An ASCII-based roguelike RPG, named after the Mines of Moria from The Lord of the Rings.
Sword of Fargoal is a "Rogue-like" role-playing game that charges players with the task of descending into a randomly generated dungeon, retrieving a sword, and escaping. Since the escape is limited to 2000 seconds and death is permanent, actually completing the game is notoriously difficult.
Created by computer gaming pioneer Richard Garriott, a.k.a. Lord British, Ultima was one of the first computer role playing games and it set many standards for the genre.
Also known as "Temple of Loth" (PC) and "Hobbit Adventure" (HP-41). A procedurally generated text adventure in which players navigate the castle of the Wizard Zot. Along with Rogue, it was a major inspiration for many procedurally generated RPGs in the 80s.
A turn-based role-playing game for Commodore PET computers, released as part of the cassette magazine CURSOR. It is notable for being a "pre-roguelike", as it has numerous roguelike elements while released prior to the game Rogue.
This dungeon crawler is one of the first ever RPGs with graphics and character progression.
Very early dungeon-crawler, pre-dating Rogue by two years.
Dark Woods 2 is an ASCII-based adventure game.
A roguelike PC game developed by Linley Henzell, released in 1997 and is still being improved upon as of 2009, through the open source Stone Soup project.
A top down RPG in the style of Ultima with CGA graphics. Essentially a remake of John Mather's Ranadinn from the year prior, introducing fog of war/line of sight mechanics and a completely different combat and stat system.
