Finally got round to playing through Killzone 2 and is it just me or is Rico one of the most irritating characters in gaming? All he ever seems to do is shout fuck for no reason, or run in head first screwing everything up. Was this on purpose?, is the only character in all 3 games meant to be deeply flawed or is it a case of incredibly poor writing?
Rico Velasquez
Character » appears in 5 games
Heavy Weapons Operative for the ISA forces. One of four playable characters in Killzone, and the Alpha Leader in Killzone 2.
Least likeable lead in a game?
Rico is an annoying piece of shit, and if I get to put a bullet in his head in KZ3, I will declare Guerrilla as the best developer of 2011.
Rico sucks pretty hard. It's obvious Guerilla thought they were making a total badass, what someone on their team thought was a real tough guy. But he comes across as overly crass and whiny. I say kill his ass in the first act of KZ3 and be done with it. Or just have your character run across his bosy at some point.
Hmm...Nero from Devil May Cry 4 really got on my nerves for some reason....could never think why xD
"De Scorpio, no? "
REAAAAAPERZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.
That's even worse.Or better.I can't figure it out.
"How can you hate that face!?
Fucking Kiddy Kong! "
And I hope the training mission in KZ3 is just stabbing and shooting Rico to death while he swings from a noose. He disobeyed his commanding officer and has committed horrible acts, douchery not even factoring in here. He's loud, annoying, dumb, useless, and even the damn character model is fucked up. Look at his eyes! Each one is on a different plane on his head!
Nero was a massive vagina. Miranda is a fu%#ing bitch. Many others exist who have pissed me off but can't recall right now.
I freaking hate nero and dante from the DMC series. I can't fucking believe that people actually like those posers! Don't get me wrong the games rock but the characters suck.
" I simply cannot stand Nathan Drake, Master Cheif (part of the reason why I love Reach so much), and Norman Jayden from Heavy Rain. "Hmmm, you really cannot stand Master Chief? He only says a few lines in each game, and the rest of the time he's just sort of bland, I can get not thinking he's a good character, but not being able to stand him? That's just strange.
...and Nathan Drake? What exactly is there to dislike? A world where Nathan Drake annoys me is a world I certainly do not want to live in :(
rico is supposed to be a loose canon but regardless, there are MUCH more likeable loose canons in videogame history.
Frank West. Frank always freaks out when a psychopath does something crazy. you would think after about a day or to there he would get used to it but nooooo... also drop the fucking camera Frank! there are more important things than snapping a picture up Jessica's skirt and then saying "FANTASTIC!"
Maybe the endless hokey cliché one-liners, flat sense of humour, and grating, ubiquitous Nolan North voice. I could write a whole god damn script for Drake in a new Uncharted game just by coming up with a dozen synonyms of the phrase "Oh boy, that's not good!" and some sarcastic readings of "Oh, another temple, great!", and yet people somehow fall for it and call it 'charming'....and Nathan Drake? What exactly is there to dislike? A world where Nathan Drake annoys me is a world I certainly do not want to live in :( "
OT: Nathan Drake, Commander Shepard, Carl Johnson, Zidane Tribal, and quite a lot of others I can't really be bothered to write down. Not trying to be too negative though, there are some fantastic leads out there.
Kratos angriness got annoying after the 1st game and he just became an angry dickhead, also cant stand master chief. Either make him speak more or keep him completely silent ala Gordon freeman from half life. Having him be so quiet all the time and so tame pisses me off for some reason
" I always thought Kane and Lynch were massive raging thundercunts. "Kane and Lync are IMO the most refreshing characters in recent gaming history.
The thing is, most of "action" characters are pretty much stereotype (handsome, bodybuilder-type, smart and witty).
I'd say the Black Ops dude was quite annoying.
Samus in Metroid: Other M. Man, I HATE the filth that lives in the suit that I control. To the point that I just want the suit--without the human.
I like to think Giant Bomb is for the most part pretty accepting of opinions (I can dream) so it sort of bugs me when people throw up these relatively pointless and inflammatory digs against things seemingly just because other people like them. That's not to say you aren't entitled to dislike a popular character, but it's the derogatory manner in which you expressed your opinion I find the most objectionable.
Rico was very annoying because of his lack of A.I. He was as useless as tits on a board. I don't mind that he was angry and had a thirst for violence though. It was Killzone after all, he's a soldier fighting a war on enemy turf. I'm too young to know for certain, but if Oliver Stone's films have taught me anything, the troops in Vietnam were just as angry and shouted fuck just as much, if not more than Rico!
There are just too many horribly written characters in video games for me to put my finger on just one.
" I always thought Kane and Lynch were massive raging thundercunts. "Why would you say that?
As for Nathan Drake, his dumb comments and damn bickering all the time really grind on me. I think it actually might just be Nolan North though - I did not really enjoy him in anything I've ever played from him. I don't like Desmond Miles, Vashyron, The Prince (loved his character but not the voice acting).
The only character that I liked him play as was Steven Heck from Alpha Protocol, but that was mostly because Obsidian made such a great character in Heck. But then again, all the voicing in that game was stellar...
Crap! I forgot to express my hate for Kratos as well after seeing it already posted.
I really hated Altair from Assassin's Creed. Look, I get it. You're really good at killing people. But do you have to be such a fucking dick about it?

I dont hate Rico , I understand why he so pissed off , Im of the few who played the first Killzone , so perhaps people dont understand him? I would like to know if you have played the first game , so you would know more about him , or maybe Im just a very forgiving person when it come to videogame characters , tho I hate Nathan Drake too , actually I hate the "Im so funny that I make jokes all the time" type of characters ie Joker , Carth , Nathan Drake , Alister son on so forth
Rico would fuck up Kratos, especially if they were on the same side.
One thing about Rico, I'm playing KZ2 again, and like last time it seemed to me, he gets worse as the game goes on. His men keep giving him shit. Between loss of respect and his world falling about(that one guy dying was a tragedy for him, ironic considering his attitude) he just seems to degenerate.
I get the impression he is a strong character in KZ3, see how that goes.
I think you're supposed to dislike Rico at the end of that game. At least that's the impression I got out of that game's story anyways. He's like those crazy dudes in Vietnam War flicks that go bat-shit crazy and starts murdering people out of paranoia and just sheer lunacy.
I'm guessing that Guerrilla plans to redeem (or at least attempt to) his character in KZ3, but like the rest of you I'm hoping he gets merc'd along the way.
@Aetheldod: I played through the first game before hand and yeah I didn't like him in that but nowhere near to the extent I did in 2.
I understand it's his, and quite a few other peoples' opinion, but whenever Brad says Enslaved has great characters I have to, 'REALLY?' at my screen. This bitch, this piece of crap is the most unlikable character in a game I've ever encountered. Kane & Lynch might be scum, but they're supposed to be. You're supposed to LIKE this girl. This girl who forces a man into slavery so she doesn't have to be a slave, the same woman who couldn't open the door for that man on a crashing ship, the same one who goes running off and nearly getting the man killed. (The boss fight infront of the turrets by Pigsy or whatever)
The fact that this game didn't end in Monkey ripping her head off and throwing it into a junk heap means the game did not have a 'good' end.
