I'm too lazy) should start keeping track of how many games release this year that work as intended from day one.

I just finished the single played, and honestly it's the most memorable FPS single player campaign since Bad Company 2. It had action, and humour with likeable characters, which most modern military shooters don't really pull off. It had a distinct feel to it with different pacing that wasn't the typical just keep running fare, including stealth and investigations, that oddly felt like Deus Ex in a lot of ways (minus the rpg elements). I like cop procedurals, stealth games and FPS' so perhaps this game was just more of my cup of tea than Jeff, but hey holy hell did you really want your coop AI be able to be spotted by the enemies? Talk about a frustrating mess that'd be. It's kind of disappointing that someone goes into a game thinking about how they didn't play the last game in the series and assumes, without going back to said game, that this one does not make any changes to it. I tried to go back to BF4 after hardline and they are very different games.

If so then they missed the mark by about a year. They also stated that they weren't annualizing Battlefield, but they could be lying.

At first the deck seemed like pure snark and I chuckled, but upon reflection it's just consumer awareness. Like, going into a BF game now, you need that information. I feel like Halo 5 is at that point as well. The first question on everyone's mind is going to be "Does this game even fucking work?"

I think this might be among my favorite reviews! Very well written, informative and still simply entertaining to read. In no small part due to that excellent subheading.

It's a bit of a shame that BF seems to continue in a direction I don't quite appreciate but I'm not holding my breath to return to the franchise either.

I'm actually really enjoying my time with it so far. I've played almost entirely single player and the fact that I do remember some character names and what the overall plot is is more than I can say for most FPS games these days.

I would have liked to see the story take a look at a more current issue like the militarization of the police but who am I kidding? No matter how well they did it, it would be mocked just to get mocked (or because it's an EA game of course).

Also - You can get Issac Clark and Ishimura patches man!

Zero interest in this - the scars from BF4 are too recent for me, even if it does work now (if it does?). Also, while the rest of the world might have accepted it, I'm still not okay with having to install something to my browser to play a game (the battlelog plugin).

@sadisticwolf: I disagree, Bad Company just felt like a bot mode with a story, that in the end meant nothing, just so they could make a sequel and that sequel had a completely pointless story which functioned under a different, more serious, tone - also for no reason.

Agreed. They tried to pass this off as an original IP that Visceral envisioned, that they just housed under the Battlefield umbrella for name's sake. But no... this is just Battlefield. Not some cop game. Perhaps it is true on how this started, but it sure changed direction at some point if true. It was no longer housing a neat idea under a familiar name, but making sure the idea falls in line with what people expect from the name itself.

This was either poor use of Visceral, forcing them to work on Battlefield, or shit direction and higher ups deciding the idea should end up being just Battlefield. Whichever the case, this is disappointing.

@jeff This is maybe the most objective review I've seen of a game, pretty much ever. I love your work, but this and the quick look both came off super stilted, like you're deliberately not talking about the 500-lb Gorilla sitting next to you. I was hoping for something a bit more subjective coming from you. I know it's probably tough balancing that stuff.

There's no such thing as an objective video game review.
