Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 is a role-playing game developed and published by Atlus for the PlayStation 2. It is chronologically the fifth installment in the Shin Megami Tensei: Persona series. Why is this game on PS2?

I've always been confused about this game. Why is it on the Playstation 2 and not the Playstation 3?

Because one of the character models on the PS3 would cost just as much as making the whole game on the PS2.

And as Megalon mentioned there are way more PS2 around then PS3s.

If you're going by that logic, then why isn't it on the Wii? Unless it's made by SONY. Which again would seem weird because you would think SONY would make a game for their PS3.

A lot of assets already existed from other SMT games, they could use the same engine, etc. Doing a lot with a low budget is Atlus's successful business model.

Cheaper to make a game for the PS2. More people have PS2 than PS3. So larger profit.

Because they didn't want to add unnecessary motion control to it? And before you say "well, doesn't need to have motion control to be on the Wii", if it's on the Wii chances are people will expect motion control, regardless.
Hell, it could be that they started the project prior to the Wii's release and never even thought of changing all the assets to work on Nintendo's console.

@Mr_Bubbles: If you look at Atlus' track record they've got a very good relationship with Sony. If Atlus is publishing something, it's usually on a Sony Platform.
Plus, even the Wii is more expensive to produce [a quality product] for than the PS2. Persona 4 runs on the same engine and mechanics as Persona 3 so there's no need to port anything.

I figure that the PS2 has a huge share of RPG lovers must have had something to do with this. Everyone who knew about the Shin Megani games before P4 I'm sure has a PS2.

Easy development combined with an established and predictable userbase that's known to buy third party games.

Great point. The Wii's best sellers tend to be first party, where as Sony's console is almost exclusively third party.

Its a PS2 game is why. They wanted people to, you know, play it. And they're not fool enough to try and pass a PS2 game off as a PS3 game. Basically, they did it cus they're smart and companies like NIS are dumb as hell and out of touch.

Spot on assessment in my opinion, PS2 dominated the RPG market of the consoles at the time.

Eh?  The prequel was on PS2, so the engine and reusable art assets are already ready already and the audience is largely Japanese.  Put 2 and 2 together and you get Wii?

This.  Persona 4 was built on an improved Persona 3 engine, so it was cost-effective to put the game out on a console with a proven userbase.

It is awesome that this game came out in my region in 2009 and was a successful PS2 title. Honestly i wouldn't have it any other way.

    It's a Japan thing.

I wouldn't be surprised it makes it to the PSP just like  P3.

A PS3 title would have been criticized if it looked like P4. And the budget they had probably made more sense on the PS2 anyways.

Not a knock on the system or graphics mind you, it just suited the PS2 perfectly well.
