that the protaganist dies in the end? i just beat persona 4 and loved it, and was looking around on youtube and some asshole mentioned that the protaganist in P3 dies.

i was gonna get this game but knowing this should i really play it? although the gameplay in P4 was pretty fun and challenging, i mainly liked it for the story

    Dude, yes.
The protagonist's death has nothing to do with the story or gameplay itself. You know you'll be getting a bit of a downer at the end, but it doesn't ruin anything. :P

Yes and yes. I didn't even realize that's what happened the first time I beat it, so knowing beforehand shouldn't affect your appreciation for the story.

@Eirikr: Yeah, it's easy to misunderstand if you don't know ahead of time.

It's just one relatively minor point in the story. There's so much more to the plot than that. Knowing that he dies may actually help you understand more about what transpired, but it's largely irrelevant until you actually reach that point.

If you don't proceed and play the second chapter of FES "The Answer" then what Gahzoo says is true.  The end of "The Journey" never says factually that he dies only that he closes his eyes and drifts off.  There is the suggestion that he dies, but it isn't until "The Answer" that it is made concrete that the character has given his life for everyone.  I much prefer it being left open to conversation.

Again, another reason why I dislike "The Answer", but still love "The Journey".
