Giant Bombcast 02-22-2011

Vinny punishes himself with 10 more inexplicable hours of Demon's Souls, Jeff tries to buy the publishing rights to RBI Baseball, Brad celebrates American royalty on Presidents Day, Ryan denounces saxophones, and everyone yells on this week's Bombcast!

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

My first play-through in Demon's Souls was with an unarmored (for the first level or two) barbarian. After struggling through the first few levels, I discovered upon searching for class information on the internet that I was playing the class considered by some to be the most difficult.  But once I picked up some armor and a shield, the rest of the game really wasn't that bad at all.

I don't really feel like the game is half as punishing as people make it out to be.  Unless you make the mistake like me by starting out naked and with just a club, the game isn't really that difficult if you play smart and cautious (or if you role Royalty and smoke everything with magic).

Maybe it's because I still remember days of playing early MMORPGs where you could lose hours or days of progress from dying (one time I actually lost almost all of my armor in Asheron's Call in a series of failed corpse runs, which was probably more like a week's worth of progress), but losing maybe twenty minutes worth of souls in Demon's Souls really seems like nothing to me.

As far as the Demon's Souls discussion goes, I never played it, but a game not telling you what the best thing to buy is or telling you what to spend skill points on is not that ridiculous, and that's the way it should be. The game still sounds messed up in some ways, but that ain't one of them.

Protip for you, Vinny:

You're digging too deep. Most of the stuff you're reading is unnecessary for your first playthrough, Just hang back and enjoy the game as you go along, and maybe dump a few points into Vitality. If you really want to go the faq-way, it would maybe be more useful to just look up specific tactics against the boss or section you're having trouble with.

Sorry Ryan, but Vinny's totally right. Go back to the 70's and 60's and there is some great Sax music. Stan Getz is an absolute jazz legend and he helped popularize Bossa Nova. Ain't nothin' wrong with that.

And reading this one. Way to go guys.

EDIT: gotta disagree with Jeff on Catherine, though. I don't think it'll be coming anytime soon, but next year seems too much. Persona 4 probably has even more text/VA work then Catherine and that game came out  in the US 5 months after it did in Japan.

Regarding the Demon's Souls discussion, why are these RPGs still having crappy animations and stupid hit detections, with points coming out of attacks, waiting for the enemy to launch his attack and such, and when you finally kill him, he just disappears?
And for fuck sake, why it's gotta be the same medieval fantasy/Tolkien shit , with dragons, orcs and fuckin' elves and always big insects? Speaking of which, I always hated my character fighting giant/out of proportion insects in any game- that childish shit always broke the immersion and reminded me I'm playing a game

Also, regarding the special/limited edition stuff, I would rather prefer them to offer physical objects like statuettes, artbooks and such than exclusive in-game content , no matter how useless they seem. Offering exclusive in-game content, no matter if it's just appearance crap, it's unfair and gross, especially the pre-order exclusives. Now it's like having to choose between having the regular game with 70-80% of the content or having to preorder the special edition from a certain specific retailer and hoping to get 100% content. This stupid shit is like having to choose between buying an apple or an apple cut in half, without skin -it's fucking gross and humiliating.
Developers and companies already pushed the envelope too far with the whole DLC crap, having the nerve to announce DLC even before the game is released. This whole greedy capitalistic shit needs to end and some rules and regulations should be set for all the parties, because these companies are behaving like drug dealers, treating us like drug addicts. And really now: would the world fucking end if these guys can't have their Ferraris or Lamborghinis today, but instead next week?  Is it that big of a deal to lose a few pennies, when you're still winning millions of dollars?
It's  a shame that the ESRB, consumer protection agencies and other organizations like that still haven't evolved to much important matters than blood /violence, gore and sexuality in videogames. For fuck sake, regulate this market first and THEN measure the amount of violence or sexual/non-sexual nudity a game has, because I think it's more important to prevent consumers from being REALLY cheated for their REAL money by REAL companies and REAL retailers, than protecting their "virgin","pure", "innocent" minds and intellects against the POSSIBLE dangers of ARTIFICIAL  violence, gore, political and/or sexual content.

I want to see a regulating institution/organism protecting my rights as a consumer and that can actually penalize companies for putting out games and not delivering a feature/ or delivering a faulty feature that was highly advertised before release or offering exclusive content  for specific retailers or special edition content that cannot be  available otherwise post-release. Why such a thing still doesn't exist, when stuff like DLC or online support was so easy to implement?

It's sad that you guys find helpful or nice comments trying to give tips to Vinny as "nerd rage" or something. :(

Healthy debate is a good thing, don't flip out about it! This is like the time that people on NeoGAF said "Well Vinny cheating through Fallout is weird, but I understand that" and you and Brad told them to go fuck themselves as though they insulted Vinny.

If you want to play demon's souls learn to use the wiki. I went through the first world without it then I just started hitting a wall. Then I learned to read the wiki. It's pretty much the user manual for the game.

I'm glad Vinny is continuing to give Demon's Souls a shot. It's difficulty is greatly overstated; once you can remember every monster's placement in a level(in my first run, this happened when I started going to old levels and farming stones to improve my weapons), soon you'll find that dodging is more important than blocking, so you'll ditch the armor, then you'll lose the shield because you'll find all the monsters to be predictable, and you'll be able to go through levels faster and faster. Also, first run through the game, magic and/or bows are your best friend. It allows you to kill most standard enemies in two shots, and cheese the bosses to oblivion.

I only started using the wiki to find where all the stones were, but it is there if you need help with a particular boss (for me, that was Flamelurker and Maneater).

The only real problem I had with Demon's Souls was the menu design, but everything else was calculated perfection. Once you get deep into the game, you'll start to realize this.

I wish the guys would quit using the phrrase "they figured out" for trendy game design. Just because a design style isn't what's trendy right now doesn't mean it's less valid than other styles. Nobody "figures out" game design any more than a designer "figures out" fashion or "landscape design"

Ha, I disagree with all of this. Except for the part where the difficulty is overstated.

Just goes to show that DS allows for a lot of different play-styles.

For Demon's Soul you shouldn't even try to understand it for your first playthrough, just play the game and finish it because like many game the fun part is not getting everything, when you do it loose a lot of it's fun. Just do a playthrough and on the next playthrough if you want to do them you could always understand more.

Just one thing to say about their Views on Demons souls

I played the entire game with a melee only character, without doing any sort of stupid tendency trickery(killing yourself etc), without looking not even once at a guide and without summoning blue phantoms for help, Upgraded 4 weapons to the maximum level (without knowing the Christal gecko thing) and had a effin great time, I really dont understand why they hate it so much.

edit: I love how Jeff always manages to slip one or two nintendo download titles on the bombcast.

I went home and listened to all of Diamonds and Pearls last night. Perfect album for my money. The last song, Life 4 Love, is an especially badass way to close out an album. Every time I hear it, it sounds like it should be accompanied by rapidfire Macross space battle footage.

It doesn't sound like they hate hate it as much as they don't gel with the crazy gameplay notions it's serving up, and they're astonished that a company would have the minerals to publish such things. Vinny especially doesn't sound like he hates it; there seems to be an element of something that's gripping him. Well, there must be, otherwise who'd play a game for that long that they hated? Only crazy people, right?

Yeah Prince is absolutely amazing live, I saw him a few years ago during his 21 night residency in London and I would see him again in a heartbeat, really hope he makes it back to the UK. The guy is 52, hasn't released a truly great album in over 20 years but on stage he brings it every time. Really under-rated as a guitarist as well.

John Van Caneghem worked on all the Might and Magic games (including Heroes, which is a spinoff) up to the point where New World Computing went out of business and Ubisoft bought the license. Just a pointer.

Also, all this discussion about Demon's Souls in the comments makes me less inclined to play DS, as someone who would consider himself vaguely interested in it.

Thanks dude! Glad to see someone else shares my views.

Hopefully we will see these issues at least mentioned in some of these internet videogame-related podcasts, because kissing Tim Schafer or Peter Molyneux asses or having childish stupid topics like " who makes better burgers", for example, no matter how humorous or interesting those may be , those are still a waste of podcast time, especially when this industry has so many problems that need to be discussed and addressed.
All these podcast guys act like all is good and perfect, so let's fill the podcast space with meaningless stupid topics and way too many personal issues like anyone is supposed to give a shit about what you did in the past weekend or how do you sleep at night. And the irony is that the same people bitch about the industry "not evolving" and "not maturing" enough. Really? How can it evolve or mature when you're spending a vast chunk of podcast time talking about your sleeping or eating habits, making fart jokes and having a never-ending stream of "puns".
My guess is that happens because they're too childish, too self-obsessed, too superficial and too fucking gutless to tackle such important topics, yet they still claim to be "journalists". Or they simply don't matter or aren't big enough in the grand scheme of things, of which I doubt, given the nature of the business. But hey,  time will tell if I'm right or wrong ( I really hope I'm wrong! ) and things will change for the better.

Hey, I do, so your point is already invalid.  Want to talk about a bad podcast? 2 hours every week of pissing and moaning like that would get boring real fast.  Your previous points are strong, but I don't know where this  podcast blasting came from.

It isn't as if the "important" stuff doesn't get it's share of time, and it isn't as if "podcast time" is some finite resource that's going to dry up.

@Vigil80:
Dude, don't you have a life of your own? Why do you care how a guy wipes his ass and sleeps at night?
And first and foremost this is a VIDEOGAME podcast, not some random shit, therefore you'd expect it to be about videogames and not about personal things that have nothing to do with the subject.
And who says it's gotta be about bitching and moaning ? Can't these issues be addressed with professionalism and maturity and still be interesting? Why does all the videogame related stuff has to be always treated in immature, childish ways?
Do you need fart jokes and stupid puns every 5 minutes to keep you entertained like an ADHD suffering kid? Fine.
But you'll have to admit that there are serious fucking issues related to videogames that need to be at least discussed, if not corrected. Why do you think there's no podcast out there that lets customers/gamers speak their mind about what bothers them or /what they like about the videogames and publishing companies, and these podcast guys never put people in contact with these PR  company guys and developers?

Instead of that , you get the same old ass-kissing crap like "Oh my God, it's Tim Schafer, ladies and gentlemen- Awesome! Let's all gather around and suck his dick 24/7, 100 years from now for makin'  Psychonauts , Grim Fandango and that weird childish punk -metal RTS shit that's been labeled as a fun game, but it failed miserably! Oohooo!" or  "people, EA's own Paul Barnett is in the house, ready to pump his rehashed Burnout Paradise game with real branded cars (without "Vote for Obama" in-game apolitical advertisements this time) -ooohooo" or "We have Peter Molyneux! -Great! let's make him a 10.000 feet statue for making Black & White and  Fable series where you get to have kids and fart in the game (that's a real game seller all right!), plus pumping that awful Kinect shit and having a blast stroking artificial kittens and other awful weird obsessive-compulsive disorder behavior - ooohoo" and all that fanboy fist-pumping , corporation ass kissing and never-ending developer praising shit all the gaming podcast provide, when they have such "special" guests. Aren't you tired of all that same shit happening over and over again?

There are serious issues with discriminatory decisions with preorder exclusives, DLC and online support that still plague this business, or being able to buy a PS3 in your country, but you don't have customer support in case it malfunctions, or the fact that PS Store is not available in your country, even though Sony merchandises PS3s there and more blatant problems like that. Why these things are never discussed, like they're some kind of taboo topics?

Sure, I don't expect them to serious 100% of the time, 'cause we're all human beings, but that doesn't mean that you should waste a good fucking podcast hour talking about what you ate and how you slept last night, because we're not all brain-dead fucking hobos with no fuckin' work, life and personality or obnoxious kids with nothing else to do, for fuck sake , and some of us hate being treated as such! Now is that shit so difficult for you to comprehend?
If the answer is "yes", then please, don't bother replying to me and go mind your own business,  all right?
